Por muita vontade que tenha de ser produtiva, chega uma altura do dia em que já não consigo fazer mais nada. Então sento-me na sala com a minha mãe, fazemos tricot e vemos episódios da Miss Marple. Finalmente acabei de coser esta camisola e agora estou a aprender a fazer torcidos.

As much as I wish to be productive, there comes a time in the day when I can no longer work. So I sit with my mother in the living room and we knit and watch Miss Marple. I've finally finished this jumper and know I'm learning how to knit cables.

Como Fazer uma Toalha com Capuz :: Hooded Towel Tutorial

Na semana passada mostrei-vos como faço fita de viés — hoje vamos ver como aplicá-la. Fiz uma toalha de banho para o bebé (aquele modelo clássico com capuz) e fotografámos o passo-a-passo. Vamos a isso?

Last week I showed you how I make bias tape — today we'll see how to apply it. I made a baby towel (that classic hooded pattern) and we photographed the process step-by-step. Are you ready?

1. Material necessário:

- um quadrado de turco branco com 100 x 100 cm

- um quadrado de turco branco com 50 x 50 cm

- 5 metros de fita de viés larga

- linha de coser branca

- alfinetes

- tesoura

- cortador rotativo (opcional)

- régua em acrílico (opcional)

- tapete de corte (opcional)

- um prato de sobremesa

- máquina de costura

- walking foot (opcional)

1. Supplies:

- one 100 x 100 cm (1 x 1 yard) square of white cotton towelling

- one 50 x 50 cm (½ x ½ yard) square of white cotton towelling

- 5 metres (5 yards) of wide bias tape

- all-purpose thread in white

- pins

- fabric scissors

- rotary cutter (optional)

- acrylic ruler (optional)

- cutting mat (optional)

- one dessert plate

- sewing machine

- walking foot (optional)

2. Corte o quadrado de turco mais pequeno no sentido da diagonal. Ficará com dois triângulos, mas só precisará de um para fazer o capuz.

2. Cut the smaller square of towelling in half diagonally. You'll now have two triangles but you'll only need one to make the hood.

3. Corte uma tira de fita de viés com comprimento suficiente para debruar o lado maior do triângulo. Abra-a completamente, alinhe um dos lados da fita com a extremidade do triângulo e prenda com alfinetes.

3. Cut a length of bias tape to fit the bottom edge of the hood. Unfold the tape and pin it to the edge of the hood.

4. Cosa em cima do primeiro vinco.

4. Stitch on top of the first crease.

5. De forma a estabilizar os pontos e reduzir quaisquer problemas de tensão, engome a costura tal como foi cosida (ainda do avesso).

5. In order to set the stitches and ease any tension problems, press the seam as sewn (still on the wrong side of the bias tape).

6. Dobre a fita e engome.

6. Fold the tape and press.

7. Vire o capuz, dobre a fita e engome. Se desejar, prenda com alfinetes.

7. Flip the hood over and fold the bias tape, pressing it in place. Pin in place if you wish.

8. Cosa o mais próximo possível da extremidade da fita. Eu gosto de usar um ponto zig-zag largo, mas claro que se pode coser a direito (ou, se preferir, cosa à mão com pontos invisíveis).

8. Sew as close to the edge of the bias tape as you can. I like to use a wide zig-zag stitch but you can stitch a straight line if you prefer (or even blind stitch it by hand).

9. Alinhe a ponta do capuz com um dos cantos do quadrado de turco maior e prenda com alfinetes.

9. Pin the hood on a corner of the larger towelling square.

10. Para arredondar o canto, trace à volta de um prato de sobremesa e corte o excesso.

10. To round off the corner, trace around a dessert plate and cut along that line.

11. Com um ponto largo, cosa o capuz à toalha e engome.

11. Machine baste the hood in place and press.

11. Agora só falta debruar a toalha: abra a fita de viés e prenda-a com alfinetes ao avesso da toalha.

11. Now you just need to bind your towel: open the bias tape and pin it to the wrong side of your towel.

12. Antes de começar a coser, deixe uma cauda de fita com cerca de 10 cm. Cosa em cima do primeiro vinco a toda a volta da toalha, mas atenção...

12. Before you start stitching, make sure you leave a tail of approx. 10 cm / 4'' unsewn. Stitch on top of the first crease all around your towel but make sure you...

13. ... pare de coser a cerca de 10 cm do final.

13. ... stop sewing approx. 10 cm (4'') from the end.

14. Dobre as extremidades da fita e vinque. Afaste do turco as partes da fita ainda por coser e prenda os vincos (direito com direito) com alfinetes.

14. Bring the start and the end of the tape together and fold them where they meet. Finger press, take the unsewn bits of tape away from the towelling and and pin the creases right sides together.

15. Cosa em cima dos vincos de forma a juntar as duas extremidades. Corte o excesso de tecido e abra a costura com o ferro. Acabe de coser a fita de viés à toalha.

15. Stitch a straight line along the creases to join both ends. Trim the excess fabric and press the seam open. Finish sewing the bias tape to the towel.

16. Dê pequenos golpes nas curvas.

16. Clip the curves.

17. Engome conforme descrito nos passos 5, 6 e 7.

17. Press as described in steps 5, 6 and 7.

18. No direito da toalha, cosa a fita de viés a toda a volta com um ponto zig-zag largo (ou a direito, ou à mão). Engome.

18. On the right side of the towel, stitch the bias tape in place using a wide zig-zag stitch (or use a straight stitch, or blind stitch by hand). Press.

Já está!

Lã :: Yarn

Apesar de não tricotar (acho que um ou dois projectos por ano não contam), adoro lãs. Em Inglaterra é muito fácil encontrar fios de excelente qualidade (não só em pura lã como também em alpaca, caxemira, seda, algodão e outras fibras naturais) e a enorme diversidade de cores e texturas disponíveis nas lojas fazem disparar a imaginação até de uma não-tricotadeira como eu.

A minha mãe veio cá passar uns tempos e no sábado fomos às compras. Estes novelos vão ser transformados em camisolas e casacos de bebé para o próximo Outono... mal posso esperar!

Although I don't knit (I don't think my one or two projects a year are enough to qualify me as a knitter), I love yarn. In England it's very easy to find excellent quality yarn (not only pure wool but also alpaca, cashmere, silk, cotton and other natural fibers) and the huge array of colours and textures that are available in the shops make even a non-knitter such as myself dream about all their possibilities.

My mother has come to stay and on Saturday we went shopping. These skeins are destined to become the baby's cardigans and jumpers for next autumn... I can't wait!

Livro de Pano :: Quiet Book

Fiz um livro de pano para a minha sobrinha de 9 meses. Como ela ainda é muito pequena, decidi-me por um conceito bastante simples: 12 páginas almofadadas feitas com tecidos figurativos, coloridos e que despertam a imaginação. Espero que ela goste!

I sewed a quiet book for my 9-month-old nice. Since she's so young, I went for a very simple concept: 12 padded pages made from colourful, playful, novelty fabrics. I hope she likes it!

Flores de Janeiro :: January Flowers

Janeiro não é o mês mais luminoso nem tão pouco o mais florido, mas mesmo assim é possível trazer elementos naturais para dentro de casa. Há um ano coloquei ramos despidos em água (que acabaram por despontar com o calor da lareira) — este ano tenho jacintos forçados, bagas de roseira e, para grande surpresa minha, rosas do canteiro à frente de casa (estão picadas pela geada mas até gosto delas assim). A lareira é nova, mas isso fica para um post especial sobre a nossa sala.

January isn't strong in light nor garden flowers, but even so it's possible to bring some natural elements indoors. Last year I cut and placed some bare branches in water (which ended up blooming due to the heat of the fire) — this year I've got forced hyacinths, rosehips and, to my great surprise, even some roses from the bed in front of our house (they show some frost damage but I kind of like them that way). The mantelpiece is new but I'm saving that for a special post about our sitting room.

Como Fazer Fita de Viés :: Bias Tape Tutorial

Hoje vou mostrar-vos a maneira como eu faço fitas de viés. Há outras técnicas, claro, mas esta forma de fazer é simples e resulta sempre. Vamos a isto?

Today I'm going to show you how I make bias tape. There are other techniques, of course, but this one is simple and effective. Are you ready?

1. Comece por reunir todos os materiais necessários: tecido, fazedor de viés, tesoura, cortador rotativo, fita métrica, régua em acrílico, tapete de corte, ferro de engomar, máquina de costura.

1. Start by gathering all the necessary supplies: fabric, bias tape maker, scissors, rotary cutter, tape measure, acrylic ruler, self-healing cutting mat, iron, sewing machine.

2. Existem vários tamanhos de fazedores de viés; este que usei faz viés com 2,5 cm de largura. Para saber a largura das tiras de tecido que irá cortar, há que medir o interior do mesmo: este tem 10 cm.

2. Bias tape makers come in different sizes; this one I'm using makes bias tape that's 2,5 cm / 1'' wide. In order to know the width of the fabric strips you're about to cut, first you must measure the inside of the bias tape maker: this one is 10 cm / 4'' wide.

3. Dobre o tecido a 45º e corte ao longo da dobra com uma tesoura. O seu tecido terá agora a forma de um triângulo.

3. Fold your fabric at a 45º angle and cut along the fold with a pair of scissors. Your fabric will now have a triangular shape.

4. Dobre o triângulo ao meio, alinhando o corte em viés que acabou de fazer. Use a régua e o cortador rotativo para acertar esse mesmo corte.

4. Fold the triangle in half along the bias edge you've just cut. Using the ruler and the rotary cutter, trim that edge.

5. Agora corte tiras com 10 cm de largura até ao fim do tecido.

5. Now cut 10 cm / 4'' wide strips until you run out of fabric.

6. Pegue em duas tiras com extremidades em ângulos opostos.

6. Take two strips that have edges in opposite angles.

7. Deite uma tira sobre a outra, direito contra direito (este tecido que usei é igual dos dois lados, por isso é impossível ver a diferença entre direito e avesso), de maneira a formarem um ângulo recto, e descompensando um pouco as pontas (cerca de 0,5 cm, medida que corresponde à margem de costura).

7. Lay one strip on top of the other, right sides together (this particular fabric I'm using looks the same on both sides so you can't really tell which is side is which), at a 90º angle, and make sure you overlap the edges by approx. 0,5 cm / ¼'' (this is your seam allowance).

8. Cosa à máquina usando uma margem de costura de 0,5 cm. Abra a costura com o ferro e corte o excesso de tecido. Repita até ter obtido uma tira contínua.

8. Machine-sew the seam using a 0,5 cm / ¼'' seam allowance. Press the seam allowance open and clip off the excess fabric. Repeat to join the remaining strips.

9. Com o avesso virado para cima, enfie uma extremidade da tira de tecido através do fazedor de viés.

9. With the wrong side of the fabric facing up, feed the edge of the strip into the bias tape maker.

10. Vá puxando lentamente o fazedor de viés e engome as dobras que se vão formando.

10. Slowly pull the maker and press the folds as they come out of it.

11. Dobre a tira a meio a todo o comprimento e engome.

11. Fold the bias tape in half and press.

Life is Messy Bootcamp

Trabalhar por conta própria tem inúmeras vantagens mas, como em todas as situações, é impossível escapar aos aspectos negativos. Being self-employed presents numerous advantages but, like any other situation in life, comes with its own negative aspects. Sacos de Alfazema :: Lavender Bags

Saudosismos à parte, há certas coisas que nunca deveriam passar de moda. Gavetas a cheirar a alfazema, por exemplo, são algo tão delicioso, tão intemporal e tão simples de alcançar. Todos nós, mesmo aqueles que nunca pregaram um botão na vida, temos restos de tecidos em casa: roupa que passou de moda ou que já não serve, écharpes de seda com vestígios de traças, lenços de assoar bordados que já ninguém usa, fronhas que já não cabem nas almofadas de hoje em dia, lençóis das avós que são demasiado curtos para as camas contemporâneas. Vamos transformá-los em algo útil e agradável, então!

(estes sacos são aproveitamentos dos restos destes lençóis e vão perfumar as gavetas da cómoda do bebé — os tricots, esses foram feitos pela minha sogra)

Certain things should never get out of fashion. Lavender scented drawers, for instance, are so timeless, so lovely and so simple to achieve. Everyone, even those amongst us who have never sewn a button in their lives, have bits of fabric lying around in their homes: clothes that are outdated or that no longer fit, silk scarves with moth damage, embroidered handkerchiefs that no-one uses anymore, old pillow cases and sheets that are too small for today's pillows and beds. Why not turn them into something useful and nice, then?

Presentes da Cozinha :: Gifts from the Kitchen

Hoje fomos conhecer um bebé novo, minúsculo e absolutamente amoroso. Como já tinha oferecido aos pais um dos meus babetes, hoje à tarde levei-lhes apenas um frasco de doce de laranja amarga e uma lata de bolachas de chocolate (a receita vem neste livro extraordinário). Foi uma tarde mesmo bem passada!

Today we met a new, sweet little baby. As I had already given her parents one of my bibs, this afternoon I simply took them a jar of homemade marmalade and a tin of chocolate biscuits (I used a recipe from this fabulous book). What a lovely time we had!

Alcofa :: Moses Basket

Finalmente forrei a alcofa! Utilizei um dos lençóis antigos que vieram de casa dos meus avós paternos e no meio incluí uma camada daquele enchimento de algodão que utilizo para os quilts. Também fiz um lençol de baixo com elástico e, como quero fazer mais dois, estou a pensar fotografar o processo para o partilhar aqui convosco (é mesmo muito fácil e tão mais prático do um lençol normal).

Aproveitei para fazer a cama com um lençol de cima que foi da minha mãe quando era bebé e com uma manta em tricot (esta mais recente e feita a quatro mãos pela minha avó e pela minha mãe) — o modelo vem neste livro e a lã é esta.

I've finally lined the moses basket! To make the cover I used one of those old sheets that came from my paternal grandparents' house and a layer of cotton wadding. I've also sewed a fitted sheet and, since I want to make two more, I'm thinking of photographing the process so I can share it with you (it's so simple and much more practical than a regular sheet).

I made the bed with a lovely sheet that belonged to my mother when she was a baby and a hand-knitted blanket (recently made by both my grandmother and my mother) — the pattern came from this book and the yarn is this one.

Quilt Kits in Progress

Têm-me perguntado se haverá mais quilt kits disponíveis no futuro — a resposta é sim! Mas de momento tenho alguma dificuldade em estar em pé muitas horas (e acreditem que engomar e cortar tecidos leva mesmo muito tempo), por isso os kits só estarão na loja daqui a umas semanas...

You've been asking me whether I'll have any more quilt kits available in the near future — the answer is yes! But presently I'm unable to stand on my feet for long stretches of time (and believe me when I say that ironing and cutting fabric takes a very long time), which means that the shop will only be updated in a few weeks time...

Cueiros :: Baby Dresses

Cueiros dividem as opiniões das mães e parece-me que já só se usam em Portugal e Espanha (onde creio que dão pelo nome de faldones). Há quem diga que nada é mais prático para mudar fraldas, há quem os vista apenas a raparigas, há ainda quem os ache detestáveis. O próprio termo é ambíguo — o velho dicionário Moraes (que o meu pai herdou e de que eu tanto gosto) define cueiro como "faixa de baeta ou flanela, pano em que se envolve o corpo das crianças da cintura para baixo e especialmente as nádegas"— bastante distante desta espécie de vestido unissexo, portanto.

Tanto o meu irmão como eu usámos cueiros nos primeiros meses de vida e eu agora quero experimentá-los para poder formar a minha própria opinião. Emprestaram-me bastantes e este em especial foi comprado pela minha mãe ainda antes de sabermos se eu iria ter um rapaz ou uma rapariga. Vinha com uma fita de cetim branca à frente, mas achei-lhe pouca graça e decidi substituí-la por uma fita de viés feita por mim.

These unisex baby dresses are a hot topic amongst Portuguese mothers. Let me begin by saying that I believe they only still remain in use in the Iberian Peninsula (I believe they're called faldones in Spain). Some mothers swear by them (since they are so practical for changing nappies), others will only dress girls in them, whilst others absolutely loathe them.

Both my brother and I wore this kind of dresses during our first months and I'm keen to give them a try so I can form my own opinion on the matter. I've been lent quite a few and this one in particular was bought by my mother even before we knew whether I was carrying a boy or a girl. It came with a white satin ribbon which I didn't love, so I decided to replace it with some homemade bias tape.

Numa das frequentes encomendas que a minha mãe me envia vinham três fraldas de pano, encontradas no fundo de uma gaveta em casa da minha avó. As bainhas estavam algo desfiadas — mas como sou a favor de aproveitar tudo o que já existe, lembrei-me de lhes arredondar os cantos e aplicar umas fitas de viés feitas por mim. Vão ser óptimas para proteger o meu ombro depois de dar de mamar...

In one of the frequent parcels my mother sends me came three old muslin squares, found in the back of a drawer at my granny's house. The hems were in poor condition — but since I'm all for making the most of what already exists, I thought I'd simply round the corners and bind the edges with homemade bias tape. They'll come in handy for protecting my shoulder after breastfeeding...

Paredes :: Walls

O que vê quando olha para as suas paredes? Recordações de viagens, instantâneos de momentos passados, as suas poupanças? Quadros herdados ou escolhidos por outras pessoas, desenhos feitos por amigos ou mesmo pelos seus filhos? Ou um enorme vazio?

As paredes de nossa casa devem reflectir quem somos, e aquilo que lá penduramos deve ter valor aos nossos olhos. As paredes mais interessantes são as que suscitam perguntas e emoções.

What do you see when you look at your walls? Travel souvenirs, glimpses of moments past, your savings? Pictures that have been inherited or chosen by others, your friends' or children's drawings? Or a huge void?

The walls in our homes should reflect who we are and what we hang on them should be valuable to us. The most interesting walls are those that raise questions and evoke emotions.

Sofá Novo :: New Sofa

Após meses de indecisão, decidimos comprar mais um sofá para a nossa sala. Por razões de espaço e de orçamento, decidimo-nos pelo modelo Ektorp de dois lugares do Ikea, mas com uma capa Bemz (conhecem esta empresa especializada em capas para mobília do Ikea?). No preciso dia em que íamos comprar o dito sofá, entrámos na minha loja de caridade preferida (um depósito de móveis do YMCA) e não é que estava lá um sofá igual ao que queríamos, mas a 1/5 do preço? Claro que era antigo e a capa estava nojenta, mas a estrutura estava em bom estado e, de qualquer maneira, já íamos encomendar uma capa diferente! Ficámos contentíssimos com esta descoberta e a nossa sala está muito mais funcional e confortável.

After months of indecision, we finally decided to buy another sofa for our sitting room. Bearing in mind the space available as well as our budget, we decided we'd go for an Ikea two-seat Ektorp sofa but we'd order a Bemz slipcover (do you know this company that makes covers for Ikea furniture?). Well, in the exact same day that we were going to drive to Ikea, we went into my favourite charity shop (a YMCA furniture outlet) and can you believe that there was a sofa there for sale just like the one we wanted but at 1/5 of the price? Of course it was old and its slipcover was dirty but the structure was sound and we were going to order a special slipcover anyway! We were thrilled and now our living room is much more functional and comfortable.

É importante fazer resoluções e planos para o ano novo, mas também é bom celebrar tudo aquilo que atingimos no ano que está a acabar. Já devem ter percebido que faço os possíveis por assinalar as estações do ano, tirar partido dos pequenos prazeres do dia-a-dia e focar-me nas coisas positivas da minha vida, e este exercício anual faz-me sempre sentir cheia de sorte e alegria.

It's important to make plans and resolutions for the new year but let's not forget to celebrate everything that we've achieved in the year that is now ending. You may have already realised that I strive to mark the seasons, make the most of everyday pleasures and focus on the positive things in my life so this yearly exercise never fails to make me feel lucky and joyful.

Em Janeiro apareceram snowdrops no jardim e laranjas amargas de Sevilha nas frutarias. Comprei antigos kilts e casacos em fazendas escocesas e transformei-os em sacos de Inverno.

In January snowdrops started showing up in the garden and Seville oranges at the greengrocers'. I bought old tartan kilts and tweed jackets and turned them into wintery bags.

Em Fevereiro fiz anos, fomos passar uns dias à Cornualha (onde apanhei as primeiras flores de Primavera), fiz uma galinha-abafador para os scones e alguns babetes em oleado.

In February I turned a year older, we spent some days in Cornwall (where I picked the first spring flowers), I made a scone cosy and some oilcloth bibs.

Em Março a Primavera chegou! Fiz muitos babetes em tecido para a loja e um quilt de bebé para a nossa sobrinha que estava para nascer.

In March spring sprang! I sewed a lot of fabric bibs for the shop and made a baby quilt for our little niece who was about to be born.

Abril foi o mês da Páscoa, de sacos floridos e da ida a Londres para o lançamento do livro Decorate.

April was the month of Easter, flowery bags and a trip to London for the launch of the book Decorate.

Em Maio o Tiago fez anos, fiz novas clutches e lancei uma colecção de écharpes.

In May it was Tiago's birthday, I made new clutches and launched a small collection of scarves.

Em Junho celebrámos o Santo António dentro de casa (estava a chover), fiz a minha primeira t-shirt, passei horas na cozinha a fazer compotas e descobri que ia ter um bebé!

In June we celebrated Sain Anthony's day indoors (it was raining), I sewed my very first t-shirt, spent hours in the kitchen making jam and discovered I was going to have a baby!

Julho foi o mês das papoilas, das costuras de Verão e das férias na praia em Portugal.

July was the month for poppies, summer sewing and holidays at the beach in Portugal.

Em Agosto deixei de ignorar a nossa sala e fiz poufs e almofadas para a tornar mais confortável; também nos lembrámos de transformar uma palette em mesa de café. O jardim encheu-se de flores, frutos, insectos e pássaros.

In August I stopped ignoring our sitting room and made some beanbags and cushions to make it more comfortable; we also transformed a pallet into a coffee table. The garden was full of flowers, fruits, insects and birds.

Em Setembro chegou o Outono, a minha estação preferida neste país. O campo estava cheio de material para coroas e conservas, e comecei a coser para o nosso bebé (um rapaz!).

In September autumn arrived (my favourite season in this country). The countryside was ripe with foraging possibilities and I made wreaths and preserves. I also started sewing for our baby (a boy!).

Em Outubro acabei o coin quilt que tinha começado em 2009, fiz clutches com botões e continuei a fazer arranjos de flores com coisas apanhadas no nosso jardim.

In October I finally completed the coin quilt I had started in 2009, made button clutches and kept on raiding our garden for flower arranging material.

Novembro foi o mês dos quilts: escrevi uma série de posts dedicados ao assunto e lancei os meus quilt kits para principiantes.

November was quilt month: I wrote a series of posts on the subject and launched my quilt kits for beginners.

Em Dezembro partilhei convosco ideias e sugestões para mais um Natal feito em casa.

In December I shared with you some ideas and suggestions for another homemade Christmas.

Espero que 2012 seja um ano em grande para todos nós! :)

Lençóis Antigos :: Old Sheets

Nas arrumações de fim de ano, encontrei uma série de lençóis antigos de linho e daquele algodão encorpado que já não se fabrica e que eu adoro. Planos para eles: uma forra para a alcofa, cortinados para o nosso quarto, uma toalha de mesa (com guardanapos a condizer, claro) e lençóis para a cama de grades.

Whilst tidying up and packing what's left of 2011, I came across a number of old sheets made out of linen and of that crisp cotton which I love and is impossible to find nowadays. I've got big plans for turning them into several new things: a lining for the moses basket, blinds for our bedroom, a tablecloth (with matching napkins, of course) and sheets for the baby's cot.

A sala está pintada e arrumada, temos um sofá novo e a árvore de Natal está finalmente pronta! É parecida com a árvore de 2010 e, a meu ver, só tem vantagens: é leve, despretensiosa, diferente, grátis e em Janeiro servirá para acender a lareira!

The sitting room is painted and put together, we've got a new sofa and the Christmas tree is finally up! It's similar to the 2010 tree and as far as I see it, it has a lot going for it: it's light, unpretentious, different, free and in January it will help light the fire!

À semelhança de em anos anteriores (2008; 2010), hoje fiz os meus cartões de Natal com papel branco e restos de tecidos em cores festivas. Simples, rápidos, baratos e ecológicos!

Just like in previous years (2008; 2010), today I made my Christmas cards using white card stock and bits of leftover fabric in festive colours. Simple, quick, cheap and eco-friendly!

Spéculoos

Por esta altura do ano, as cozinhas do norte da Europa começam a cheirar a bolachas de gengibre — há um ano fi-las, mas este ano apeteceu-me experimentar algo diferente. O Tiago e eu vamos muitas vezes a Bruxelas e há uns meses trouxe de lá material para fazer os famosos spéculoos: um livro, uma forma de madeira e a mistura de especiarias. Ao princípio não consegui usar a forma especial e recorri a cortadores de bolachas normais; passadas umas horas (sim, porque esta receita leva 1 kg de farinha e dá para muitas dúzias de bolachas), já com a cozinha mais quente e com a massa mais moldável, lá acertei com a espessura correcta e consegui fazer os moinhos. As bolachas são óptimas e a casa ficou a cheirar a Natal!

Around this time of the year, kitchens in northern Europe start to smell like gingerbread — last year I made some but this year I wanted to try something a bit different. Tiago and I often go to Brussels and a couple of months ago I bought there some equipment to make the famous spéculoos: a book, a traditional wooden mould and some spice mixture. At first I couldn't figure out how to use the mould so I went for normal cookie cutters; a couple of hours later (yes, since this recipe calls for 1 kg of flour and yields many dozens of biscuits), with the kitchen warmer and the dough much more pliable, I managed to get it right and made some nice mills. The biscuits taste great and our home now smells like Christmas!

Enquanto o Tiago pinta a sala de branco, eu faço cortinados. Não gosto mesmo nada de fazer cortinados, e parece-me que o Tiago já não pode ver tinta à frente... mas, cada dia que passa, estamos mais perto da meta: uma sala em que nos sintamos em casa.

Whilst Tiago paints our sitting room white, I'm busy making curtains. I really dislike curtain making and I suspect Tiago is sick of painting... but each day that goes by we feel we're a step closer to our target: a sitting room where we feel at home.

Embrulhar Presentes :: Wrapping Presents

Desde pequena que adoro embrulhar presentes. À semelhança da minha mãe, a última gaveta da escrivaninha do meu quarto estava reservada para rolos de papel, laços, fitas e afins. O trabalho que mais gozo me deu enquanto adolescente foi estar numa loja de decoração a fazer embrulhos durante a época de Natal. Lembro-me que a minha tia-bisavó (que sempre viveu em casa da minha avó) guardava todos os bocadinhos de papel e de fita para mais tarde reutilizar, e eu própria sou incapaz de deitar fora caixas, mapas, jornais com caracteres exóticos, frascos, bocados de tecido... e perco a cabeça com rolos de papel de embrulho. Sei que há mil e uma maneiras criativas de embrulhar um presente, mas às vezes o que apetece mesmo é usar um bom papel espesso, atar uma fita larga a toda a volta e finalizar com um grande laçarote!

Ever since I was a child I have loved wrapping presents. Emulating my mother, I had reserved the last drawer in my bedroom desk solely for wrapping paper, ribbons, bows and so forth. My favourite job as a teenager was to work in a home décor shop wrapping gifts during the Christmas season. I remember my great great aunt (who always lived with my grandmother) squirreling away bits of paper and string and I myself am incapable of throwing away any sort of boxes, maps, exotic newspapers, jars, fabric pieces... and I can't resist buying rolls of wrapping paper. I know there are a million different ways to creatively wrap a present but sometimes you just can't beat a piece of good, sturdy wrapping paper, a wide strip of ribbon going all around the gift and a big, fat bow on top of it all!

Ontem o carteiro trouxe-me duas caixas repletas de tricots para o bebé: uma veio da minha mãe, a outra da minha sogra. Gradualmente, tenho andado a lavar e a arrumar o enxoval e o quarto e sinto-me cheia de sorte por estarmos a receber tanta roupa emprestada, herdada, comprada e feita especialmente para esta criança. Entre mãe, avó, sogra, cunhada, tias e amigas, é bom sentir que, apesar de longe, estou rodeada de ajudas e afectos.

Yesterday the postman brought me two boxes filled with baby hand-knits: one was sent by my mother, the other one by my mother-in-law. I've gradually been washing and organising both the clothes and the nursery, always feeling so lucky that we're being given so much that's either inherited, borrowed, bought or especially made for this baby. Amongst mother, grandmother, mother-in-law, sister-in-law, aunts and friends, it's lovely to feel that, although far away, I'm surrounded by so much help and affection.

Natal Natural :: Natural Christmas

À medida que a escuridão avança, o frio aperta e a gravidez progride, os meus níveis de energia vão diminuindo — por isso, parece-me que as decorações de Natal vão ser bastante simples cá por casa. Há um ano, enalteci as virtudes dos passeios pelo campo como fontes de elementos decorativos natalícios; este ano, chamo a atenção para as prateleiras do supermercado. Laranjas, limões e tangerinas são tão evocativos do Natal quanto pinhas e azevinho, não acham?

As days get colder and darker and my pregnancy progresses, I feel my energy levels going down — so I guess my 2011 Christmas decorations will be quite low-key. Last year I raved about the virtues of country foraging for natural christmassy elements; this year, I draw your attention to supermarket shelves. Oranges, lemons and mandarines are as evocative of Christmas as holly and pine cones, wouldn't you agree?

Queques de Chocolate :: Chocolate Muffins

Em tardes frias, escuras e chuvosas, nada melhor do que fazer um bolo. Há uns dias apeteceu-me comer queques de chocolate — folheei os meus livros de receitas e acabei por fazer os queques deste livro. Pontos a favor: são rápidos e fáceis de fazer (aliás, é uma receita ideal para crianças). Pontos contra: são bons, mas não são excelentes. Se quiserem experimentar, a receita aparece aqui (se bem que em medidas americanas).

On dark, cold, rainy afternoons, there's nothing better than baking a cake. A few days ago I had a craving for chocolate muffins — I flipped through my recipe books and ended up making the muffins from this book. In favour: they're quick and easy (in fact, it's the perfect child-friendly recipe). Against them: they're good but they're not amazing. Hoje é feriado em Portugal e muita gente aproveita para enfeitar a árvore de Natal. No norte da Europa, as pessoas acenderam a primeira vela de advento no domingo passado. A verdade é que estamos em plena época natalícia! Aqui por casa ainda andamos em pinturas e remodelações, mas espero começar a decorar a casa este fim-de-semana. E vocês, têm grandes planos para este Natal?

Today is a bank holiday in Portugal and many people use the day to decorate their Christmas tree. In northern Europe, the first candle of Advent was lit last Sunday. Truth is, Christmas season has begun! Here at our house we're still painting and re-decorating but I'm hoping to start making our home look more christmassy this weekend. What about you, have you got great plans for this Christmas?

Flores de Novembro :: November Flowers

Crumpets

Crumpets são algo que só provei em Inglaterra. Uma espécie de panquecas mais pequenas, altas e fermentadas, são especialmente bons torrados e a escorrer manteiga e/ou doce. Fazê-los é fácil (apesar de demorar bastante tempo porque o lume tem de estar baixo) mas é preciso ter uma forma circular especial — na falta dela, usei o aro de metal que o Tiago usa para empratar os cozinhados deliciosos com que ele às vezes me brinda ao fim-de-semana. A receita que usei saiu no jornal de domingo e está disponível aqui.

Crumpets are something I only tasted for the first time in England. A sort of small, thick, yeasty pancakes, they're especially good toasted and dripping with butter and/or jam. Making them is easy (although it takes a while because you must cook them over a gentle heat) but you must use a special circular mould — I didn't have one so I used the metal ring Tiago uses to prepare his weekend gourmet dishes (rare but absolutely delicious). The recipe was published in Sunday's paper and is available here.

Quando há uns tempos mostrei este xaile/manta que a minha mãe tricotou para o bebé, houve quem me tivesse perguntado como tinha sido feita. Finalmente pedi à minha mãe as instruções — aqui estão elas:

Xaile/Manta de Bebé

Tamanho final: 1 m x 1 m

Fio: 10 novelos de 50 g (para agulhas 4 / 4,5 mm) 100% lã

resto de lã em tom contrastante (para o ponto caseado)

Agulhas: 5,5 mm (para que a manta fique maleável, é importante usar o número de agulhas acima do indicado nos novelos)

Montar 5 malhas.

Tricotar em ponto jarreteira (sempre meia ou sempre liga), aumentando 1 malha de cada lado, a cada 2 carreiras, até ter chegado ao final do 5º novelo.

Diminuir 1 malha de cada lado a cada duas carreiras, até voltar a ter apenas 5 malhas.

A while ago I showed you this shawl/blanket my mother has knitted for the baby. Since some of you wished to know how it was made, I asked my mother for instructions — here they are:

Baby Shawl/Blanket

Finished size: 1 m x 1 m

Yarn: 10 skeins of 100% wool (50 g each) for 4 / 4.5 mm needles

some leftovers in a contrasting colour (for the blanket stitch)

Needles: 5.5 mm (in order for the shawl to become soft and malleable, it's important to choose thicker needles than the ones the yarn calls for)

Cast on 5 stitches.

Work in garter stitch (work every row as a knit row).

Increase 1 stitch on each side every 2 rows until you reach the end of your 5th skein.

Decrease 1 stitch on each side every 2 rows until you are left with only 5 stitches.

Cast off.

Overcast in blanket stitch.

Double Irish Chain Quilt :: Finished!

Lembram-se deste quilt top que a minha mãe fez há quase dois anos? É um double Irish chain quilt e está finalmente acabado! Foi acolchoado numa máquina longarm pela Chris (que me foi recomendada pela Katy) e o binding foi cosido à mão por mim. Estou mesmo contente por tê-lo na nossa cama.

Remember this quilt top my mother made almost two years ago? It's a double Irish chain quilt and it's finished, at last! Chris (who can highly recommended by Katy) quilted it on her longarm machine and I finished sewing the binding by hand. I'm really thrilled to have it on our bed.

Autumn :: Roasted Chestnuts

Apesar de não ser grande amiga de rotinas, vibro com rituais — daí dar tanta importância às estações do ano e a tudo o que elas representam. Um dos pontos altos do meu Outono é comer castanhas assadas, seja na rua (em Lisboa são vendidas em todas as esquinas de Outubro a Dezembro), seja em casa. Ontem assámos castanhas — distraímo-nos e ficaram demasiado tempo no forno, mas mesmo assim deu para matar saudades.

Although I'm not too keen on routines, I'm extremely fond of rituals — that's why seasonal pleasures resonate so much with me. One of the high points of my autumn is eating roast chestnuts, either in the streets (they're sold in every corner in Lisbon from October to December) or at home. Yesterday we roasted some — we lost track of time and overcooked them but even so they gave us a little taste of home.

As instruções que escrevi para os quilt kits são praticamente um mini-curso de quilting. Hoje mostro-vos um pequeno extracto das mesmas — a parte em que explico como fazer um quilter's knot. Este nó não só é ideal para acolchoar um quilt e coser um binding, como também é útil para coser à mão em geral.

The instructions I've written for the quilt kits are almost like a mini quilting course. Today I'm going to show you a little extract — the part where I explain how to make a quilter's knot. This type of knot is perfect not only for hand-quilting and hand-sewing the binding, but also for hand-sewing in general.

Comece por passar a linha três ou quatro vezes à volta da agulha.

Start by wrapping the thread around the needle three or four times.

Com o indicador e o polegar, puxe a linha enrolada ao longo da agulha e a todo o comprimento da linha.

Using your index finger and thumb, pull the wrapped thread all the way down the needle and until you reach the end of your entire length of thread.

No fim da linha ter-se-á formado um nó perfeito. Se for necessário, corte a cauda excedente.

You should now have a perfect knot at the end of your thread. If necessary, cut the remaining tail.

Muito obrigada pelas reacções positivas aos quilt kits! Fico muito contente por terem ficado entusiasmadas e estou a fazer os possíveis por pô-los rapidamente na loja.

Cada kit contém:

- tecidos para fazer o top

- tecido para o binding

- batting (enchimento) 100% algodão com scrim (estabilizador que permite acolchoar à distância máxima de 20 cm entre linhas de quilting) da marca Hobbs

- tecido para o backing

- duas agulhas para quilting (curtas e finas em dois tamanhos diferentes), caso pretenda acolchoar à mão e para coser o binding

- instruções em português, impressas, detalhadas e com fotografias a cores

(todos os tecidos são 100% algodão e foram lavados e engomados antes de terem sido cortados à medida)

Ontem nos comentários surgiram algumas dúvidas, que vou tentar esclarecer agora:

Não tenho máquina de costura — é possível fazer tudo à mão?

Claro que sim, mas demora bastante mais tempo. Se quiser um projecto para ocupar os longos serões de Inverno, este é ideal. Se tiver pressa/for impaciente, uma máquina ajuda bastante.

Eu quero um kit! Posso reservar já?

Ainda estou em processo de fotografar todos os kits que vou ter disponíveis nesta primeira fase. Espero tê-los à venda na loja dentro de muito pouco tempo!

Preciso mesmo de um walking foot para acolchoar à máquina?

Um walking foot (se não me engano, em português chama-se pé de duplo arrasto) é muitíssimo útil quando se acolchoa à máquina (e mesmo para coser tecidos com alguma elasticidade). Graças a ele, as três camadas (top + batting + binding) movem-se ao mesmo tempo, evitando assim pregas e tecidos deslocados. A alternativa é acolchoar à mão — demora algum tempo mas o resultado é ainda mais giro.

É possível encomendar para o Brasil?

Tenho tido alguns problemas com os correios brasileiros, por isso só faço envios para o Brasil em correio registado. Isso encarece bastante os portes, eu sei, mas infelizmente não tenho outra alternativa.

Each kit includes:

- fabrics to make the quilt top

- fabric to make the binding

Yesterday in the comment sections there were some questions which I'm going to try to answer today:

I don't own a sewing machine — is it possible to do everything by hand?

Yes, it's possible but it does take some time. If you're looking for a project for long winter evenings, then this is it; however, if you are in a rush/are impatient by nature, a sewing machine can be a huge help.

Do I really need a walking foot to quilt by machine?

A walking foot is extremely useful when you wish to quilt using your sewing machine (and even when you are sewing fabrics that have a little elasticity to them). It makes the three layers (top + batting + binding) move along at the same pace, which avoids puckers and other odd situations. The alternative is to quilt by hand — it does take some time but the result is even lovelier.

I want a kit! Can I pre-order one?

I'm still in the process of photographing all the quilts that will be available in this first phase. I hope to have them for sale in the shop in the next few days.

Will you ship abroad?

Of course I will!

Querem aprender a fazer um quilt?

Não sabem bem por onde começar, que tecidos seleccionar, onde arranjar enchimento de qualidade, como comprar apenas a quantidade de materiais de que precisam de maneira a evitar desperdícios?

Não querem investir já em ferramentas como cortadores rotativos e bases de corte, nem perder tempo a lavar e engomar tecidos?

Não encontram um projecto simples mas útil, com instruções detalhadas e ilustradas, de preferência em português?

Eu posso ajudar.

Brevemente terei disponíveis kits completos para fazer um quilt de bebé. Nesta primeira fase haverá dois modelos (aqueles que aparecem nestas imagens): um de rectângulos desencontrados, a fazer lembrar os tijolos das casas inglesas, e um com quadrados regulares, a remeter para os azulejos portugueses.

Este tamanho de quilt é ideal como colcha para uma cama de grades, manta para o carro, tapete de actividades ou até mesmo para pendurar na parede (quando tirámos estas fotografias ficámos cheios de vontade de ter uns quilts pendurados aqui e ali). Por ser relativamente pequeno, não exige um enorme investimento em termos de materiais nem de tempo. E as instruções passo-a-passo tiram todas as dúvidas que possam surgir ao longo do processo. Por outro lado, já vem tudo lavado, engomado e cortado à medida — é só abrir a caixa e começar a coser.

Amanhã falarei mais sobre aquilo que cada kit inclui. Haverá combinações de tecidos para todas as preferências (eu gosto de todos os conjuntos!). Estou muito entusiasmada com este novo projecto — fazer um quilt é mesmo especial.

Do you want to learn how to make a quilt?

Maybe you're not quite sure where to begin, which fabrics to pick, where to find a high quality wadding/batting, how to buy just the amount of materials you actually need in order to avoid waste?

You might want to wait a bit before you start investing in tools like rotary cutters and cutting mats and you have no wish to use up your precious time washing and pressing fabrics?

You can't find a simple yet useful project with detailed instructions and lots of pictures?

I can help you.

Very soon I'll have available complete kits to make baby quilts. In this early stage there will be two designs (the ones pictured above): one featuring non-aligned rectangles (just like the bricks you see in English houses) and the other one featuring regular squares (which make me think of Portuguese tiles).

The size of these quilts makes them ideal as cot/crib bedspreads, car blankets, play mats or even to hang on a wall (when we were taking these photos we though how great it would be to have a few quilts hanging on our walls). Because is relatively small, you don't have to make a huge investment either in terms of materials and time. And the step-by-step instructions are sure to help you solve any doubts you may have along the way. On the other hand, everything is already washed, pressed and neatly cut — you just have to open up the box and start sewing.

Tomorrow I'll tell you what exactly each kit includes. There will be fabric combinations for every preference (I love all the sets!). I'm really excited about this new project — making a quilt is indeed something very special.

Quilts & Quilting :: Pre-washing Fabrics

A primeira coisa que faço quando compro tecidos é pô-los na máquina de lavar roupa. A questão de lavar ou não os tecidos antes de começar um quilt (ou qualquer outro projecto de costura) é discutida frequentemente em livros e blogs — pessoalmente, lavo sempre os meus tecidos antes de os utilizar.

Pré-lavar os tecidos apresenta muitas vantagens: os tecidos de algodão encolhem sempre um bocado, por isso é melhor que encolham antes de estarem cosidos a outros; quando vêm das fábricas, os tecidos ainda têm restos de tintas e outros químicos, e uma simples lavagem elimina tudo isso; alguns tecidos, sobretudo os mais antigos, têm tendência para desbotar, por isso o melhor é fazer um teste antes de os pôr na máquina ou usar uma daquelas folhas que atraem a tinta.

Como já disse, os meus tecidos vão directos para a máquina. Depois estendo-os (mesmo que seja dentro de casa, situação que, neste país, acontece 90% das vezes) e passo-os a ferro enquanto ainda estão ligeiramente húmidos. Há quem os lave à mão, em água fria, mas eu prefiro lavá-los logo a 50ºC num ciclo curto (no caso de tecidos de algodão, claro). Se não quiserem que os tecidos desfiem, podem sempre chuleá-los ou cortá-los com uma tesoura de zigzag. Eu não faço nada disso.

The first thing I do after buying fabrics is to toss them into the washing machine. The question of whether or not to wash fabrics before starting a quilt (or any other sewing project) is frequently discussed in books and blogs — I personally always wash my fabrics before I use them.

Pre-washing fabrics has many advantages: cotton fabrics always shrink a little so it's best that they do so before they're all stitched up; when they come from the mills they still have some leftover dyes and chemicals and a simple washing will eliminate that; some fabrics, especially vintage ones, have a tendency to bleed so you might want to test them beforehand or include one of those colour catcher sheets in the wash.

As I said, my fabrics go directly into the washing machine. Then I hang them to dry (even if it needs to be indoors, which happens 90% of the time in this country) and iron them while they're still a bit damp. Some people wash their fabrics by hand in cold water but I prefer to wash them in a short cycle at 50ºC (I'm obviously talking about cotton fabrics). If you don't want them to ravel you might zigzag or overlock the edges or cut them with some zigzag scissors. I do none of that.

Quilts & Quilting :: Equipment

Para além de uma máquina de costura e de um ferro de engomar decente, há outro material necessário para fazer um quilt. Só um aparte: sou da opinião de que se deve comprar material de primeira qualidade: mais vale ir comprando as coisas espaçadamente, pesquisar bem e esperar por oportunidades, e saber que vão portar-se bem e durar. Por outro lado, o processo é sempre mais fácil e os resultados muito mais perfeitos e duradouros (assim como bolos feitos com boa manteiga e bom chocolate são sempre melhores). Acredito sinceramente que, em tudo, mais vale ter menos e melhor, do que o contrário.

In addition to a sewing machine and a decent iron, there are some other things you need when you wish to make a quilt. Just a side note: I believe that you should buy first quality material: it's best to buy things sparingly, to do some research and to wait for deals, and know that they will perform well and last longer. When you do this, the process is always easier and the results always better (just like cakes made with good butter and good chocolate are always superior). I honestly believe that in life it's best to have less things but better quality things, than the opposite.

1. régua: no mundo do quilting trabalha-se normalmente em polegadas e uma régua de acrílico comprida (a minha tem 8 1/2'' x 24'') é muito útil para cortar os tecidos com precisão. Por outro lado, estas réguas incluem transferidores, bons para quando se quer cortar fitas de viés ou triângulos de todos os feitios.

2. base de corte: de um lado em polegadas, do outro em centímetros, estas bases de corte são usadas em conjunto com as réguas de acrílico e os cortadores rotativos. Deve comprar-se o tamanho maior que for possível.

3. tesoura pequena: boa para cortar linhas.

4. tesoura de alfaiate: um dos mais importantes investimentos para quem cose é uma boa tesoura de alfaiate, grande e pesada. Desde que seja bem tratada e reservada exclusivamente para tecidos, durará uma vida.

5. cortador rotativo: excelente para cortar os tecidos com rapidez e precisão.

1. acrylic ruler: a long ruler (mine is 8 1/2'' x 24'') is invaluable for cutting fabric with accuracy. It also includes lines in different angles so that you can cut bias tapes and all sorts of triangles.

2. cutting mat: inches on one side, cm on the other, to be used with a ruler and a rotary cutter. You should buy the largest mat you can afford.

3. small pair of scissors: for cutting thread.

4. dressmaker's shears: one of the most important investments a person who sews can make is a large, heavy pair of scissors. As long as you treat them well and keep them purely for cutting fabric, they should last you a lifetime.

5. rotary cutter: excellent for cutting fabric quickly and accurately.

6. alfinetes: eu gosto de alfinetes grandes e com cabeças de plástico, mas é uma questão pessoal.

7. abre-casas: para quando é precido descoser...

8. linha para a máquina de costura.

9. pé calcador de 1/4": não é uma necessidade vital, até porque é possível usar um pé calcador normal para fazer costuras com 0,5 cm (1/4'' = 0,6 cm). No entanto, quando se está a seguir um esquema é importante usar as margens de costura indicadas ou, pelo menos, manter sempre margens constantes.

10. walking foot: para acolchoar à máquina. Este pé calcador faz com que as três camadas (top + batting + backing) se desloquem ao mesmo tempo, evitando rugas e outras situações indesejáveis.

6. pins: I like long pins with plastic heads but it's a matter of personal taste.

7. seam ripper: sometimes you really have to use it...

8. all-purpose thread.

9. 1/4'' foot: this isn't strictly necessary — you can get away with using the edge of your regular presser foot to sew 0.5 cm seams (1/4'' = 0.6 cm). However, if you're following a pattern it's important to use the seam allowances it tells you to or, at least, always keep them consistent.

10. walking foot: for machine quilting. This special foot makes the three layers (top + wadding/batting + backing) move at the same time, which avoids puckers and other undesirable situations.

11. agulhas para acolchoar à mão: muito curtas e finas, também são úteis para coser o binding à mão.

12. dedal: eu gosto deste dedal de couro, mas um dedal normal de metal também resulta.

13. linha de quilting: própria para acolchoar à mão, esta linha tem um revestimento (uma espécie de cera) que a torna mais resistente.

14. alfinetes-de-ama curvos: óptimos para "alinhavar" as três camadas e mantê-las no sítio enquanto se acolchoa o quilt (ver utilização aqui).

15. ganchos para binding: úteis para quando se cose o debrum à mão (ver utilização aqui).

16. caneta de tinta solúvel em água: boa para marcar as linhas para acolchoar.

17. fita adesiva: de pintor ou de caixotes, o importante é que seja larga e resistente. Usa-se para fixar o backing ao chão quando se faz a sanduíche.

11. hand-quilting needles: short and fine, they're also great when you sew the binding by hand.

12. thimble: I like this leather thimble but you can use a regular metal one.

13. quilting thread: for hand-quilting only, this thread has a special coating (a sort of wax) that makes it very hard-wearing.

14. curved safety pins: great for "basting" the three layers together and keep them in place whilst quilting (see them in use here).

15. binding clips: useful when hand-sewing the binding (see them in use here).

16. water soluble pen: good for marking those quilting lines.

17. sticky tape: painter's tape or packing tape, it must be large and quite heavy duty. You'd use it to tape the backing to the floor when making the quilt sandwich.

Quilts & Quilting :: Choosing Fabrics

A parte mais fundamental na execução de um quilt está na escolha dos tecidos. Em primeiro lugar, convém seleccionar tecidos da mesma categoria, ou seja, só tecidos de algodão, só sedas, só fazendas ou só flanelas. Isto não só dá coesão ao quilt, como facilita em termos de lavagens e de resistência das fibras e das costuras. Depois, há que pensar no fim a que o quilt se destina. É para um bebé? Como vai ser o seu quarto? Os pais gostam de interiores tradicionais ou modernos? É para um homem de 60 anos? Para uma rapariga cheia de vivacidade? Ou para um casal que adora viajar?

Seguem-se as cores e os padrões. Se tiverem interesse em ler um pouco sobre a roda das cores, este artigo e este artigo podem ajudar. Ou então podem fazer como eu e confiar nos vossos instintos. Em relação aos padrões, o ideal é atingir um equilíbrio entre padrões grandes, médios e pequenos. Eu gosto de misturar estampados figurativos (flores, bonecos) com motivos gráficos, de preferência monocromáticos (riscas, pintas, quadrados). Mais uma vez, faço aquilo que sinto que resulta. Isto não pretende ser uma lição — estou apenas a contar-vos como o meu processo de escolha funciona.

As fotografias que mostro hoje são um exercício: imaginei que iria fazer um quilt para uma cama de grades e escolhi combinações de tecidos em função de situações imaginárias: para raparigas, há os incontornáveis cor-de-rosa e azul-claro, mas também verde e violeta; para rapazes, tentei evitar flores e escolhi motivos gráficos em azul e verde; para pais convencionais, as clássicas cores pastel; para pais que não têm medo da cor, encarnado, amarelo e cor-de-laranja; para pais alternativos, tons de cinzento, mostarda, verde-água e verde-azeitona.

Feita a selecção dos tecidos, há que começar a cortar e a construir o quilt!

The most important part when you're making a quilt is choosing the fabrics. For starters, you must remember to stick to fabrics that have the same weight, i.e., quilting cottons, silks, wools, flannels. Avoiding mixing different weights gives the quilt coherence and helps with future washings and the way fibers and seams will wear out. Then you have to think about who/what/where the quilt is for. Is it for a baby? What will the nursery look like? Do the parents prefer traditional or modern interiors? Is it for a 60-year-old man? For a very lively girl? Or maybe for a couple who loves traveling?

Then colours and patterns come into play. If you're interested in reading about the colour wheel, this post and this post are helpful. Or you can do as me and just trust your instincts. As for patterns, the best is to achieve a good balance of figurative prints (flowers, novelty) and graphic motifs, preferably monochromatic ones (stripes, spots and gingham). Again, I do whatever feels right. This isn't suppose to be a lesson — I'm just telling you how my process works.

The pictures I'm showing today are a kind of exercise: assuming I was going to make a cot/crib quilt, I picked fabric combinations with imaginary people in mind: for girls there are the imperative pinks and light blues, but also greens and violets; for boys I tried to stay away from flowers and went for graphic prints in blues and greens; for traditional parents I picked the classic pastel colours; for parents who aren't afraid of colour there are reds, yellows and oranges; for alternative parents I chose shades of grey, mustard, mint and olive green.

Once you've got your fabrics selected, it's time to start cutting and putting the quilt together!

Apesar do meu grande entusiasmo, sou relativamente nova no mundo dos quilts. Frequentei umas aulas dadas pela Luísa (dona da loja dotQuilts) em 2008, fui fazendo umas coisas em patchwork (almofadas, sacos, cestos), mas quilts do princípio ao fim ainda só fiz seis. Hoje vou falar-vos um pouco de cada um.

Despite my enormous enthusiasm, I'm quite new to the quilting world. I was taught some classes by Luísa (the owner of the dotQuilts shop) back in 2008, have used patchwork techniques to make a few things (cushions, bags, baskets) but so far I've only made six quilts from beginning to end. Today I'm going to tell you a bit about each of them.

O primeiro quilt que fiz foi para uma amiga que ia começar um doutoramento em Florença. Escolhi azuis e verdes, cores que associo a ela, e optei por um esquema de grandes triângulos rectângulos, enquadrados por um border largo de um só tecido. O tamanho é de sala, ideal para ler, fazer sestas e estudar.

The first quilt I completed was for a friend who was going to Florence for her PhD. I chose blues and greens, colours that make me think of her, and went for a scheme of half square triangles framed by a simple border. I made it as a lap quilt, perfect for reading, napping and studying.

Quando a primeira das minhas amigas anunciou que iria ter um bebé (uma rapariga, ainda por cima), soube imediatamente que lhe queria fazer um quilt. Usei tecidos e um charm pack da colecção Snippets da Moda para fazer uma colcha para a cama de grades.

When my first friend told me she was expecting a baby (a girl, no less), I immediately thought that I wanted to make a quilt for her cot. I used fabrics and a charm pack from the Snippets collection for Moda.

O meu presente de casamento para os meus amigos holandeses foi um quilt para a sala. Na altura eles tinham um sofá encarnado e papel de parede com motivos em cinzento, por isso achei melhor cingir-me a tecidos lisos e a um modelo de patchwork bastante simples. Usei cinco Kona Cotons, que cortei em quadrados e dispus de maneira a que formassem grandes cruzes.

My wedding present for my Dutch friends was a quilt for their sitting room. At the time that had a red sofa and a wall papered in grey motifs, so I thought I should stick to plain fabrics and a simple pattern. I used five Kona Cottons, which I cut in squares and laid out into large crosses.

Um quilt é um óptimo presente de casamento, por isso quando a minha amiga seguinte se casou, fiz-lhe um com triângulos em tons de azuis, verdes e beges. A ideia original tinha sido fazer um quilt de sala, mas baralhei-me nas contas e acabei por ter de fazer uns acrescentos a branco. Eles usam-no aos pés da cama mas dá perfeitamente para uma cama de solteiro.

A quilt is a great wedding gift so when my next friend got married I made her one in shades of blue, green and beige. The original idea had been to make a lap quilt but I got my calculations wrong and ended up having to add some white borders to it. They use it at the end of their bed but it should fit a single bed perfectly.

Segue-se o coin quilt de que tanto tenho falado nos últimos tempos. Coin quilt é o nome que se dá a este modelo de quilt, também conhecido por stacked coins ou Chinese coins (o esquema pode ter algumas variações). Comecei a fazê-lo motivada por um sew-along (muitas pessoas decidem fazer o mesmo projecto e vão partilhando as suas experiências online) e a colcha está agora no nosso quarto em Lisboa (em casa do meu pai).

Next comes the coin quilt I've shown you recently. Coin quilt is the name of this pattern, also known as stacked coins or Chinese coins (the pattern itself can have several variations). I started it motivated by a sew-along (lots of people decide to make the same projects and share their experiences online) and it now covers our bed in Lisbon (in my father's flat).

Por último, um quilt que fiz em Março para a minha sobrinha bebé mas que ainda não tinha mostrado aqui. O tamanho é de cama de grades (90 x 120 cm) e os tecidos são todos da colecção Swell da Moda (excepto os quadrados usados no backing). Tinha dois charm packs postos de parte para um projecto especial e esta foi a ocasião ideal para os utilizar. Raramente gosto de todos os tecidos de uma colecção, por isso não sou grande cliente de charm packs, jelly rolls, layer cakes, etc. (estou a referir-me a conjuntos de tecidos pré-cortados). Mas, quando se encontra um conjunto de que se gosta, não há dúvida de que todo o processo de seleccionar, comprar e combinar os tecidos para um quilt fica extremamente facilitado e rápido.

Estou neste momento a trabalhar em novos quilts, que espero poder mostrar-vos em breve. Tenho uma amiga que se acabou de casar, outra que está noiva, um bebé quase a nascer... e novos projectos em desenvolvimento.

And finally a quilt I made for my baby niece last March but hadn't shared it here yet. It's a cot quilt (90 x 120 cm) and all the fabrics are from the Swell collection for Moda (except for the pink gingham I used as backing). I had two Swell charm packs put aside for a special project and this was the ideal occasion to use them. I rarely like every single fabric of whole collection so I'm not a great buyer of charm packs, jelly rolls, layer cakes, etc. (I'm talking about sets of pre-cut fabrics). But when you find a set you love, there's no doubt that the whole process of selecting, buying and conjugating fabrics for a quilt turns out much easier and faster.

I'm now working on new quilts which I'm hoping to share with you soon. I've got a friend who's just got married, another one who's engaged, a baby on the way... and new projects under development.

Autumn :: Apple & Cinnamon Cake

Num fim-de-semana de Outono, nada sabe melhor do que um bolo de maçã e canela ao lanche. Há uns tempos uma vizinha minha deu-me uma série de maçãs Bramley da sua árvore e, em vez de doces e geleias, lembrei-me de fazer um bolo. Se também o quiserem experimentar, aqui fica a receita:

Bolo de Maçã e Canela

250 g açúcar

150 g manteiga

200 g farinha

1 c. chá de fermento

4 ovos

4 maçãs

canela em pó

1. Untar a forma com manteiga, povilhá-la com canela e cobrir a base com açúcar. Ligar o forno a 180ºC.

2. Descascar as maçãs, cortá-las em fatias finas e polvilhá-las com bastante canela.

3. Bater bem a manteiga com 200 g de açúcar até a mistura ficar cremosa e esbranquiçada.

4. Juntar 4 gemas de ovo e bater.

5. Noutra taça, bater 4 claras em castelo e adicionar-lhes os restantes 50 g de açúcar.

6. Ir incorporando no primeiro preparado, alternadamente, as claras em castelo e a farinha (cuidado para não bater demasiado a massa).

7. Colocar uma camada de fatias de maçã na forma, depois um pouco de massa, em seguida outra camada de maçãs, depois o resto da massa e terminar com as restantes maçãs (nesta altura pode achar que a massa é curta mas a sério que chega: o truque é alternar camadas grossas de fatias de maçã com camadas finas de massa).

8. O bolo coze durante cerca de meia-hora mas, como todos os fornos são diferentes, é importante ir vigiando a cozedura. Não deixar cozer demasiado, sob pena de o bolo ficar muito seco.

On an autumn weekend nothing tastes batter than an apple and cinnamon cake for afternoon tea. Some weeks ago, a lovely neighbour gave me a few Bramley apples from her tree and instead of making yet another preserve, I decided to bake a cake. In case you're interested in making one yourself, here's the recipe:

Apple and Cinnamon Cake

250 g caster sugar

150 g butter

200 g flour

1 teaspoon baking powder

4 eggs

4 cooking apples

ground cinnamon

1. Grease the tin, coat it with ground cinnamon and cover the bottom in sugar. Preheat the oven to 180ºC.

2. Peel and core the apples and cut them into fine slices. Sprinkle them with a fair amount of cinnamon.

3. Cream the butter with 200 g of sugar until the mixture is white and fluffy.

4. Add 4 egg yolks and beat them in well.

5. In another bowl, beat 4 egg whites until they reach soft peaks and then beat in the remaining 50 g of sugar.

6. Incorporate a spoonful of eggs whites into the cake batter, then some flour, then egg whites and so on. Be careful not to overwork it.

7. Place a layer of apple slices in the tin, then a layer of cake batter, then a layer of apples, then the remaining batter and finish with the apples (at this point you may think that you're a little short on batter but it really is enough: the trick is to alternate rather thick layers of apple slices with thin layers of cake batter).

8. Bake for approximately half an hour but since every oven is unique, do pay attention. Do not overbake it or else the cake will be too dry.

Sejam executados por profissionais ou por amadores entusiastas, hoje em dia há quilts para todos os gostos. Os motivos geométricos tendem a ser mais simples (muitos quadrados e rectângulos, linhas paralelas ou por vezes assumidamente tortas), os tecidos lisos aparecem em abundância e há uma clara preferência pelo branco como elemento de base para o patchwork. Aqui ficam alguns exemplos:

Nem todos os quilts antigos são tradicionais e nem todos os quilts tradicionais são antigos. Esquemas como log cabin, irish chain, double wedding ring, todo o tipo de estrelas e até mesmo motivos em appliqué ainda hoje são trabalhados, e a escolha de tecidos pode conferir-lhes uma estética muito tradicional ou, pelo contrário, ultra-moderna. Por outro lado, encontram-se quilts antigos tão depurados ou com uma paleta de cores tão vibrante que não destoariam em qualquer interior contemporâneo. Aqui ficam alguns exemplos daquilo a que me refiro:

We can't say that old quilts are necessarily traditional or that every traditional quilt must surely be old. Patterns like the log cabin, Irish chain, double wedding ring, all manner of stars and even appliqué motifs are still interpreted today and the fabric choices can make them look extremely traditional or very modern. On the other hand, some antique quilts look so understated or feature such vibrant colours that you wouldn't be surprised to find them in a contemporary home. Quilts & Quilting :: What is a Quilt?

Afinal o que é um quilt? Qual a diferença entre patchwork e quilting? E faz sentido utilizar estes termos em inglês?

Um quilt é uma colcha. Quilting significa acolchoar, seja à mão, à máquina (doméstica ou long-arm), atando pequenos nós ou até cosendo botões em pontos estratégicos. Um quilt é composto por três camadas:

- top (a parte de cima), que pode ser feita de (1) pedaços de tecido cosidos uns aos outros (estes retalhos são os patches, que dão o nome ao patchwork); (2) apenas um tecido (no caso dos wholecloth quilts); (3) motivos em appliqué (pedaços de tecido aplicados em cima de um tecido-base).

- batting (US)/wadding (UK) (o enchimento), a camada isoladora, que confere corpo e peso ao quilt e que, conforme o material utilizado (algodão, lã, polyester), pode aquecer muito ou pouco. Normalmente usa-se um tipo de enchimento comercial fabricado especificamente para quilting, mas há quem use flanela e quem recicle tecidos velhos, cobertores, etc.

- backing (o forro), que pode ser em patchwork ou não (normalmente usa-se apenas um tecido).

Dá-se o nome de quilt sandwich a estas três camadas colocadas umas em cima das outras (top + batting + backing) para em seguida serem acolchoadas.

Depois de acolchoado, o quilt é debruado com uma fita a que se dá o nome de binding. O binding pode ser simples, duplo, cortado a direito ou em viés.

O termo quilting também é usado para significar o hobby e a indústria (que, por sinal, vale milhões nos EUA). Apesar de haver mantas de retalhos em todas as culturas, os quilts tal como os entendemos hoje em dia são herdeiros de uma forte tradição anglo-saxónica — daí a terminologia ser em inglês e as medidas imperiais (é quase impossível escapar às polegadas). Se tiverem interesse em explorar a história dos quilts, há dois livros de que gosto especialmente: The American Quilt. A History of Cloth and Comfort. 1750-1950 e Quilts 1700-2010. Hidden Histories, Untold Stories.

What exactly is a quilt? And what is the difference between patchwork and quilting?

A quilt is a type of bed cover. Quilting means stitching fabric layers together, either by hand or by machine (either domestic or long-arm), or even by sewing ties or buttons. A quilt is composed of three layers:

- top (the top fabric layer), which can be made out of (1) patchwork (patches of fabric sewn together to make blocks); (2) a single piece of fabric (in this case we'd call it a "wholecloth quilt"); (3) appliqué motifs (fabric shapes sewn onto a fabric background).

- batting (US)/wadding (UK), the filling, the insulating layer that gives the quilt body and substance and that, depending on the material chosen (cotton, wool, polyester), can be warmer or cooler. Quilters tend to use commercial batting sold especially for quilting, but some people choose flannel or recycle old fabrics, blankets, etc.

- backing, for which you can use a pieced cloth or a single fabric.

A quilt sandwich is when you place all these three layers over each other (top + batting + backing) to prepare them for the quilting step.

After having been quilted, the quilt is finished with a fabric strip called binding. Binding encloses raw edges and can be single, double, cut on the grain or on the bias.

Quilting also means the hobby or the industry (which, by the way, is worth millions in the USA). Acredito realmente em fazer coisas à mão. Vale a pena o esforço; vale a pena o tempo; vale a pena o empenho. E um quilt é das coisas mais especiais que uma pessoa pode fazer. Escolher os tecidos para o patchwork, dispô-los de maneira agradável, cosê-los, acrescentar o recheio e o forro, acolchoar todas as camadas e, por fim, coser o debrum — todos estes passos levam a que cada quilt fique impregnado de emoções e bons sentimentos. Fazer um quilt é fazer uma coisa para a vida, é pensar que será usado vezes sem conta e acalentar a esperança de que as gerações vindouras lhe darão algum valor.

Apesar de já ter feito várias referências a quilts neste blog, sinto que chegou a altura de lhes dedicar uma série de posts mais detalhados. Ao longo dos próximos dias vou tentar fornecer algumas explicações e fontes de inspiração sobre este assunto, com o objectivo de desmistificar termos e técnicas e na esperança de contagiar-vos com o meu entusiasmo. Vamos a isto?

I really believe in making things by hand. It's worth the effort; it's worth the time; it's worth the commitment. And a quilt is one of the most special things a person can make. Choosing the fabrics for the patchwork, arranging them in a pleasing manner, piecing them, adding the wadding/batting and the backing, quilting all the layers and, finally, binding it all together — all these steps fill every quilt with emotions and good feelings. Making a quilt is making something for life, it's thinking that it will be used over and over again, it's hoping that future generations will look at it and appreciate it.

Despite the fact that I've often mentioned quilts in this blog, I feel it's time to dedicate them a series of more detailed posts. Throughout the next days I'm going to try to provide you with some explanations and inspiration sources regarding this subject, in the hope of demystifying words and techniques and of infecting you with my enthusiasm. Outono Português :: Portuguese Autumn

Uma ida de fugida a Portugal deu para ver como o Outono é diferente em terras do sul. Tudo é mais seco, até os tons de verde, o campo tem um cheiro doce e o céu é azul.

Recentemente fiz algo completamente novo e diferente: a minha interpretação de um desenho animado. Em causa estava o Nemo, personagem principal do filme de 2003 da Pixar, e uma amiga que tem uma ligação especial a ele. Procurei inspiração e instruções na internet mas nada encontrei — então fiz um desenho tosco de um peixe-palhaço e, com feltro, enchimento e dois botões, fiz o Nemo que podem ver nas fotografias. Se o voltar a fazer, terei de corrigir as barbatanas: é que o Nemo tem uma mais pequena do que a outra...

Recently I made something totally new and different: my own interpretation of an animated individual. In question was Nemo, the main character in Pixar's 2003 film, and a friend of mine who's got a special connection to him. I looked for inspiration and tutorials online but found nothing — so I made a rough drawing of a clownfish and using felt, toy stuffing and two buttons, sewed the Nemo you can see in the pictures. If I ever make it again, I'll have to adjust the fins: the thing that makes Nemo unique is that his right fin is much smaller than his left fin...

Coin Quilt

O meu coin quilt está finalmente acabado! Comecei a cortar os tecidos em Março de 2009 e cosi toda a parte de cima (o chamado top) ao longo desse ano. Depois mudámo-nos para Inglaterra e ficou esquecido numa prateleira.... até que há dois meses lhe voltei a pegar. Acolchoei-o e debruei-o à mão durante muitos serões e agora está pronto para ir para o nosso quarto em Lisboa. Um quilt feito à mão é mesmo especial e o resultado compensa largamente todo o investimento que lhe dedicamos. Recomendo vivamente!

My coin quilt is finally finished! I started cutting fabrics back in March 2009 and sewed the top throughout that year. Then we moved to England and there it lay forgotten on a shelf... until I took it up again two months ago. I quilted and bound it by hand over many evenings and now it's ready to go into our bedroom in Lisbon. A handmade quilt is indeed something special and the result makes up for all the investment one puts in it. I highly recommend it!

Autumn :: Bulb Planting

Chegou novamente a altura de plantar bolbos, tanto dentro de casa (para florirem durante o Inverno), como no jardim (para florescerem na Primavera). Esta semana comecei com jacintos (instruções aqui em cima) e narcisos-de-papel. Há um ano foi assim.

It's that time of the year again: bulb season has begun! You can now plant bulbs indoors (to bloom all through winter) and in the garden (for flowers next spring). This week I've started with some prepared hyacinths (instructions above) and paperwhite narcissi. Here's what happened last year.

Tricots de Bebé :: Knitting for Baby

Tenho a enorme sorte de ter uma mãe que sabe e gosta de tricotar. E um bebé é a desculpa perfeita para procurar lãs e modelos e fazer experiências. Há uns tempos recebi estes dois tricots pelo correio: um xaile azul (adoro o pormenor do ponto de cobertor a branco) e um saco-cama branco. Ouvi dizer que já há mais alguns à minha espera...

I'm incredibily lucky to have a mother who can and likes to knit. And a baby is the perfect exuse to look for yarns and patterns and to experiment. A while ago I received these two hand-knitted things by post: a blue shawl (I love the detail of the white blanket stitch) and a white sleeping bag. I hear there are more things waiting for me...

Licor de Abrunho :: Damson Liqueur

Às vezes ouvimos contar que as nossas avós e bisavós faziam licores em casa. "Extraordinário!", pensamos, "que senhoras industriosas." Pois hoje eu venho desfazer um mito: fazer licor em casa é facílimo. Há dezenas de receitas disponíveis (a minha edição do Pantagruel tem 18) mas no fundo trata-se sempre de deixar macerar a fruta em álcool, açúcar e especiarias.

As duas fotografias foram tiradas com um mês de intervalo: é o nosso licor de abrunho, no dia em que foi feito e hoje. No Natal será filtrado e engarrafado — e bebido. O método é simples: meio quilo de fruta, 125 g de açúcar fino, raspa de um limão, um pau de canela e uma garrafa de vodka: tudo para dentro de um frasco grande e limpo (caso estivéssemos a viver em Portugal, teríamos usado aguardente). Agitar todos os dias. Esperar tês meses. Filtrar e engarrafar. O mais engraçado de tudo é que usei um frasco que a minha bisavó materna usava para fazer os licores lá de casa.

Sometimes we hear our family tell tales of how our grandmothers and great-grandmothers used to make liqueurs at home. "How extraordinary", we think, "such industrious ladies". Well, today I'm going to undo this myth: homemade liqueurs are the easiest things. There are dozens of recipes available but deep down it all comes to letting the fruit macerate in alcohol, sugar and spices.

The two pictures above have been taken with a month's difference: it's our damson liqueur the day it was prepared and today. By Christmas time we'll filter and bottle it — and drink it. Here's how we made it: half a kilo of fruit, 125 g of caster sugar, the zest of a lemon, one cinnamon stick and one bottle of vodka: all poured into a large, clean jar. Shake it every day. Wait 3 months, then strain and bottle it. The loveliest thing was that I utilised the jar my great-grandmother used to employ to prepare her own liqueurs.
