Os Meus Podcasts Preferidos :: My Favourite Podcasts

Adoro podcasts. Gosto de ouvi-los enquanto corto tecidos, arrumo a cozinha, dobro roupa, faço bolos. E, desde que tenho um iPhone, os podcasts tornaram as idas a pé para levar e buscar o Rodrigo à escola (um quilómetro para lá, outro para cá... e depois mais um para lá e outro para cá) bastante menos monótonas.

Querem saber quais são os meus podcasts preferidos?

- Woman's Hour

Um programa de rádio da BBC em que se abordam os mais variados assuntos (política, economia, literatura, culinária, cultura popular...) numa perspectiva feminina. Ultra-britânico e absolutamente imperdível... vale mesmo a pena explorar os arquivos.

- Desert Island Discs

A ideia por trás do programa (também da BBC) é ficar a saber que oito músicas uma pessoa escolheria caso ficasse desterrada numa ilha deserta. As respostas tendem a assinalar momentos importantes na vida dos entrevistados. Entre tantos outros, adorei ouvir as respostas da Emma Thompson e achei graça saber mais sobre o percurso da Cath Kidston.

- Craftsanity

Acho que este foi o primeiro podcast sobre personalidades do mundo dos crafts que ouvi. Lembro-me distintamente de ter passado um dia em Ponte de Lima (ainda em 2006?) em que ouvi podcast atrás de podcast, enquanto o Tiago estava numa convenção de cervejeiros. Mais uma vez, os arquivos são de grande interesse.

- CraftyPod

A Diane não só entrevista crafters, como fala muito de estratégias para que tem um negócio criativo. É um podcast mais curto do que o Craftsanity mas mais to the point.

- After the Jump

O programa de rádio da Grace Bonney, a fundadora do famosíssimo blog Design*Sponge. Um podcast muito indie, muito actual e muito norte-americano.

- Alternative Kitchen Garden

Quando penso neste podcast lembro-me imediatamente do nosso espaçoso mas sombrio escritório em Inglaterra e da chuva a bater na janela... fartei-me de ouvi-lo em 2010/2011, quando andava fascinada com o nosso jardim e quando ainda tinha tempo livre (ou seja, antes de o Rodrigo ter nascido). Tal como o nome deixa adivinhar, este podcast é sobre hortas alternativas. A autora é inglesa.

Também gosto muito de ver vídeos na internet, mas isso é assunto para outro post. 

E vocês, ouvem podcasts? Quais são os vossos preferidos?

I love podcasts. I enjoy listening to them while I cut fabric, tidy up the kitchen, fold clothes and bake cakes. And ever since I got an iPhone, podcasts make the trips on foot to and from Rodrigo's nursery (1 km to get there, another one to come back... and then yet another one to collect him and the last km to get home) a lot less monotonous.

Do you want to know which are my favourite podcasts?

- Woman's Hour

A BBC Radio 4 programme that offers a female perspective on the world. All matters of subjects are discussed: politics, economy, literature, cookery, popular culture... Utterly British and absolutely unmissable. The archives are really worth exploring.

- Desert Island Discs

Another BBC radio show. This one asks guests which 8 pieces of music they would take with them in the event of one day getting stuck on a desert island. The answers are so interesting because they tend to point out important moments in the interviewees' lives. Amongst others, I loved listening to Emma Thompson's choices and I enjoyed learning more about Cath Kidston's path.

- Craftsanity

I think this was the first podcast about craft personalities that I ever listened to (back in 2006?). The interviews are long and extremely detailed, which makes them super interesting — again, dig into the archives... you won't regret it.

- CraftyPod

Not only does Diane interview crafters, she also talks in-depth about writing a blog and running a creative business. It's shorter than Craftsanity and more to the point. 

- After the Jump

You know Grace Bonney, the founder of Design*Sponge? This is her radio show. Very indie, very current, very North-American.

- Alternative Kitchen Garden

When I think about this podcast I immediately remember the rain hitting the window of our spacious yet sombre study in England... I listened to all the episodes in 2010/2011, when I was fascinated by our garden and still had some free time in my hands (i.e. before Rodrigo was born). As the title says, it's a podcast about alternative kitchen gardens. The host is a very nice English girl.

I also love watching videos online but that will be the subject of another post.

Antiques in the Park :: Kedleston Hall

Voltámos à feira de antiguidades em Kedleston Hall. Vimos tudo, comprámos pouco, divertimo-nos bastante. Adoro estes mercados.

We went to the antiques fair at Kedleston Hall once again. We looked at everything, bought very little and had a great time. I love this kind of markets.

Colour in Design

No sábado fui a um workshop intitulado "Colour in Design". Orientado por Kaffe Fassett e Brandon Mably, famosos pela forma despudorada como usam as cores e os padrões, pretendia-se que as participantes saíssem das suas zonas de conforto e passassem a usar as cores sem receios nem constrangimentos. O dia girou à volta do quilt "Mexican Party", incluído no livro Quilts en Provence: cada pessoa levou tecidos para fazer a sua própria interpretação do quilt em questão e foi interessante ver as diferentes versões e ouvir os comentários dos orientadores. Não me parece que vá completar o meu quilt (na penúltima fotografia), até porque acho que os tecidos que levei não eram os mais apropriados para uma composição deste género... logo se verá.

Last Saturday I went to a workshop called "Colour in Design". Taught by Kaffe Fassett and Brandon Mably, both famous for their bold use of colour and pattern, the main purpose of the class was for people to get out of their comfort zone and start using colour without any fears or restraints. The day was centered around the quilt "Mexican Party", included in Kaffe's book Quilts en Provence: each person brought along their fabrics in order to produce their own interpretation of the quilt's design. It was very interesting to see the different versions and to hear the teachers' comments on each of them. I don't think I'll go ahead with my quilt (in the penultimate photo) because I feel the fabrics I chose weren't the most appropriate for such a design... we'll see.

Festival of Quilts 2011

Aqui ficam algumas fotografias do Festival de Quilts de Birmingham que tirei na sexta-feira passada. Fiquei impressionada com profusão de padrões, estilos e cores, tanto dos quilts em exposição como dos tecidos à venda — tantas possibilidades! No sábado foi a vez do workshop com o Kaffe Fassett e o Brandon Mably... mas isso fica para amanhã.

Here are some pictures I took last Friday at the Festival of Quilts in Birmingham. I was very impressed by the profusion of patterns, styles and colours both regarding the quilts that were being exhibited and the fabrics for sale — so many possibilities! On Saturday there was Kaffe Fasset and Brandon Mably's workshop... but I'll tell you about that tomorrow.

Lojas de Caridade II :: Charity Shops II

Muito obrigada por todos os comentários ao meu post sobre as lojas de caridade. É bom saber que não estou sozinha no meu gosto por lojas deste género. Em Portugal ia às vezes à Humana, ao Reto à Esperança, ao Emmaüs e a uma loja em Sintra mas nunca encontrei nada que se assemelhasse à realidade britânica. Uma leitora, a Paula, sugeriu que se fizesse uma lista das lojas de caridade em Portugal. Se frequentam lojas deste tipo e quiserem contribuir, mandem-me um email com a morada das lojas em questão ou deixem um comentário a este post. E agora a vencedora do sorteio: o livro de 1959 calhou à Sónia. Obrigada a todas por terem participado!

Thank you so much for all the comments in my post about charity shops. It's nice to know I'm know alone in my interest for such places. In Portugal I would sometimes go to Humana, Reto à Esperança or Emmaüs but I never came across anything that could be compared to the British reality. Paula suggested we make a list of all the charity shops in Portugal so if you know any of them, please send me an email or leave a comment below. Lojas de Caridade :: Charity Shops

Falo muito em lojas de caridade e já várias pessoas me pediram para escrever sobre o assunto. As lojas de caridade que frequento aqui em Inglaterra são espaços comerciais geridos por uma instituição de caridade (há dúzias e dúzias de obras de caridade diferentes), que vendem produtos em segunda mão e onde trabalham voluntários. São lojas em ruas normais (não pensem que se localizam em becos escondidos), onde se encontra tudo desde roupa, sapatos, livros, loiças, brinquedos, tecidos... tudo a preços baratíssimos. Algumas lojas tambem vendem móveis e outras são especializadas num só produto (as minhas preferidas são as livrarias). Vivem de doações, usufruem de muitos benefícios fiscais e todo o lucro vai para a obra de caridade a que a loja pertence. A meu ver, são instituições extraordinárias porque todas as entidades envolvidas ganham com elas. O cidadão comum tem um sítio onde deixar aquilo que já não quer ou de que já não precisa, em vez de deitar tudo para o lixo; os clientes das lojas de caridade têm acesso a uma panóplia enorme de coisas, desde roupa da estação passada até loiça com mais de 50 anos, passando por livros, discos, etc.; as obras de caridade têm rendimentos alternativos às doações em dinheiro (mais informações aqui).

I keep mentioning charity shops and several people have asked me to write about them. The charity shops I frequent here in England are retail outlets run by parent charities (there are dozens and dozens of them) that sell second-hand goods and that are staffed by volunteers. Most of them are located in the high street and there you'll find things like clothes, shoes, books, crockery, toys, fabrics... all sold very cheaply. Some shops also sell furniture and others are specialised in particular products (my favourite ones are charity bookshops). Almost all stock is donated, they get various tax concessions and the profit goes to the parent charity. As far as I'm concerned, they are quite extraordinary because everyone involved wins something. The average person has a place to leave their unwanted things instead of throwing them away; the customers have access to a myriad of things like last season's clothes, 50-year-old crockery, books, music, etc.; charities have an alternative revenue stream to money donations (more information here).

Como é óbvio, estas lojas estão repletas de tralha. Mas, se uma pessoa for atenta e persistente, consegue lá descobrir muitos tesouros. Tudo depende da paciência e dos interesses de cada um. Eu, por exemplo, quando entro nestas lojas vou directa aos livros, depois espreito as loiças e a roupa de corpo e de casa (sempre em busca de tecidos bons). Por vezes é entrada por saída, mas em certas dias posso passar horas a folhear livros (sempre arrumados por temas). Tudo o que aparece na imagem aqui em cima veio de lojas de caridade, incluindo a mesa, e é uma boa amostra daquilo que me interessa. Há quem goste de comprar roupa, chávenas de chá, puzzles, chapéus...

Of course these shops are full of junk. But there are also treasures to be found, provided that you are attentive and persistent. It all depends of one's patience and interests. Take me, for example: when I enter these shops I go straight to the bookshelves, then I take a look at the bric-à-brac section and I browse the clothes and household rails (always in search of good fabrics). Sometimes it only takes me two minutes but on certain days I can spend hours looking at books (always sorted out by themes). Everything in the picture above has come from charity shops, table included, and is a good sample of which things interest me. Some people enjoy buying clothes, teacups, puzzles, hats...

Amy Butler @ Liberty

A ida a Londres para o lançamento do livro Decorate foi cheia de surpresas. Então não é que no dia seguinte conheci a Amy Butler?

A Amy estava no Liberty a assinar livros e não poderia ser uma pessoa mais encantadora, calorosa e acessível.  Para além de uma fotografia e um autógrafo, vim para casa com esta tabela de conversões especialmente dirigida para os mercados europeu e australiano. Acho que é bastante útil, sobretudo para quem usa os moldes e livros da Amy, por isso lembrei-me de partilhá-la convosco.

My trip to London for the Decorate book launch was full of surprises. Can you believe that I met Amy Butler the following day? Amy was at Liberty signing books and she couldn't be a more charming, warm and down-to-earth person. In addition to a photo and an autograph, I came home with this conversion chart targeted to the European and Australian markets. I find it quite useful, especially for people who use Amy's patterns and books, so I thought I'd share it with you.

Stafford's Handmade Contemporary Craft Fair

Amanhã e no sábado estarei na Handmade Contemporary Craft Fair na Shire Hall Gallery, mesmo no centro de Stafford. A feira está aberta das 10h às 17h, a entrada é grátis e há mais de 20 expositores. Se estiverem na zona, não deixem de aparecer!

Tomorrow and on Saturday I'll be at the Handmade Contemporary Craft Fair at the Shire Hall Gallery, right in the centre of Stafford. The fair runs from 10 am to 5 pm, entry is free and there'll be more than 20 stalls. If you find yourself in the area do pay us a visit!

Saudade

Saudade é a palavra portuguesa por excelência. Para além do seu poético significado, penso que nos define enquanto povo. É também o nome de uma casa de chá/galeria que abriu há uns meses em Sintra e de que muito se tem falado na blogosfera. No sábado passado fomos lá; gostei tanto que voltei no domingo, desta vez com o meu pai. O espaço já foi uma fábrica de queijadas, a recuperação está impecável, o bom gosto é indiscutível, há artesanato português à venda e as exposições vão-se sucedendo. Aqui ficam algumas fotografias do espaço. Se passarem por Sintra, não deixem de lá ir!

Saudade is the Portuguese word. Its poetic meaning is very difficult to translate and I believe it really defines us as a people. It's also the name of a tea room/gallery that opened in Sintra a few months ago. We went there on Staurday and I loved it so much I returned on Sunday with my father. It used to be a sort of bakery and it's beautifully renovated; there are Portuguese handicrafts for sale and exhibitions. Here are some pictures for you. If you go to Sintra be sure not to miss it!
