Por aqui estamos todos bem, a crescer e a aproveitar os dias desta Primavera instável (um dia 20ºC, no dia a seguir 9ºC). Finalmente recebi o meu livro e não consigo descrever aquilo que senti quando peguei nele e o abri... felicidade, orgulho e algum alívio. Espero que gostem do resultado!

Gostava imenso que fossem partilhando imagens do livro e daquilo que fizerem com base nele. Publiquem as vossas fotografias na minha página no Facebook, no Pinterest e no Instagram, e usem o hashtag #livromaosaobra. Quem me dera poder estar em Portugal neste momento! 

Para a semana vou começar a mostrar os bastidores do livro — acho que tem sempre graça ver aquilo que está por trás, as histórias atrás dos projectos, os locais e até os acidentes.

Around here we're all fit and well, and we're trying to make the most of this crazy Spring (one day it'll be 20ºC and the very next day only 9ºC). I finally received a copy of my book and I can't describe what I felt when I opened the package and actually touched the book with my hands... joy, pride and a  bit of relief. I hope you'll like it!

Next week I'm going to start sharing some peaks of what went on behind the scenes — I think it's fun to get to know the stories, places and even a few accidents that occurred along the way.

Manhãs Por Aqui :: Mornings Around Here

Em todas as casas com crianças pequenas as manhãs são complicadas de gerir, e nós não somos excepção. Bem, complicadas talvez seja uma palavra demasiado forte... para usar uma expressão francesa, digamos que não são evidentes. Sair da cama, vestir, comer, brincar, gerir birras e choros em uníssono, enfrentar intempéries, enfim. Naquelas alturas em que me sinto algo esmagada, lembro-me de que poderia ser muito pior (um dos meus lemas de vida, que me ajuda a relativizar quase tudo).

Mas, no meio da correria, há sempre momentos bons. Outro lema da minha vida: tentar dar maior importância aos aspectos positivos do que aos negativos. Graças ao telemóvel, tenho conseguido registar muitos desses momentos felizes e tranquilos. Sinto-me tão, mas tão abençoada por ter estes dois rapazinhos na minha vida.

In every household with small children mornings are a juggle and we are no exception to that. Getting out of bed, getting dressed, eating, playing, managing tantrums and unison crying, facing adverse weather conditions... oh well. When I'm feeling a bit overwhelmed I keep in mind that it could be so much worse (one of my life mottos).

However, amongst all the hustle and bustle there are always good moments. Another life motto of mine: trying to focus on the positive rather than getting carried away by the negative. Thanks to my phone I've been able to record many of those happy, tranquil moments. I feel so incredibly blessed to have these two little boys in my life.

Por Aqui :: Around Here

Chuva e sol, frio e calor — típico tempo de início de Primavera. Um bebé a crescer e um rapazinho que adora cozinhar. Algumas noites mal dormidas. O jardim a acordar. Projectos de costura que avançam muito lentamente. Muitos livros, muitos puzzles e alguns desenhos animados. Bolos e scones. O Rodrigo (novamente) doente em casa e eu sem saber muito bem como gerir o dia-a-dia. Estamos todos a precisar de apanhar ar! 

PS. Tenho andado a ouvir o podcast The Longest Shortest Time e estou a gostar imenso — é sobre os primeiros tempos de maternidade (e paternidade) e acho-o inteligente e bem produzido. Recomendo-o vivamente a toda a gente com bebés pequenos em casa!

Rain and sunshine, cold and warm — typical early spring weather. A baby that keeps on growing and a little boy who loves kitchen work. A few broken nights. A garden that's showing signs of life. Sewing projects that progress very slowly. Lots of books, lots of puzzles and some cartoons. Cakes and scones. Rodrigo was sick (again) and I struggled a bit. We're all in need of some fresh air!

PS. I've been listening to The Longest Shortest Time podcast and I'm really enjoying it — it's about the early days of parenthood and I find it intelligent and well-produced. If you're a new parent, I highly recommend it!

Auto-retratos :: Self-Portraits

Não sou grande fotógrafa, mas acho que tenho um olho razoável e um dia gostava imenso de me dedicar a sério a aprender fotografia. Até lá vou-me divertindo com a máquina do Tiago e com o telemóvel. Comprei um iPhone assim que chegámos à NZ e fico contente por poder registado momentos que, de outra forma, ficariam esquecidos para sempre. 

(Por vezes dou por mim a pensar como gostaria de ter podido fazer o mesmo durante os 3 anos em Inglaterra, e até mesmo em fases anteriores: o Inter-Rail pelo sul da Europa, o Erasmus em Paris, a faculdade, as viagens com as amigas, o namoro com o Tiago, a vida de recém-casada...)

Mas voltando às fotografias tiradas com o telemóvel — há uma aplicação que me diverte especialmente: o TimerCam. Conhecem-no? Não é mais do que um temporizador, mas permite 1- tirar auto-retratos em ângulos diferentes (sem ter de estender o braço); 2- apanhar momentos inesperados (especialmente com crianças, porque nunca sabemos o que vão fazer no segundo seguinte!).

Tenho um iPhone 4 e a câmara não é nada de especial, mas vai cumprindo as suas funções. Gosto imenso destas fotografias agora e sei que, um dia mais tarde, vou adorar rever estes vislumbres da nossa vida quotidiana.

I'm not a skilled photographer but I reckon I've got a reasonable eye and one day I'd love to dive deep into the world of photography. Until then I'll keep playing with Tiago's camera and my phone. I bought an iPhone as soon as we moved to NZ and I'm glad I've been able to register moments that would have otherwise been forgotten.

(Sometimes I find myself wishing that I could have done the same during those 3 years in England and even in other phases of my life: the Inter-Rail across southern Europe, the Erasmus in Paris, the university days, the trips I took with my friends, the first years with Tiago, life as a newly-wed...)

Anyway, back to iPhone photos — I've been having lots of fun with a particular app: TimerCam. Do you use it too? It's just a timer, but it enables you to 1- take self-portraits in all sorts of angles (thus making the whole "reach-out-your-arm selfie" totally unnecessary) and 2- catch unexpected moments (this is especially true when you're photographing children, as you never know what they'll do next!).

I've got an iPhone 4 and even though the camera isn't brilliant, it performs its function. I love these pictures now and I'm sure that, in a few years time, I'll treasure these snippets of our daily life.

Plantámos três árvores de fruto. Cozinhámos e fizemos bolos. Continuei o meu quilt (426 triângulos!). O Pedro dormiu e mamou e engordou. Aproveitámos os últimos dias com a avó. E a Primavera está à porta!

We planted three fruit trees. We cooked and baked. I worked on my quilt (426 triangles!). Pedro slept and fed and put on weight. We made the most of the last days with granny. And spring is just around the corner!
