Olá 2015! :: Hello 2015!

Bom ano para todos! Que 2015 nos traga muitas aventuras e momentos cheios de alegria. Cá estão os meus rapazes com as toilettes de ano novo, que só acabei no dia 1 à noite... para a semana escrevo sobre elas. Bom fim-de-semana!

Pijamas a Condizer para Um Rapaz e o Seu Boneco :: Matching Pyjamas for a Boy and His Doll

Como todas as crianças, o Rodrigo está sempre a precisar de roupa nova. Calças de pijama valem mesmo a pena fazer em casa — casacos de pijama dão uma trabalheira e prefiro comprar-lhe t-shirts brancas de mangas compridas, mas fazer calças é rápido e barato. Mais uma vez, usei o molde Bedtime Story Pajamas da marca Oliver&S: o corte das calças é impecável, têm poucas costuras e ficam com um ar bastante profissional (acho que é o meu sétimo par).

O Rodrigo andava a pedir-me há que tempos para fazer roupa para o boneco Manel e, depois de uma série de fraldas às cores (hei-de mostrá-las aqui num dia destes), lembrei-me de lhe fazer um pijama a condizer. A Marta tinha-me mandado este link para calças e camisolas/vestidos de bonecas Waldorf e achei que seria ideal para transformar em pijama. O Manel tem 38 cm e retirei 1 cm ao comprimento das calças, bem como 1,5 cm ao molde da camisola (visto que o molde é para usar com o tecido dobrado, a camisola ficou com menos 3 cm de largura do que a original).

Nem imaginam como me diverti a fazer roupa para o boneco! Próximas peças: um par de jeans e uma camisola às riscas.

Just like every child, Rodrigo is in constant need of new clothes. Some of the things I find really worthwhile to make at home are pyjama bottoms — pj tops are too much work and I'd rather buy  him lots of long sleeve, white t-shirts, but the bottoms are quick and cheap to sew. Once again I used the Bedtime Story Pajamas pattern by Oliver + S: the cut is great, there aren't too many seams and they look quite professional (I think this is my 7th pair).

Rodrigo has been asking me to make his doll Manel some clothes and after a number of nappies in every colour of the rainbow (one day I'll show them here), I thought I'd make him matching pjs. Marta had sent me this link for Waldorf dolls trousers and tops/dresses and they were the perfect starting point for making pjs. Manuel is 38 cm so I shortened the trousers by 1 cm and took out 1,5 cm to the width of the top pattern (because the pattern is placed on the fold, the top turned out 3 cm less wide than the original one).

You can't tell you how much fun I had sewing up these doll clothes! Next on my list: a pair of jeans and a stripey top.

Oliver + S Sailboat Top

Fiz mais uma peça de roupa para o Rodrigo, desta vez uma marinière clássica. Estas camisolas às riscas são absolutamente intemporais e ficam bem a toda a gente. Usei o molde Sailboat Top da marca Oliver + S (que já tinha utilizado para fazer estes pijamas de Verão, lembram-se?), mas desta vez escolhi um tecido em malha de algodão. Cortei o tamanho 3 anos (o Rodrigo tem 2) e a camisola ficou impecável, se bem que um pouco curta... parece-me que, tal como eu, este rapaz é comprido de tronco (vou ter de começar a adaptar os moldes que escolho para ele). Fica um bretão engraçado, não fica?

I can't stop making clothes for Rodrigo — my latest piece is a classic marinière. These stripey shirts are timeless and suit absolutely everyone. I followed the Sailboat Top pattern by Oliver + S (I'd already used it to make pyjama tops, remember?) but this time I picked a cotton knit rather than a woven fabric. I cut a size 3 (Rodrigo is only 2) and the fit is great, despite being on the sort side... I'm coming to the conclusion that, just like me, this boy has a long torso (I'll have to start lengthening the patterns I use for him). He makes for a rather cute Breton, doesn't he?

Segunda Volta :: Round Two

Mais um par de Parsley Pants (que fiz com outras calças antigas do Tiago) e mais uma Easy Linen Shirt (também esta em algodão... hei-de fazer uma em linho para o Verão). Quando os moldes são bem feitos, vale a pena repetir!

Another pair of Parsley Pants (upcycled from yet another pair of Tiago's trousers) and another Easy Linen Shirt (again made in cotton... I'll sew up a linen one for summer). The beauty of well-drafted patterns is that you'll use them over and over again!

Parsley Pants

À semelhança dos gatos, estas calças têm mais do que uma vida. Começaram por ser calças do Tiago, usadas durante anos; quando começaram a ficar gastas de tantas lavagens, tingi-as de azul-escuro (a cor original) com Dylon e voltaram a ficar como novas (já experimentaram tingir na máquina de lavar roupa?). Passaram-se mais uns anos e as calças ficaram com umas nódoas impossíveis de tirar — o Tiago trabalha numa fábrica e estraga imensa roupa —, mas a parte de baixo das pernas continuava boa. Foi nessa altura que me lembrei de transformá-las numas calças para o Rodrigo.

O molde que usei chama-se Parsley Pants (sou grande fã da Rae) e é fácil e rápido de fazer, especialmente porque segui esta sugestão e aproveitei as costuras laterais e as bainhas. Por serem tão escuras, as calças foram difíceis de fotografar (esta foi a segunda tentativa), mas digo-vos que o corte é muito engraçado: o Rodrigo parece uma criança dos anos 70! Acho que também é um molde giríssimo para raparigas... hei-de experimentar fazê-las em tecidos menos clássicos.

E já estou a pensar nas calças de Inverno que vou fazer para o Rodrigo, essas sim completamente Seventies (inspiradas em fotografias do Tiago em pequeno): um par em xadrez escocês!


In the same way as cats are believed to have several lives, these trousers have already been through a few incarnations. First they were just a regular pair of chinos that Tiago wore for a few years; when they started to show their age I dyed them navy blue (their original colour) with Dylon (have you ever tried dyeing clothes in the washing machine?) and they turned out as good as new. A few years have passed since then and the trousers acquired a handful of stains that were impossible to get rid of — Tiago works in an industrial plant and he has a tendency to ruin a lot of clothes — but somehow the legs were still salvageable. And so I decided to turn them into a pair of trousers for Rodrigo.

I used the Parsley Pants pattern (I'm a big fan of Rae's) and the whole thing was sewn up so quickly and easily, especially because I followed this tip and kept the original side seams and hems. Because they are so dark they were quite hard to photograph (this was actually our second attempt) but you can take my word for it: the cut is so fun, it makes Rodrigo look like a 1970s child! I reckon it's also a great pattern for girls... especially if made in a totally different fabric.

I'm already thinking about the next pair of winter trousers I'm going to sew for Rodrigo: inspired by an old photo of Tiago as a young child, I'm going for a truly Seventies look — tartan trousers!

Sewing for Boys :: Easy Linen Shirt

Ando sempre à procura de moldes para roupa de rapaz que sejam um misto entre clássico e descontraído, e que não sejam demasiado complexos (já percebi que não tenho muita paciência para ficar horas a fazer algo que vai ser usado apenas durante uns meses). A peça mais recente que fiz para o Rodrigo foi a 'Easy Linen Shirt' do livro Sewing for Boys, e recomendo-a vivamente. 

A camisa assenta bem e, quanto a mim, só precisa de duas pequenas modificações: encurtar as mangas e aumentar um pouco o comprimento do tronco. Não há cá punhos, carcelas nem casas de botões e, mesmo assim, a camisa fica com um ar bastante decente. 

Não usei linho mas sim um algodão de óptima qualidade, perfeito para a função. Já cortei mais uma!

I'm always on the lookout for boys patterns that are both relaxed and timeless, and not too complex (I've come to the conclusion that I have limited endurance for spending hours making something that'll only be worn for a few months). I've recently made the 'Easy Linen Shirt' from the Sewing for Boys book and I can't recommend it enough.

The shirt is well drafted and, as far as I'm concerned, only needs two small alterations: the sleeves are too long and the body is too short. Other than that, it's a great pattern: I love that it looks so legit even though there are no plackets, cuffs and buttonholes to loose your mind about.

As far as fabric is concerned, I used a high-end shirting cotton instead of linen (there's no lightweight linen in my stash, unfortunately). I've already cut another one!

Passar Moldes para Tecido :: Transfering Patterns to Fabric

Quando fiz a túnica de marinheiro para o Rodrigo, utilizei um método novo — novo para mim, bem entendido — para passar os moldes para o tecido: papel químico de costura e uma recortilha. Apesar de ser um método clássico, parece-me que é pouco usado hoje em dia. A Tilly escreveu uma boa explicação aqui. Há papel químico de várias cores e tamanhos e as recortilhas encontram-se à venda em qualquer retrosaria.

When I made the sailor top for Rodrigo I used a new method — new to me, I must add — for transferring a pattern to fabric: dressmaker's carbon paper and a tracing wheel. Even though it's a classic method, I don't think it's being used much these days. Tilly has a great explanation for it here. You can find tracing wheels and carbon paper in many colours and sizes at every haberdashery shop.

Lembram-se de ter falado no facto de o decote da túnica ser demasiado aberto? Resolvi a questão com uma simples t-shirt às riscas!

By the way, remember I mention the fact that the V-neck was too deep to my liking? I've found that a simple stripey t-shirt (worn underneath the tunic) solves the problem!

Mailbox Surprise

Há uns meses fui convidada pela Marta e pela Marte para participar no Mailbox Surprise, um grupo internacional de costura cujas participantes foram desafiadas a enviar tecidos surpresa a outras participantes, e a apresentar peças de roupa infantil feitas com os tecidos recebidos. Eu recebi tecidos enviados pela Trine, directamente da Dinamarca para a Nova Zelândia. Passem no blog da Marta e vejam o que fiz com eles!

A few months ago I was invited by Marta and Marte to be a part of Mailbox Surprise, a sewing series in which a person sends a surprise gift of fabric to another person, who then has got to sew a piece of clothing for a child using that particular fabric. I received a generous package from Trine all the way from Denmark. Head over to Marta's blog and read all about my experience!

Oliver + S Sketchbook Shirt

No primeiro dia do ano, o Rodrigo estreou uma camisa feita por mim. Usei o molde Sketchbook Shirt (que me foi oferecido há uns tempos pela generosa Ana Sofia), com uma cambraia branca e botões aproveitados de uma camisa antiga do Tiago.

A camisa ficou bem feita (os moldes Oliver + S são impecáveis), se bem que ligeiramente grande — mas eu é que resolvi escolher o tamanho 3 anos para uma criança que ainda nem fez 2... Este molde tem algumas variações e eu optei por uma gola à Mao e mangas curtas (e assim evitei colarinhos pontiagudos e punhos). Mas uma coisa vos digo: isto deu uma trabalheira!! Já tinha feito planos para uma série de camisas às riscas, flores e quadrados, mas não sei se terei coragem para tal empreitada.

A propósito, o chapéu que aparece nas primeiras fotografias também é um modelo Oliver + S e está disponível gratuitamente aqui (falei sobre ele neste post).

In the first day of the year Rodrigo wore a shirt made by myself. I used the Sketchbook Shirt pattern (given to me by the generous Ana Sofia), a piece of white cotton batiste and and buttons repurposed from one of Tiago's old shirts.

The shirt turned out fine (Oliver + S patterns are impeccable), although a bit on the large side — my fault alone, as I decided to cut a size 3 for a child who hasn't even turned 2 yet... This pattern has a few variations and I went for a band collar and short sleeves (saving myself the trouble of sewing a pointy collar and cuffs). But let me tell you something: what a lot of work this turned out to be!! I had plans for a series of shirts in stripes, checks and flowers but now I'm not sure if I'll have the courage for such a task.

Bubble Shorts by DoGuincho

Conhecem a Marta do blog Do Guincho? Eu fiquei doida quando descobri o blog e vi as peças de roupa que a Marta faz para as suas duas filhas. Escrevi-lhe logo um email entusiasmado acerca do seu estilo clean mas simultaneamente cheio de pormenores. Desde então temo-nos correspondido e continuo a ir diariamente ao blog para ver as suas novas criações, as suas filhas tão giras e as produções fotográficas tão especiais. E a Marta acaba de lançar o seu primeiro molde, uns calções tufados chamados Bubble Shorts!

A Marta perguntou-me se eu queria testar o molde e claro que respondi imediatamente que sim. Fi-los para a minha sobrinha de 2 anos e escolhi tecidos muito leves e frescos para o Verão. Os calções são feitos de uma maneira bastante engenhosa, que a Marta explica muito bem nas instruções. Posso dizer-vos que adorei o processo de fazer os calções e ainda gostei mais do resultado!

Infelizmente não vi a minha sobrinha com eles vestidos porque nos desencontrámos em Portugal, mas já sei que servem. E não resisti a experimentá-los no Rodrigo (mas não fui autorizada a publicar uma fotografia, vá-se lá saber porquê...). Mais uma vez constatei que fazer roupa para raparigas é bem mais divertido do que para rapazes!

Do you know Marta from Do Guincho? I couldn't believe my eyes when I first stumbled upon her blog — all those wonderful children's clothes! I immediately wrote her an excited email about her style, so clean but full of interesting details. We've been corresponding ever since that day and I visit her blog daily to check out her new creations, her cute daughters and her witty photo shoots. And she's just released her first commercial sewing pattern: the Bubble Shorts!

Marta asked me whether I wanted to test out her pattern and naturally I said yes. I made them for my 2-year-old niece and chose light, summery fabrics. The shorts are constructed in a very clever way and Marta explains it very well in the pattern's instructions. I must say I loved the process of sewing them and I'm super happy with the results!

Unfortunately I didn't get to see my niece wearing them but I've been told they're a great fit. Of course I tried them on Rodrigo (but I'm not allowed to show you a photo... I wonder why!?). Once again I got the feeling that sewing for girls in way more fun than sewing for boys!

Praia! :: Beach!

Que bom que é ver o Rodrigo todo contente na praia, ainda por cima vestido com coisas feitas por mim! Os chapéus são do livro Little Things to Sew (já tinha feito um no ano passado) e os calções de banho foram feitos com base no molde Kid Shorts Made (à semelhança dos calções dos pijamas), com algumas alterações: para lhes dar um ar de praia, fiz duas casas de botão à frente para fazer passar um cordão e cosi um bolso atrás. Os dois primeiros foram feitos com tecidos leves de algodão; o último par foi um aproveitamento de um fato-de-banho do Tiago. Viva o Verão!

It´s wonderful to see Rodrigo at the beach looking so happy and at ease, especially when he's wearing the things I made for him. The hats are from the book Little Things to Sew (I had already made one last year) and the shorts were made using the Kid Shorts Made pattern (the same pattern I used to sew him some pyjamas) with some alterations. To give them a beach look, I sewed a couple of buttonholes in the front and added drawstrings, as well as a pocket in the back. The fabrics I used for the first two pairs of shorts are lightweight cotton lawns; for the third pair I repurposed an old pair of Tiago's swim trunks. Hurrah for summer!
