Coroa de Feijoa :: Feijoa Wreath

Lembram-se da coroa com limpa-garrafas do ano passado? Este ano escolhi ramos de feijoa em flor (aquele fruto que só descobri na Nova Zelândia.... podem ler mais sobre feijoas aqui).

No meu livro tenho explicações passo-a-passo sobre como construir uma coroa deste género — é algo  bastante simples mas com grande impacto.

O Natal está à porta e eu ainda tenho imensa coisa por fazer... e vocês? Têm tudo sob controlo?


Remember the bottle brush wreath I made last year? Well, this year I chose feijoa blossoms and leaves (feijoa is a fruit I only discovered here in NZ... you can read more about it here).

In my book I've got step by step instructions and photos on how to make a wreath like this one — it's a very simple project but one with a big impact.

Que grande ajudante que eu tive durante o processo de fazer o livro! Este pequeno photobomber foi um verdadeiro desafio... Tentei trabalhar no livro enquanto o Rodrigo estava na escola, mas houve muitas ocasiões em que precisei da ajuda do Tiago e tivemos de trabalhar ao fim-de-semana. Aproveitávamos a hora da sesta, claro, mas invariavelmente o Rodrigo acordava quando ainda estávamos a meio da sessão fotográfica e corria, comia, pisava e atacava tudo aquilo que estávamos a fotografar.

O mais difícil foi mesmo aquela temporada em Lisboa, em que não houve nem escola nem Tiago. A minha mãe ajudou-me bastante, é certo, mas os meus dias foram uma verdadeira correria. Lembro-me de um dia em que levei o Rodrigo a casa da minha mãe de manhã, fui corri três sapateiros à procura de alguém que me colocasse as molas na manta de picnic, voltei a casa da minha mãe para dar almoço ao Rodrigo e pô-lo a fazer a sesta, meti-me no carro e fui até ao Meco fotografar a dita manta, as almofadas de praia e um kaftan (que acabou por não ser incluído no livro). Na praia estava uma ventania tal que as almofadas voaram quase até ao mar — eu parecia uma tonta a a correr atrás delas e tentar fotógrafa-las em todos os ângulos possíveis e imaginários. Depois fui ao pinhal, fotografei a manta, quando me meti no carro começou a chover (uma sorte não ter chovido antes!) e guiei até Lisboa para dar banho, jantar e cama. Uf! Foram umas belas férias...

Mas agora tem muita graça ver estas fotografias. Pensando bem, o Rodrigo merece estar na capa do livro... afinal, fartou-se de participar!

What a great helper I had during the process of making the book! This tiny photobomber was a challenge indeed... I tried to work on the book during the hours that Rodrigo was at preschool but I also ended up working on weekends whenever I needed Tiago's help. We made the most of nap time but invariably Rodrigo would wake up while we were in the middle of a photoshoot and he'd start jumping, grabbing, eating and attacking everything that was at his hand's reach.

The most difficult time was those 2 months I spent in Lisbon last year, mainly because he didn't go to school and Tiago wasn't around. My mother helped me out quite a lot but my days were just so crazy. I remember one particular day when I left Rodrigo at my mother's in the morning, I went to three cobblers in search of someone who would apply some heavy-duty snaps on my picnic blanket, then went back to my mother's to feed Rodrigo his lunch and put him down for his nap and then drove to Meco (a beach 40 minutes from Lisbon) in order to photograph that same picnic blanket, the beach pillows and a kaftan (which ended up not being included in the book). It was so windy at the beach that the pillows nearly ended up in the sea — you should have seen me chasing them like a mad woman and trying to photograph them from every possible angle. Then I drove to the nearby pinewood and shot the picnic blanket. The minute I got back in the car it started raining (can you believe my luck?) and I drove back to Lisbon just in time for bath, dinner and bedtime. Uff! Talk about relaxing holidays in my hometown...

But now it's so funny to look at these pictures. Rodrigo made the cover of the book and he does deserve it... I mean, he really took part in the making of the book!

Bastidores :: Behind The Scenes

Para mim, folhear o meu livro tem significado reviver uma série de momentos. A noite em que, sentada à mesa de jantar de casa do meu pai, decidi o título. As fotografias tiradas em Inglaterra, entusiasmada com tantas descobertas ou farta de tanta chuva; as tiradas em Lisboa, cheia de calor e de pressa; e as que tirei na Nova Zelândia, ainda baralhada com uma mudança tão profunda e, mais tarde, durante o surto de produtividade que marcou as semanas que precederam a entrega do manuscrito. As dúvidas, os ensaios, as horas e horas passadas a escrever instruções. O Rodrigo e o Tiago quase sempre presentes. O entusiasmo e apoio dos meus pais e de algumas amigas em especial.

Este livro é a minha vida. Não comprei adereços especialmente para as produções, não houve sessões fotográficas em locais alugados, com modelos profissionais e um fotógrafo contratado. [Claro que um dia gostaria de experimentar tudo isso, não me interpretem mal.] Este livro foi feito com a prata de casa. De várias casas, aliás: a nossa casa em Inglaterra e agora a casa na Nova Zelândia, a casa da minha mãe, do meu pai e a verdadeira caverna de Ali Babá que é a casa dos meus avós. Modelos? Sou eu (em fotografias tiradas ao longo dos últimos anos), o Rodrigo (que nunca pensei que fosse incluído no livro), a Diana (que esteve cá em casa durante a recta final) e as mãos da minha mãe e da minha amiga Gracinha. Fotógrafo? O Tiago e eu, umas vezes em equipa (em que eu fazia o mise en place e o Tiago tirava a fotografia) e outras vezes só eu (fartei-me de trabalhar durante aqueles 2 meses que passei em Lisboa no ano passado).

Espero que o livro vos inspire a deitar mãos à obra!

As I flip through my book I find my self experiencing again a number of moments. The evening when, sitting at my father's dining table, I came up with the title. The photos taken in England, when I was feeling so invigorated by so many discoveries or whilst being fed up with so much rain. The ones I took in Lisbon, rushing everywhere and always battling with the heat. And the pictures taken in New Zealand, during that first year when I felt so overwhelmed by such a dramatic change and later on, during those weeks prior to my big deadline. The doubts, the trials, the hours upon hours of writing instructions. Rodrigo and Tiago almost always present. The excitement and support of my parents and some friends in particular.

This book is my life. I didn't buy any props especially for the book nor did I have the luxury of a photo shoot in a wonderful location with professional models and a fancy photographer. [Don't get me wrong: one day I'd love to experience all that!] This book was made with whatever I had at hand in my home. Actually, in several homes: the one in England, this one in New Zealand, my mother's, father's and grandparents' (the latter being a true Ali Baba's cave). Models? Myself (in pictures taken over the years), Rodrigo (who I never thought would be included in the book), Diana (who was here during that final stage) and the hands of my mother and of my friend Gracinha. Photographer? Tiago and me, sometimes working as a team (I'd set everything up and then he'd shoot it), other times me working by myself (I worked really hard during those 2 months I spent in Lisbon last year).

Mãos à Obra!

"Este livro é sobre criatividade, gratificação e independência. 

Sobre saberes antigos adaptados à vida presente. 

Sobre descoberta e imaginação. 

Este livro é sobre coisas feitas à mão."

É assim que começa "Mãos à Obra!", o meu livro com a Marcador, que vai ser lançado amanhã em Portugal. Escrevo estas palavras com um aperto no estômago — sinto uma enorme alegria mas também uma boa dose de nervosismo. Um livro! Escrevi um livro!

Fui desafiada a escrevê-lo há dois anos e trabalhei nele com muito entusiasmo e afinco. Tentei ser criativa nos projectos, perfeita nos acabamentos e rigorosa nas explicações. A Marcador fez um excelente trabalho de design, paginação e revisão (escrevi o livro "à antiga" mas os textos foram todos revistos conforme o novo acordo ortográfico). As fotografias foram tiradas pelo Tiago e por mim em três países diferentes. Quando assinei o contrato, o Rodrigo era um bebé de colo e ei-lo agora, um rapazinho com quase 3 anos! Escrevi e fotografei parte do livro já com o Pedro na minha barriga, e revi provas nos intervalos das sestas. 

O blog foi o ponto de partida, mas o livro é muito mais do que o blog. Tem quase 50 projectos de costura, culinária, jardinagem e decoração e o tema subjacente é a casa. No capítulo introdutório fiz um apanhado das minhas opiniões e convicções a respeito deste estilo de vida que escolhi e estabeleci as bases para as diferentes matérias do livro. Há muito tempo que não escrevia tão intensamente — foi uma oportunidade óptima para repensar as minhas escolhas e tentar transmitir-vos aquilo em que acredito.

O livro está dividido em quatro partes: Primavera, Verão, Outono e Inverno. Já sabem que sou grande adepta de tirar o maior partido das estações do ano e fazer o possível por torná-las especiais. Ao tornar os nossos dias especiais, estamos a tornar a nossa vida especial. Não pretendo que nos tornemos todas meninas prendadas — longe disso! —; o meu objectivo é descomplicar estes assuntos e ajudar a desfazer o mito de que a criatividade é uma qualidade inata, que é concedida apenas a algumas pessoas.  

Quantas vezes ouvimos dizer "não tenho jeito de mãos" ou "não tenho imaginação"? Isso para mim não faz sentido. Nós somos capazes de tudo, desde que tenhamos muita curiosidade, bastante vontade, alguma paciência e um certo empenho. O importante é não ter medo de dar o primeiro passo.

Espero sinceramente que gostem do resultado. Ao longo deste processo tive sempre os leitores do blog muito presentes na minha cabeça. Se escrevi um livro, foi graças a vocês. E, por isso, o livro acaba assim:

"E a todos os leitores do meu blog, pelo interesse e entusiasmo com que têm vindo a acompanhar as minhas aventuras pelo mundo."

These are the first lines of "Mãos à Obra!" , my book with Marcador, which will be out tomorrow in Portugal. I'm writing these words with butterflies in my stomach — I feel tremendous joy but also a fair amount of nervousness. A book! I've written a book!

I was invited to write it two years ago and I worked on it long and hard, and with great enthusiasm. I  did my best to come up with creative projects, neat workmanship and clear instructions. The publisher did a great job in terms of design and edits. The photos were taken both by Tiago and myself, in three different countries. When I signed the contract Rodrigo was just a baby and look at him now, a little boy who's almost 3! I wrote and photographed the final part of the book with Pedro already inside me and  proofread it in between nap times.

This blog was the starting point for the book but the book is so much more than just the blog. The almost 50 projects cover topics like sewing, baking, preserving, gardening, flower arranging and decorating and they all revolve around the idea of home life. The first chapter lays the foundation for the various themes and I delve deep into my choices and opinions on the subject of home living, appreciating the simple things in life and, of course, making things by hand. I had not written in such an intensive way in a long time and it was a great opportunity for me to rethink my beliefs and share my thoughts with you.

The book is laid out in four main sections: spring, summer, autumn and winter. You already now I am passionate about making the most of what's in season and trying to make them feel special. By making our days special we are making our lives special. My aim isn't to make women feel like they've got to become "accomplished ladies" — on the contrary, my goal with this book is to uncomplicate these subjects and to help dispel the myth that creativity is an innate skill that only graces certain people.

How many times have we heard things like "I'm not good with my hands" and "I have no imagination"? To me, that's nonsense. We can make everything we set our hearts into as long as we have lots of curiosity, a strong will, a bit of patience and a fair amount of commitment. What's important is to not being afraid of taking the first step.

I sincerely hope you'll enjoy this book. Throughout this process I've always had my blog readers in mind. If I've written a book it's because of you. And so the last sentence of the book is:

"To all my blog readers, for following my adventures around the world with so much interest and enthusiasm."

What's the book about?

Without wanting to spoil the surprise, I can tell you that the book follows the main themes of my blog. It's a project book and it revolves around fabrics, flowers, baking and preserving, home decorating and also a bit of gardening.

Where can you buy a copy?

The book will be for sale at most bookshops and big supermarkets in Portugal. You'll also be able to buy it online at websites like wook.pt, fnac.pt, presenca.pt, bertrand.pt, etc.

Will the book be published in other countries/languages?
I have no idea at this point... if later on it happens to be picked up by a foreign publisher, then yes!

If you don't live in Portugal but still want to buy a copy, how can you do so?

Both Wook and Fnac will ship internationally.

Will I be in Portugal for the book launch?

Unfortunately not... We're not sure when we'll travel to Portugal again, maybe next year. It's such a shame because it would be a fun opportunity for a meet-up with blog readers. I'll try to make up for it online!

Tenho uma grande notícia para partilhar convosco!

Há dois anos fui desafiada a escrever um livro pelo editor da Marcador. Lembro-me da primeira conversa que tivemos via Skype: o João em Barcarena e eu em Staffordshire, com o Rodrigo bebé ao meu colo. Após tantos meses de trabalho intenso, o livro está quase a sair — está previsto para o fim do mês de Outubro! Escrevo neste blog há 8 anos e ter tido a oportunidade de publicar um livro é indescritível... estou mesmo contente.

Mal posso esperar por tê-lo nas minhas mãos e estou cheia de vontade de vos contar como foi o processo de escrever e fotografar tantos projectos novos. O livro vai estar à venda em todo o país e espero sinceramente que gostem do resultado!


I've got big news to share with you!

Two years ago I was invited by the editor of Marcador to write a book. I remember the first time we talked on Skype: João was in Portugal and I was in Staffordshire, sitting at my desk with baby Rodrigo on my lap. After so many months of intense work, the book is almost finished — it'll be out later this month! I've been writing this blog for 8 years and I can't tell you how happy I am to have had the chance to write a book.

I can't wait to actually touch it with my own hands and I want to tell you how the process of writing and photographing so many new projects went. The book will be in Portuguese and will be for sale all over Portugal... I really hope you'll like it!
