Nemo

Recentemente fiz algo completamente novo e diferente: a minha interpretação de um desenho animado. Em causa estava o Nemo, personagem principal do filme de 2003 da Pixar, e uma amiga que tem uma ligação especial a ele. Procurei inspiração e instruções na internet mas nada encontrei — então fiz um desenho tosco de um peixe-palhaço e, com feltro, enchimento e dois botões, fiz o Nemo que podem ver nas fotografias. Se o voltar a fazer, terei de corrigir as barbatanas: é que o Nemo tem uma mais pequena do que a outra...

Recently I made something totally new and different: my own interpretation of an animated individual. In question was Nemo, the main character in Pixar's 2003 film, and a friend of mine who's got a special connection to him. I looked for inspiration and tutorials online but found nothing — so I made a rough drawing of a clownfish and using felt, toy stuffing and two buttons, sewed the Nemo you can see in the pictures. If I ever make it again, I'll have to adjust the fins: the thing that makes Nemo unique is that his right fin is much smaller than his left fin...

Viva o Inverno :: Enjoy Winter

Estou de volta às lides cibernéticas, não sem antes ter passado ao Tiago a maldita virose que me atacou sem piedade (coitado... mas já está quase bom). Muito obrigada por tantos comentários - nunca pensei que a expressão "não me tenho sentido muito bem" desse origem a tanta simpatia! É bom saber que gostam de acompanhar este blog e que se interessam pelo meu bem-estar. Entretanto fiz 29 anos, passei uns dias na Cornualha e fui buscar a minha mãe ao aeroporto. E agora, toca a trabalhar!

I'm back in cyberspace, but not before having successfully infected Tiago with my illness (poor him... he's much better now). Thank you so much for all your comments - I never thought the mere expression "I haven't been feeling very well" would generate so much sympathy from you! It's nice to know that you enjoy reading this blog and care about my well-being. Meanwhile, I turned 29, spent a few days in Cornwall and picked up my mother from the airport. And now: back to work!

Regresso às Aulas :: Back to School

Já é tarde para falar em regresso às aulas, mas esta encomenda é isso mesmo: um estojo e uma bolsa de computador para uma professora de português que gosta de bordados. Sandra, espero que gostes!

It's too late now to talk about going back to school but actually that's what this custom order is all about: a pencil case and a laptop cover for a Portuguese teacher who loves needlework. Sandra, I hope you like them!

Coccon Laptop Cover

Há que tempos que andava com vontade de fazer uma pasta para o computador. Gosto de andar com tudo dentro de um só saco - daí usar malas grandes no dia-a-dia e deixar as clutches para idas ao cinema, saídas à noite e outras ocasiões do género - e precisava de algo que protegesse o computador dos riscos e possíveis quedas. Mal vi o novo molde da Florence, comprei-o e fi-lo logo no dia seguinte.

I've been meaning to make a laptop cover for a long time. I like carrying all my belongings in just one bag - for that reason, I tend to favour large bags during the day and leave the clutches for going out at night - and needed something that would protect my laptop from scratches and possible bumps. As soon as I saw Florence's new pattern I knew I had to give it a try, and I managed to complete it the very next day.

Riscas Engenhosas :: Clever Stripes

Numas arrumações de lãs e afins em casa da minha avó, a minha mãe e eu encontrámos, entre dezenas de novelos, uma colcha em crochet por terminar e a revista - uma Maison et Travaux de Setembro de 1975 - com as respectivas instruções.

A colcha é composta de triângulos com riscas pararelas, e a maneira de os conjugar é bastante engenhosa: rodando-os em determinadas direcções, conseguem-se obter jogos de quadrados com um efeito bastante interessante. 

Como nem a minha mãe nem eu gostamos especialmente de crochet, pensámos que se poderia obter o mesmo resultado com um tecido às riscas. O mérito é todo da minha mãe, que cortou, coseu e acertou as riscas de forma perfeita; eu limitei-me a transfomar o quadrado final numa almofada. Aqui ficam as instruções para quem quiser experimentar fazer algo no género.

A while ago, my mother and I were tidying up my grandmother's sewing room when, amongst many skeins of yarn, we found an unfinished crochet throw, along with a magazine - a copy of Mode et Travaux from September 1975 - containing the pattern. 

The trow is made of triangles featuring parallel stripes. The way of combining the triangles is quite clever: by rotating them in certain directions, one ends up with very interesting sets of squares.

Since both my mother and I prefer sewing to crochet, we thought that we could get a similar effect by using striped fabric. My mother did all the work of cutting, sewing and perfectly aligning the stripes and I just transformed the top into a cushion. Here are the instructions in case you want to give it a try.

A Loo with no View

Quem me dera poder fazer cortinas assim para a casa toda: duas costuras, um esticador, camarões e já está. Fácil, barato, rápido. Infelizmente, cortinas deste género só dão para as casas de banho e para este tipo de janelas que abrem em cima e para o exterior...

I wish I could make curtains like this one for the the whole house: two seams, an elastic rod, some eye hooks and that's it. Easy, cheap, quick. Unfortunately, such curtains are only good for bathrooms and for this particular type of windows that open on top and towards the outside...

O pano foi tecido à mão, há muitos anos, algures na Europa central e comprei-o aqui. É mais escuro do que estava à espera, mas não faz mal porque combina com a alcatifa. (!) 

The cloth was hand-woven many years ago, somewhere in central Europe, and I bought it here. It's darker than expected but that's all right because it matches the carpet. (!)

O quadro não passa de uma página que arranquei de uma revista de 1953, o ano da coroação da presente rainha, revista essa que comprei num car boot sale só por causa dos anúncios.

The picture on the wall is just a page torn from a 1953 magazine (Coronation year) that I bought at a car boot sale just because of all the ads in it.

Laranja e Turquesa :: Orange and Turquoise (made by Mum)

Hoje vou mostrar-vos dois quilts que a minha mãe fez no Verão, para serem usados ao fim da tarde, no jardim, depois de um dia na praia. O primeiro foi inspirado neste quilt e feito sem recurso a quaisquer instruções. Tem 1,14 x 1,52 m e os tecidos são japoneses, americanos e franceses.

Today I'm going to show you two quilts my mum made this past Summer. They're meant to be used in late afternoons, in the garden, after a day well spent at the beach. The first quilt was inspired on this one and made without any directions. It measures 1,14 x 1,52 and the fabrics are Japanese, American and French.

O segundo quilt é feito com base no modelo disappearing 9 patch e mede  1,20 x 1,60. Os tecidos são americanos e franceses.

Scrappy Carrier Bag Store (Grocery Bag Dispenser) Tutorial

October is scrap busters month at Sew, Mama, Sew: what a brilliant idea! People who sew tend to gather piles and piles of scraps... we are reluctant to throw away even the tiniest bit of our lovely fabrics, right? Well, it's time to put them into use!

Today I'm going to try to show you how to make a scrappy carrier bag store (or, if you prefer, a grocery bag dispenser). Even though we're all trying to reduce our use of plastic carrier bags, some of them manage to end up inside a dawer or under the sink... So I suggest we start storing them in a neat, handy way!

Materials

- fabric scraps in matching/contrasting colours

- rectangle of matching/contrasting fabric for loop (for hanging) (50 x 6 cm)

- square of muslin (approx. 45 x 45 cm)

- braided elastic, 1 cm wide  (cut 2 lenghts of 15 cm)

- tailor's chalk

- rotary cutter

- clear plastic ruler

- self-healing mat

- pins

- all-purpose thread

- sewing machine

1. Select your fabric scraps. The goal is to end up with a 45 x 45 cm (approx.!) square of pieced fabric. I decided I'd construct 4 strips, each of them approx. 12 cm wide. So I cut my scraps into rectangles that were 12 cm long (all of different widths).

2. Piece scraps rather randomly. Aim for a total length of 45 cm (minimum), but don't worry if it gets a little longer, as you'll trim it later. Press.

3. Square it up. Repeat the piecing, pressing and squaring up 3 times. You'll end up with 4 pieced rectangles, each of them measuring approx. 45 x 12 cm.

4. Arrange the strips in a pleasing way and sew them together. Press.

5. Square it up. This is the carrier bag store's outer fabric.

6. Place the pieced fabric on top of your muslin and cut along the sides. You'll get a piece of muslin that has the exact same mesurements as the pieced fabric. The muslin is the inside (lining) of the carrier bag store.

7. Pin in place.

8. Trace lines for quilting with tailor's chalk. I traced mine 2,5 cm apart.

9. Quilt it.

10. Zig-zag all around the rectangle.

11. Get one lenght of elastic. Fold and press one raw edge (wrong sides together), approx. 1,7 cm.

12. Sew in 0,5 cm from raw edge.

13. Attach a safety pin to one end of elastic and insert it into the tube you just made. Stitch the other end of elastic (the one that has no safety pin) to the end of the tube. This will prevent the elastic from "escaping".

14. Push and pull the elastic through. Distribute the fabric equally throughout the elastic. Get rid of the safety pin and stitch the other end of the tube, making sure you enclose the elastic. Repeat with the other raw end.

15. Turn the pieced sides together (lining facing up), pin in place and sew. Turn it inside out.

16. Take the 50 x 6 cm rectangle for loop, sew right sides together (along the lenght)and turn it inside out. Press. Now pin the loop in place and sew. Stuff the top with those nasty plastic bags and pull them out of the bottom. You're done!

Calmamente vou fazendo mais baldes de/para retalhos; ontem à noite acabei o amarelo/cor-de-laranja. A propósito, já sabem que Outubro é o mês dos retalhos no Sew, Mama, Sew? Toca a participar!

Retalhos :: Scraps

Setembro é o mês de pôr a casa em ordem para depois (re)começar a trabalhar (já estou a pensar no Natal!). Os retalhos que tenho vindo a acumular pedem uma arrumação sistemática; caso contrário, torna-se quase impossível utilizá-los. Vou arrumá-los por cores, em baldes de tecido feitos dos próprios retalhos. O molde dos baldes é da Maya e pode comprar-se aqui. Provavelmente teria conseguido criar um molde meu, mas gosto da ideia de apoiar os meus fellow crafters, tal como gosto que, comprando as coisas que faço, apoiem o meu trabalho. A propósito, há uns dias li este excelente texto sobre o assunto.

September is the ideal month for tidying up the flat so I can go back to work (I'm already thinking about Christmas!). I've been accumulating scraps and they're screaming for some kind of systematic organisation; otherwise, they are impossible to use. I'm going to sort and store them by colours in fabric buckets made out of scraps. This bucket pattern is by Maya and you can buy it here. I could probably have made my own pattern for it but I like the idea of supporting my fellow crafters, just the way I like it when people buy my things and support my work. By the way, some days ago I read this excellent post on the subject.

Ah, que bem que sabe acabar uma encomenda a tempo e horas. Mesmo que a corrida contra-relógio signifique acordar às 9h da manhã no Sábado de Aleluia...
