Shop Update :: Quilt Kits

Lembram-se dos quilt kits? É com grande alegria que vos digo que ontem actualizei a loja com mais de 20. De tudo aquilo que já vendi, os quilts kits são, de longe, o meu produto preferido (não contando com o livro, claro). Gosto de conjugar os tecidos, cortá-los, empacotá-los, ler os emails de quem os comprou, ver a execução e o produto final (1, 2, 3, 4). Gosto de pensar nos bebés que os irão usar e nas pessoas que, ao fazerem os quilts, ganharam confiança nos seus dotes de costura.

No fundo, tento fazer com os quilt kits o mesmo que tentei alcançar com o meu livro: encorajar quem se quer aventurar neste mundo do "feito à mão". Descomplicar. Ajudar. Partilhar.

Remember my quilt kits? I'm happy to tell you that yesterday I put up more than 20 kits for sale in my Etsy shop. Out of everything I've ever sold, the quilt kits remain my favourite product (apart from my book, of course). I love combining the fabrics, cutting them, putting together the package, reading the emails from the people who've bought them, watching their progress and the end result (1, 2, 3, 4). I like thinking about the babies who will get to use the quilts and I enjoy knowing that the people who've made them have gained confidence in their sewing skills.

Basically, what I'm trying to do with these quilt kits is the same as I tried to convey in my book: encourage whoever wants to venture into this world of handmade. Uncomplicate. Help. Share.

Acertar Triangles :: Trimming Triangles

Há quatro meses comecei a fazer um quilt de triângulos rectângulos.

Aproveitei quadrados que me sobraram dos quilt kits. Juntei-os dois a dois (direito com direito), tracei a diagonal e cosi duas linhas paralelas, ambas a 1/4 de polegada da dita diagonal. Cortei-os ao meio pela diagonal, engomei-os e fiquei com mais de 400 triângulos rectângulos.

E depois li numa série de blogs que tinha de acertar os ditos triângulos. E a minha mãe confirmou. É verdade que eles ficaram um bocado distorcidos depois de terem sido cosidos e engomados (tem a ver com o facto de as costuras serem cosidas no viés nos tecidos).

Mas esta história de acertá-los está a demorar taaanto tempo. Estou aborrecida. E algo desencorajada.

Enfim. Vou respirar fundo e acertar mais uns triângulos. Vai valer a pena! 

Four months ago I started making a half-square triangle quilt.

I took the leftover squares from my quilt kits, paired them right sides together, traced the diagonal and stitched two parallel lines, each 1/4'' from that diagonal. I cut them in half following the diagonal, pressed them and ended up with over 400 half-square triangles.

And then I read on several blogs that I should square up those triangles. And my mother confirmed it. It's true that they end up a bit crooked after all that sewing and pressing (it has to do with the fact that the fabrics are sewed on the bias).

But this trimming business is taking so looong. I'm feeling bored. And a bit discouraged.

Oh well. I'll just take a deep breath and trim some more. It'll be worth it in the end!

Grão a Grão :: Little by Little

Ter um blog "criativo" (chamemos-lhe assim, mesmo correndo o risco de parecer pedante) é um pau de dois bicos: por um lado, funciona como estímulo à criatividade e como poderosa ferramenta de automotivação; por outro, há sempre aquela pressão de mostrar trabalho feito e avançar para o próximo projecto. 

Mas fazer à mão é mais do que produzir: é fazer as coisas com calma e alguma ponderação e saborear o processo. Nem tudo tem de ser imediato — nem pode ser, porque fazer à mão leva tempo. Muito tempo. 

Na antevéspera de o Pedro nascer comecei a fazer um quilt para mim. Peguei nas sobras dos quilt kits*, seleccionei as cores e os padrões mais frescos e femininos e avancei para um quilt de triângulos. Vai ter o tamanho de uma cama de solteiro, para que possa mais tarde servir como colcha, manta, tenda, tapete de picnic... A ideia de fazer um quilt com um recém-nascido cá em casa poderá parecer completamente louca (se as coisas feitas à mão levam muito tempo, os quilts então podem demorar uma eternidade) mas tudo depende do estado de espírito com que se aborda o projecto em questão. Este quilt é para se ir fazendo, dez minutos aqui, quinze ali, durante uma sesta, um tempo morto. 

E um dia vou olhar para este quilt e pensar "fi-lo quando o Pedro era bebé".

* por falar em quilt kits, tenho uma série de kits cortados e à espera de serem fotografados... daqui a uns tempos estarão à venda na loja.


Writing a "creative" blog (let's call it that, even if it sounds a bit pedantic) is somewhat two-sided: on the one hand, it stimulates the author's creativity and acts as a powerful self-motivating tool; on the other hand, however, there's always that pressure to show off finished work and move on to the next project. 

But making by hand is much more than simply producing things: you're supposed not to rush it and enjoy the process. Not everything has to be immediate — I mean, making by hand usually takes time. A long time.

Two days before Pedro was born I started making a quilt for myself. I took the remnants from my quilt kits*, selected the freshest, most feminine prints and set about making a half-square triangle quilt. I've decided to make it for a single bed so that later on it can be used as a bedspread, lap quilt, tent or even as a picnic blanket. The idea of making a quilt with a newborn at home may seem crazy (if things made by hand take a long time, then quilts can take up an eternity) but it all boils down to how one approaches the project. This quilt is meant to be worked on slowly, ten minutes here, fifteen minutes there, during nap time, etc.

One day I'll look at it and think "I made this quilt when Pedro was a baby".

* since I mentioned quilt kits, let me just say I've got lots of them all cut and assembled and waiting to be photographed... I'm hoping to put them up for sale soon.

I Spy Quilt

O Rodrigo anda doido com o novo quilt que a minha mãe fez para ele. É um "I Spy Quilt", um quilt cheio de tecidos com animais, carros e outras bonecadas que tais. Para além de servir como manta e tapete de brincadeiras, é um verdadeiro jogo de palavras, sons, cores e números. 

Por falar em quilts feitos pela minha mãe, agora podem encontrá-los à venda na nova loja da Dot Quilts em Lisboa. Fica na Estrada de Benfica, junto ao Fonte Nova, e os quilts da minha mãe estão na montra! 

PS. Outra coisa com que o Rodrigo anda obcecado é com a praia... já repararam na toilette dele? Anda constantemente a trocar as calças de Inverno pelos calções de banho e a preparar sacos cheios de brinquedos para a "paia"... coitado, ainda vai ter de esperar uns meses!

Rodrigo is completely smitten with the new quilt my mother made for him. It's an "I Spy Quilt", a quilt entirely made of fussy-cut prints of animals, cars and other novelty prints. In addition to being a great blanket or play mat, this quilt lends itself to lots of fun learning activities: words, sounds, colours and numbers.

And speaking of quilts made by my mother, you can now find a selection of them for sale in the new Dot Quilts shop in Lisbon!

PS. Another thing that Rodrigo is currently obsessing about is the beach... did you notice his outfit? He's always changing into his beach shorts and preparing bags filled of beach toys... poor little man, he'll have to wait a few months for his wishes to come true!

Quilts in "Little Women"

Uma das razões pelas quais eu adoro ver filmes e séries históricas tem a ver com os espaços (interiores e exteriores), o guarda-roupa e a fotografia. Estas produções são normalmente feitas com grande rigor e detalhe, e para mim são extremamente inspiradoras. A BBC é imparável neste campo mas há dezenas de outros filmes e séries que não lhes ficam atrás.

No filme "Mulherzinhas", por exemplo, aparecem uns quantos quilts que me fazem sempre carregar no botão pausa para olhar melhor para eles. Da última vez que o vi tirei umas quantas fotografias com o telemóvel para partilhar aqui convosco — não estão nada de especial, mas dá para ter uma ideia dos quilts americanos na altura da Guerra Civil.

Um dia hei-de fazer aqui uma lista das minhas produções preferidas neste aspecto. E vocês, que séries e filmes vêem e revêem só por causa daquilo que aparece em segundo plano?

One of the reasons why I love watching period series and films has to do with the locations (both indoors and outdoors), wardrobe and photography. These productions are usually put together with great accuracy and attention to detail and I find them highly inspiring. The BBC is a master in this field but there are also dozens of other films and TV series that are equally good.

In the film "Little Women", for instance, there's a number of quilts that always have me press the pause button so I can have a better look at them. The last time I watched it I actually took some photos with my phone in order to share them here with you — the quality isn't great but they give us an idea of the type of quilts that existed in America in the Civil War era.

One of these days I must show you my list of films and series I watch mainly because of this kind of things. What about you, what do you watch over and over again just because of what you can glimpse in the background?

Pendurar um Quilt na Parede :: Hanging a Quilt on the Wall

Há muitas maneiras de pendurar um quilt na parede — hoje vou falar-vos da forma como nós colocámos o quilt mapa-mundi no quarto do Rodrigo. Não gosto especialmente de ver varões a sair dos lados dos quilts, por isso o que fiz foi:

1. Fazer um tubo de tecido ligeiramente mais curto do que a largura do quilt e cosê-lo à mão na parte de trás do quilt;

2. Cortar um daqueles paus de madeira que há à venda nas lojas de bricolage com o mesmo comprimento do que o tubo de tecido (ok, esta parte de cortar coube ao Tiago);

3. Fazer dois cortes no dito tubo de tecido (o Tiago, autor desta engenhosa ideia dos cortes, sugeriu que eu fizesse duas bonitas casas de botões, mas fui preguiçosa e limitei-me a cortar o tecido com uma tesoura);

4. Enroscar dois camarões grandes na parede (alinhados com os tais cortes) — os cortes estão lá para que o pau de madeira possa entrar nos camarões.

Isto assim descrito parece um bocado confuso, mas as fotografias ajudam a perceber o esquema.

PS. Deram pelo soupçon de barra de papel de parede na última fotografia? Daí para cima a parede é branca (amarelada). Um dia será toda ela alva... (este tom de verde podia ser pior, é certo, e nem me choca assim tanto, mas é extremamente cansativo)

There are many ways to hang a quilt on a wall — today I'm going to talk to you about how we hung the world map quilt on Rodrigo's bedroom. I don't particularly like it when you can see the rod sticking out at the sides of the quilt so here's what we did:

1. Sew up a fabric tube slightly shorter than the quilt's width and hand-stitch it to the back of the quilt;

2. Buy one of those wooden dowels that are sold at DIY stores and cut it to match the length of the fabric tube (ok, Tiago performed the cutting bit);

3. Make two slashes on the fabric tube (Tiago, the author of this ingenious solution, suggested I made two beautiful buttonholes but I was lazy and just cut them with a pair of scissors);

4. Screw two hooks on the wall, making sure they are aligned with those slashes — the slashes are there so that the dowel can get inside the hooks.

I realise that I'm not explaining this very well but hopefully the pictures will make it easier for you to understand our scheme.

PS. Did you notice that soupçon of wallpaper border in the last picture? After that the wall is cream right up to the ceiling. I'm hoping to paint everything white in the near future (I know this green could be a lot worse but it does get a bit wearing after some time).

Quilt Mapa-Mundi :: World Map Quilt

Nacionalidade portuguesa, naturalidade britânica, residência na Nova Zelândia... é natural que a geografia seja o tema dominante no quarto do Rodrigo. Lembram-se do pouf? E do armário? 

Há uns tempos a minha mãe fez um quilt mapa-mundi e eu pensei logo que seria ideal para pendurar na parede do quarto dele. É alegre, colorido, didáctico e mole — mole? É que, estando agora a viver num país em que há tantos tremores de terra, não me arrisco a pendurar quadros por cima das camas...

Portuguese nationality, the UK as place of birth and currently living in New Zealand... it's only natural that geography is the main theme in Rodrigo's room. Remember the beanbag? And the wardrobe?

As soon as I saw the world map quilt my mother made for him I thought it would look great hanging on a wall in his room. Not only is it bright and cheerful, it's also didactic and soft — soft? Yes! Given the fact that we're now living in a country very prone to earthquakes, I have to be careful with what I hang over the beds...

Fat Quarters

O mundo do quilting tem umas invenções engraçadas e uma delas é o fat quarter. O que é ao certo um fat quarter? É um quarto de jarda, cortada como se o tecido tivesse sido dobrado em quatro (ver imagem acima), que tipicamente mede 18" x 22" (aproximadamente 45 x 55 cm). Este video mostra exactamente como se cortam os fat quarters. No fundo, são uns rectângulos muito apetitosos que permitem ter um bocado de um tecido de que se gosta sem ter de se comprar uma grande quantidade.

Um conjunto de fat quarters é o presente ideal para uma crafter. Os fat quarters têm mil e uma utilizações — aqui estão algumas das minhas ideias preferidas:

The quilting world has produced some wonderful inventions, one of them being the fat quarter. What's a fat quarter? It's a quarter of a yard that's been cut as if the fabric had been folded in four (see picture above). It typically measures 18" x 22" (approx. 45 x 55 cm). This video shows you exactly how fat quarters are cut. They're nice little rectangles that allow you to buy a piece of fabric that you like without having to spend too much money on yardage.

A fat quarter bundle is the perfect present for crafters. There are dozens and dozens of ways to use fat quarters — here are a few of my favourites:

1- Fabric Scrap Basket (2 FQs)
2- Reversible Child's Apron (3 FQs)
3- Ric Rac Clutch (3 FQs)
4- Cosmetic Bag (2 FQs)

Hoje à noite terei alguns conjuntos de fat quarters na minha loja. Aproveito para avisar que a loja fecha no sábado e só reabrirá daqui a uns meses. Finalmente recebemos os vistos para a Nova Zelândia e partimos já no início de Dezembro!
