Shabby Chic

Voltei a tropeçar numa referência ao Saídos da Concha, desta vez a propósito de mobília pintada e do estilo shabby chic. Achei graça ao Shabby Chic Furniture porque, mesmo antes de ter tomado contacto com o livro da Rachel Ashwell, já imaginava novos usos para objectos antigos e sofria da obsessão por móveis pintados de branco... Acho que por mais horroroso que um móvel seja em castanho, o branco tem o condão de o transformar completamente, suavizando as linhas e proporcionando-lhe leveza. Obrigada Shabby Chic Furniture!

I've come across another reference to Saídos da Concha, this time regarding painted furniture and shabby chic style. I like Shabby Chic Furniture because even before I knew Rachel Ashwell's book I used to imagine new uses for old objects and already had an obsession about white painted wooden furniture... I belive that no matter how ugly a piece of brown furniture is, white is always able to completely transform it, smoothing the lines and adding lightness. Thank you Shabby Chic Furniture!

Meanwhile, I made a cushion for our living room using some squares from a Moda charm pack and I quilted it, which was something entirely new to me!

Hoje fomos a outro baptizado. Peguei em duas camisolas feltradas e fiz estas pequenas criaturas para oferecer ao bebé.

Today we went to another child's christening. I used two felted sweaters and I made these little creatures.

Entrada / Entryway

Inspirada pelos wallpockets que a Sally Shim faz, resolvi fazer um para a nossa entrada. Precisava de um sítio onde pôr as cartas por abrir e algumas folhas de papel, e acho que isto não se poderia adequar mais à nossa falta de espaço.

Inspired by the great wallpockets Sally Shim makes, I decided to make one for our entryway. I needed a place where to put unopened letters and some paper and I think this is the best solution considering our lack of space.

Pendurei-o por cima da nossa "mesa de entrada", um antigo lavatório que recuperámos e que era assim:

The simple life

Ontem resolvi fazer um bolo de maçã e canela e levá-lo a casa dos meus avós. Meti-o dentro de um cesto e, qual Capuchinho Vermelho urbana, fui a pé pelas avenidas fora até ao meu destino.

Yesterday I baked an apple and cinnamon cake and went to my grandparent's to give it away. I put in inside a basket and, just like an urban Little Red Riding Hood, walked down the avenues to deliver it.

Em troca, trouxe este pé de cameleira. Acho-o mesmo elegante e adoro a flor!

In exchange I brought this camelia branch. I find it so elegant and I love the flower!

E pelos vistos não sou a única a associar bolos e camélias...

Last-minute gifts

Estes foram os presentes de última hora (aliás, de último minuto, porque foram feitos contra-relógio) para o baptizado de um pequeno novo primo. Em Dezembro subscrevi o Handmade Pledge, em que me comprometi a comprar coisas feitas à mão sempre que possível. Esta situação ainda foi melhor porque não comprei, fiz! É tão bom fazer presentes a pensar num bebé!

These were the last-minute gifts I made for a little new cousin's christening that took place today. Last December I took the Handmade Pledge, where I commited myself to buying handmade things whenever possible. But this situation was even better because I didn't buy the presents, I made them! It feels so good to make presents for a baby!

Fico sempre meio fascinada com o "poder" da costura... como é possível que tecidos planos contenham tanto potencial e possam ser transformados naquilo que quisermos. Quando acabo estes projectos sinto-me sempre plena, concretizada, cheia de satisfação! Pus dois guizos dentro desta bola para que desperte ainda mais curiosidade ao bebé.

I'm always a bit fascinated with the "power" of sewing... how it is possible that flat fabrics have so much potential and can be transformed into whatever we want. Whenever I finish projects like these I feel so full of satisfaction! I've put two little jingle bells inside the ball to awake the baby's curiosity.

Quanto a este boneco, é o lavender baby criado pela Molly Chicken. Tal como o nome indica, tem um bocadinho de alfazema misturada com o enchimento. O tecido dos carros é japonês e comprei-o aqui.

This softy is the lovely lavender baby by Molly Chicken. It has a bit of lavender mixed with the filling; as for the fabric with the little cars, it's Japanese and was bought here.

Robert Dudley Best drew the first drafts of the lamp that would later become synonymous with his name when he studied to become an industrial designer in Paris and Düsseldorf. As the lamp was the first example of Bauhaus in the UK, strong arguments were needed before the lamp could be put into production. The lamp was produced by the manufacturing firm Best & Lloyd, founded by Best’s family in 1840. After mention in the prominent architectural magazine Architects’ Journal, the architectural community opened its eyes to the lamp’s potential. Bestlite gained everlasting fame when Winston Churchill placed one on his desk in Whitehall.
