The other me

Have you ever thought about the lives of people in previous centuries? I'm not talking about political facts, economic crisis or social conjunctures -- I mean their actual lives, the everyday lives of all those man, women and children who inhabited 300 or 400 years ago these spaces where we now move. I think about it all the time. I've always been interested in looking at daily life, behaviours and mentalities through an historical -- especially feminine -- point of view.

Truth is I'm writing a thesis about maternity in the 16th and 17th centuries in Portugal, i. e., about the conceptions and practices connected to giving birth during the Modern Age. How exactly do I combine this with my Saídos da Concha® project? Currently, in a rather chaotic manner. Although I haven't lost interest in my research, the willingness to sew and create is usually superior and, at the end of the day, I feel guilty for letting my creative juices win over my intellectual work. Yesterday I re-did my inspiration board in search of motivation...

  1. The other you is very interesting! I once wrote a paper arguing against Barbara Duden's theories, and researching the topic wasn't easy. Good luck with your thesis: it will among the most important creations you can make.

Adoro as tuas criacões e o teu blog inspira-me sempre aqui longe na Suécia.

  3. I think you are wonderful for 'splitting yourself' in two ways, and being able to do it. It is a great topic too. And I wish you good luck with it. Perhaps you are able to be creative in between it all. But then it is being creative regardless...
I know it is not the same, but I have five young children and am desperately trying to learn French at the moment... and I try to be creative at the same time. Sometimes I do wonder if I should just stop and give myself a break sometimes. But how do you do that when you 'need' to create something?? :(

  9. Olá Constança,

Daqui escreve a Rita do Manel Jorge :). Beijinhos!

  10. I know what you mean, I'm in more or less the same situation... I'm still taking deep breaths before I get started with my thesis! Your topic sounds interesting though. Funny cause one of the topics I was considering for my thesis also had to do with (modern) motherhood and the possibility to find fulfillment and sense in it. Have to consider all my different ideas some more though... How long have you been working on your thesis so far?

  11. Carmo: tenho esse livri, obrigada pela sugestão!

Rita: bem-vinda!

Nina: I've been (supposely) working on my thesis for a year now but I've been sewing much more than I've been writing...

A todas as outras comentadoras, obrigada pelo interesse!

  12. Concha, this is so interesting, I like the other you and just because we are crafty does not mean we can't have other interests. But yes the creative monkeys are strong!

It is incredible how many things have changed in the past century and now there is a desire to bring back. Natural birth or birth with a midwife for example which the medical institution is so against at least here in the US, or breastfeeding instead of milk formula. It will be interesting to know about other practices, please tell us more anytime you feel like it.
