Por aqui as últimas semanas têm sido bastante preenchidas. O Pedro fez 6 meses e o Rodrigo fez 3 anos, arranjámos dois armários, cosi bastante, acolhemos uma visita inglesa e organizei a minha primeira festa infantil. Agora vamos de férias de para a praia (esperemos que o tempo seja nosso amigo) e estarei de volta daqui a uma semana. Até breve!

Around here these last few weeks have been filled with happy things. Pedro turned 6 months and Rodrigo is now a 3-year-old, we revamped two cupboards, I sewed a lot, we had an English guest and I threw my very first children's party. Now we're going on holidays to the beach (let's hope the weather is nice) and I'll be back here next week. See you soon!

Oliver + S Bucket Hat

Voltei a fazer um chapéu para o Rodrigo com o molde (gratuito) Reversible Bucket Hat. Este foi o quarto bucket hat que fiz para ele (podem ver as versões para 6 meses aqui e para 1 ano e meio aqui) e tenho a certeza de que não terá sido o último. 

Não sigo as instruções à letra, porque evito coser à mão sempre que consigo arranjar uma alternativa. Neste caso, a alternativa é construir o chapéu como se de um saco se tratasse: fazer o exterior, fazer o forro, colocá-los um dentro do outro, direito com direito, coser a toda a volta deixando uma abertura, virar para o direito e pespontar. Também incluo sempre um elástico — tanto a Nova Zelândia como Portugal são países ventosos (embora o vento na NZ esteja noutro campeonato) e, apesar de o elástico não ser muito bonito, prefiro ver o chapéu na cabeça do Rodrigo do que no chão. É certo que, com a inclusão do elástico, o chapéu deixa de ser reversível, mas dado que fiz o forro igual à parte de fora do chapéu...

Já experimentaram este molde? Dá para adaptar a rapazes e raparigas e funciona sempre. Recomendo-o vivamente!

I've made another Reversible Bucket Hat (free pattern) for Rodrigo. It's the fourth bucket hat I've made so far (check out the previous versions at 6 months and 1.5 years old) and I'm sure this one hasn't been the last.

I don't follow the instructions to the letter because I avoid hand-sewing whenever I can find a suitable alternative. In this case, the alternative is to construct the hat as if it were a bag: you make the exterior and the lining separately,  sew them right sides together, leaving a small opening, then turn the whole thing through the opening and topstitch all around the brim. I also like to include a piece of elastic, as both New Zealand and Portugal are windy countries (although NZ clearly wins in the wind department). Even though the elastic isn't exactly pretty, I'd rather see the hat on Rodrigo's head than on the floor. It's a fact that the inclusion of the elastic prevents the hat from being reversible but since I used the same fabric on the exterior and on the lining...

Have you ever used this pattern? You can easily adapt it suit to boys and girls alike and it always turns out great. I highly recommend it!

Tomates de Jardim :: Garden Tomatoes

Apesar de a Nova Zelândia não ser um país quente como Portugal, é bem mais temperado do que o Reino Unido. Chove bastante, o vento é inacreditável, mas felizmente há muitos dias de sol (o sol mais forte que senti na minha vida). Chuva + sol + terra fértil = jardins com muita produtividade!

Há uns anos, quando ainda vivíamos em Inglaterra, escrevi uns posts que intitulei "a saga do tomateiro"... a verdade é tentar cultivar tomates num jardim inglês (sem estufa) é uma verdadeira saga. Aqui na Nova Zelândia basta plantá-los na terra e ir regando. Nem imagino como será em Portugal!

Mais uma vez verifico que vale a pena fazer experiências. Não é preciso ter uma horta a sério para comer fruta e vegetais homegrown — basta um canteiro ou até mesmo uns vasos. Experimentem!

Although New Zealand isn't as hot as Portugal, it's much warmer than the UK. It rains quite a lot and the wind is unbelievable but thank goodness there are many sunny days (never before had I felt such a strong sun). Rain + sun + fertile soil = very productive gardens!

Back in 2011, when we were still living in England, I wrote a series of posts that I entitled "the tomato plant saga"... attempting to grow tomatoes in an English garden (with no greenhouse) is a real saga. Here in NZ you just plant and water them. I can't imagine how it's like in Portugal!

Once again I realise that it pays to conduct your own little experiments. You don't need a proper kitchen garden in order to eat homegrown produce — one bed or a few pots will do the trick. Do give it a try!

Apanhar Mirtilos :: Picking Blueberries

No fim-de-semana passado fomos apanhar mirtilos a uma daquelas quintas pick-your-own. Havia centenas de arbustos carregados de bagas e teve muita graça ver o Rodrigo a apanhar, comer e atirar mirtilos ao ar. Foi uma manhã muito bem passada!

Nesse dia o Tiago e eu jantámos panquecas de mirtilo e estou a pensar fazer uns batidos e uns quantos frascos de doce. Alguém tem mais sugestões?

Last weekend we went blueberry picking to one of those pick-your-own farms. There were hundreds of bushes laden with berries and it was fun to watch Rodrigo picking, eating and throwing them in the air. It was a morning well-spent!

That day Tiago and I ate blueberry pancakes for dinner and I'm planning on making smoothies and a batch of jam. Have you got any other ideas?

Praia! :: Beach!

Que bom que é ver o Rodrigo todo contente na praia, ainda por cima vestido com coisas feitas por mim! Os chapéus são do livro Little Things to Sew (já tinha feito um no ano passado) e os calções de banho foram feitos com base no molde Kid Shorts Made (à semelhança dos calções dos pijamas), com algumas alterações: para lhes dar um ar de praia, fiz duas casas de botão à frente para fazer passar um cordão e cosi um bolso atrás. Os dois primeiros foram feitos com tecidos leves de algodão; o último par foi um aproveitamento de um fato-de-banho do Tiago. Viva o Verão!

It´s wonderful to see Rodrigo at the beach looking so happy and at ease, especially when he's wearing the things I made for him. The hats are from the book Little Things to Sew (I had already made one last year) and the shorts were made using the Kid Shorts Made pattern (the same pattern I used to sew him some pyjamas) with some alterations. To give them a beach look, I sewed a couple of buttonholes in the front and added drawstrings, as well as a pocket in the back. The fabrics I used for the first two pairs of shorts are lightweight cotton lawns; for the third pair I repurposed an old pair of Tiago's swim trunks. Hurrah for summer!

Flores de Setembro :: September Flowers

Para o baptizado do Rodrigo fiz três arranjos de flores: um na sala, por cima da lareira, outro na mesa de entrada e um terceiro na casa de jantar. Como sempre, todas as flores vieram do jardim (que, por esta altura do ano, já se encontra praticamente esgotado).

For Rodrigo's christening I made three flowers arrangements: one for the mantelpiece in the sitting room, another for the the hallway table and one for the dining room. As usual, the flowers all came from the garden (which is looking rather depleted this time of year).

Praça :: Farmers' Market

Quilos e quilos de citrinos óptimos, mel para dar e vender, ameixas dulcíssimas do tamanho de tomates-cereja, peixe fresco... como é bom ir à praça em Portugal! 

Kilos and kilos of citrus fruits, loads of honey jars, incredibly sweet plums as small as cherry tomatoes, fresh fish... Portuguese farmers' market are wonderful!

Praia :: Beach

Que bom é sair de Lisboa e ir para o pé do mar! Tinha tantas saudades disto.

It's wonderful to get away from Lisbon and head somewhere near the sea! I miss these things so much.
