2012

À semelhança do que tenho feito em anos anteriores (2011, 2010, 2009 e 2008), hoje é dia de fechar o ano de 2012 com uma recapitulação breve daquilo que se passou aqui pelo blog.

Just as I've been doing over the past few years (2011, 2010, 2009 e 2008), today is the day when we review some of the things I made in 2012.

Em Janeiro escrevi dois tutoriais (fita de viés e toalha com capuz), fiz um livro de pano para a minha sobrinha e continuei a preparar a chegada iminente do Rodrigo (achava eu que era iminente... a verdade é que ele ficou praticamente 42 semanas dentro da minha barriga).

In January I wrote two tutorials (how to make bias tape and instructions on sewing a hooded baby towel), sewed a fabric book for my niece and continued my preparations for Rodrigo's imminent arrival (at the time I though it was imminent... in fact, he stayed almost 42 weeks inside me).

Em Fevereiro fiz bolos e arranjos de flores, tricotei, o Rodrigo nasceu e completei 30 anos.

In February I baked, arranged flowers and knitted. Rodrigo was born and I became 30.

Em Março o jardim encheu-se de narcisos e fui fazendo uma ou outra coisa para o Rodrigo (babetes, calças à marinheiro, um muda-fraldas). Mas principalmente aprendi a ser mãe...  digamos que os primeiros tempos não foram fáceis.

In March the garden was filled with daffodils and I made some things for Rodrigo (bibs, a pair of sailor trousers and a changing mat). But mostly I learnt how to be a mother... let's just say that the early days weren't exactly easy for me.

Em Abril fiz umas jardineiras para o Rodrigo, o presente de 1 ano da minha sobrinha (uma boneca com o respectivo quilt), voltei a vender quilt kits e estreei-me no English paper piecing (ainda não utilizei todos aqueles hexágonos mas já sei precisamente o que vou fazer com eles).

In April I made a pair of spotty dungarees for Rodrigo and my niece's 1st birthday present (a doll and her quilt). I started selling quilt kits again and tried my hand at English paper piecing (I still haven't put all those hexagons to use but I know exactly what I'm going to do with them).

Em Maio fiz uma clutch para levar ao casamento da minha amiga Mafalda, um lençol para a cama do Rodrigo, um toldo para proteger o Rodrigo do sol e um tutorial sobre como transformar uma camisa de bebé num body.

In May I sewed a clutch to take to my friend Mafalda's wedding, a top sheet for Rodrigo's bed and a canopy for the pram. I also put together a quick tutorial on turning a baby's shirt into a bodysuit.

Em Junho voltei aos quilt kits, transformei uma estante num armário de bebé, experimentei receitas antigas e o Rodrigo estreou-se nas sopas e papas.

In June I was back to quilt kits. I also turned an Ikea bookcase into a wardrobe for the nursery and tested old family recipes. Rodrigo got his first taste of solid food.

Em Julho o blog esteve de férias. Em Agosto fiz mais lençóis para o Rodrigo, tricotei (camisola bretã ainda por acabar... mãe?) e fiz kits atrás de  kits.

In July this blog was closed for the summer holidays. In August I sewed some more sheets for Rodrigo, knitted (this sailor shirt is still unfinished... mum?) and put together lots of quilt kits.

Em Setembro voltaram as camisolas de lã e as fazendas escocesas. Foi tempo de celebrações e de aproveitar ao máximo a casa.

In September we were back to wooly jumpers and tartans. It was a month of celebrations and we got to  enjoy our lovely home.

Em Outubro continuei a fazer coisas para a cama do Rodrigo (ou não fosse eu obcecada com sestas e noites bem dormidas), lancei colecções de retalhos, fiz presentes e aproveitei o Outono.

In October I kept making things for Rodrigo's bed (can you tell I'm obsessed with sleeping patterns?), sold most of my fabric scraps, made some presents and made the most of autumn days.

Novembro foi o mês dos quilt kits, retalhos e fat quarters, de fazer mais uns quantos presentes e de dizer adeus a Inglaterra.

November was the month of quilt kits, fabric scarps and fat quarters. I made a couple of presents and we said our goodbyes to England.

E em Dezembro começámos a nossa vida na Nova Zelândia. Passámos o nosso primeiro Natal com calor (30ºC e 100% de humidade... estava insuportável) e no dia a seguir fomos à praia.

A todas as pessoas que lêem este blog desejo um 2013 em cheio, com muitos planos e projectos concretizados, muita amizade e amor, muita alegria e muita paz. Cá nos encontraremos!

And in December we started our life in New Zealand. We spent our first Christmas in the heat (30ºC with 100% humidity... it was almost unbearable) and we went to the beach on Boxing Day.

Flora Inglesa :: English Flora

Estes dias entre o Natal e o Ano Novo são óptimos para passar em revista o que se passou e fazer planos para o ano que se avizinha. Estou a vibrar com as flores que vejo à beira das estradas aqui na NZ e lembrei-me de ir ver os arranjos que fiz ao longo dos três anos que estivemos em Inglaterra. Ora ficam aqui algumas imagens da nossa lareira em diversas estações do ano.

These days between Christmas and the New Year are great for reviewing what has happened throughout the months and to make plans for the year ahead. I'm excited with the flowers I'm seeing on NZ road verges so I thought I'd revisit some of the arrangements I made over the three years we lived in England. Natal Washi :: Washi Christmas

Durante anos resisti à washi tape (fita-cola japonesa feita de papel de arroz). Muito francamente, achava que era supérflua e cara. Mas viver num motel é a desculpa perfeita para comprar pequenas coisas que dêem sabor ao dia-a-dia: revistas e mais revistas de decoração, alguns livros sobre a Nova Zelândia... e washi tape.

Este foi o primeiro Natal do Rodrigo e, como tal, achei que tinha mesmo de haver uma árvore. No dia 24 peguei num pacote de quadrados de algodão e nas minhas (agora muito queridas) washi e colei uma espécie de árvore de Natal na parede. E no dia 25 à tarde tirámos a árvore da parede (as washi são óptimas porque não deixam resíduo).

Os presentes foram embrulhados com washi tape e papel pautado cor-de-rosa (que encontrei na papelaria e ao qual não consegui resistir).

For years I've resisted washi tape. To be perfectly honest, I always thought is was superfluous and expensive. But living in a motel is the perfect excuse to buy all sorts of small things that will enhance your everyday life: heaps of interior magazines, some books about New Zealand... and washi tape.

This was Rodrigo's first Christmas so I reckoned we really needed a Christmas tree. On the 24th I grabbed a packet of cotton wool squares and my (now beloved) washi and taped a sort of tree to the wall. And in the afternoon of the 25th we took the tree down (washi tape is great because it leaves no residue).

Presents were wrapped using washi tape and some pink ruled paper (that I found at the stationery shop and couldn't resist buying).

Op Shops

Algumas fotografias tiradas com o telemóvel para vos mostrar que cá também há lojas de caridade (op shops no dialecto local) e que o Rodrigo ficou claramente entusiasmado com o stock (em Inglaterra a atitude dele era bastante mais blasé).

Just a few pictures snapped with my mobile phone to show you that there's no shortage of charity shops in New Zealand (they're called op shops here) and that Rodrigo was clearly impressed with their stock (in England he was a lot more nonchalant about them).

Um Natal Neo-Zelandês :: A Kiwi Christmas

Adoro estas etiquetas de Natal que descobri numa papelaria aqui da zona. Um Natal com calor é para mim estranhíssimo, mas um Natal com sentido de humor... isso é altamente refrescante.

Que mais descobri na papelaria? Que se deve andar sempre com os olhos bem abertos e que há mil possibilidades para embrulhos alternativos. Lembram-se dos mapas e das caixas de bolos? Pois este ano uso papel quadriculado e caixas para noodles. 

I love these Christmas gift tags I found at the local stationery shop. Christmas in summer is such an odd thing for me but Christmas with a sense of humour... now that's highly refreshing.

What else have I found at the shop? That you should always keep your eyes open and that there's a thousand different possibilities for gift wrapping. Remember the maps and the bakery boxes? Well, this year I'm going for grid paper and noodle boxes.

Chegámos! :: We've arrived!

Já chegámos à terra das montanhas, do gado, da Primavera a cheirar a flores, das praias cheias de madeira, do rugby e das cidades que parecem cenários de filmes Western. As viagens de avião foram bastante desafiantes mas não tenebrosas, felizmente, e o Rodrigo anda madrugador mas já está perfeitamente adaptado aos novos horários. A internet é que é escassa, por isso não prometo posts diários. Até breve!

We have arrived in the land of mountains, sheep, cattle, rugby, driftwood beaches and towns that look like Western movie sets. Spring smells like flowers, it's wonderful. The plane trips were challenging but not horrific, thank goodness, and Rodrigo wakes up at dawn but is quickly adapting to local time. Only the internet is scarce so I can't promise daily posts for now. See you soon!
