Introducing Clutch Week

"Money-saving recessionistas, listen up – if you want to get your hands on just one instant wardrobe update this season, make it a clutch. Small enough to stay the right side of elegant but large enough for your everyday bits and bobs, this statement bag remains the essential accessory for SS09 [Spring-Summer 2009]."

-

I proclaim this week to be clutch week. Usually clutches are associated with formal occasions: weddings, dinner parties, cocktail receptions; moments when people wear taffeta, silk and satin. In contrast, you may have noticed that Saídos da Concha’s clutches are made in cotton and linen and that I always choose fresh fabrics with vibrant prints.
This week’s purpose is to show you that Saídos da Concha’s clutches may be carried in chic occasions but also, and mostly, make an excellent choice when you go out for lunch with your friends, or go to the theatre, to a concert or even a job interview.
Therefore, each of the following days will present you with situations where clutches stand out. I hope you’ll like it and feel inspired. And watch out because on Friday I’ve got a little surprise up my sleeve!

Introducing :: Deauville Clutches

-
For most people, the beach means warm waters, palm trees and white, fine sand. However, when I think about holidays by the sea, I always remember São Pedro de Moel, the beach of my childhood, where the sea is rough and freezing, the sand coarse and the weather moody. Instead of palm trees there are pine trees and, at night, you'd better put on a sweater.
-

XIX.
-

For some time now I've been wanting to translate this northern beach feeling into clutches. Then I remember my trip to Deauville when I was living in Paris as an Erasmus exchange student. Deauville is a fashionable beach town in Normandy, where traditional families as well as celebrities have been spending their summers since the 19th century.

Apresento-vos, pois, a minha nova linha intitulada Deauville clutches.

I am proud to present you my new line of Deauville clutches. The four available clutches feature maritime stripes on the outside and matching polka dots inside. The fabric flower gives them a modern, feminine twist.

Há em cor-de rosa...

You'll find them in pink...

Clutch Week :: vintage patterns

-
I'm not reinventing the wheel when I say that clutches are the epitome of femininity and can be used both by day and evening. These envelope patterns from the 50s and 60s show that clutches have been around for a long time...

After many, many hours choosing the ideal colour, size and placement for each button, I can finally say that there are three new clutches in the shop. Two of them have been made in corse, unbleached linen and each of them has more than 100 buttons hand-sewn all around its top (one in shades of blue, the other in tones of brown); the third one has been made using a piece of cotton printed with graphic flowers and has 40 buttons in black and grey hand-sewn to its centre pannel. They're all available here.

Cheiram todas a Verão.

Margarida ordered three clutches: one for her sister, one for her aunt and another one for herself. They all make me think of summer.

2011

It's important to make plans and resolutions for the new year but let's not forget to celebrate everything that we've achieved in the year that is now ending. You may have already realised that I strive to mark the seasons, make the most of everyday pleasures and focus on the positive things in my life so this yearly exercise never fails to make me feel lucky and joyful.

In January snowdrops started showing up in the garden and Seville oranges at the greengrocers'. I bought old tartan kilts and tweed jackets and turned them into wintery bags.

In February I turned a year older, we spent some days in Cornwall (where I picked the first spring flowers), I made a scone cosy and some oilcloth bibs.

In March spring sprang! I sewed a lot of fabric bibs for the shop and made a baby quilt for our little niece who was about to be born.

April was the month of Easter, flowery bags and a trip to London for the launch of the book Decorate.

In May it was Tiago's birthday, I made new clutches and launched a small collection of scarves.

In June we celebrated Sain Anthony's day indoors (it was raining), I sewed my very first t-shirt, spent hours in the kitchen making jam and discovered I was going to have a baby!

July was the month for poppies, summer sewing and holidays at the beach in Portugal.

In August I stopped ignoring our sitting room and made some beanbags and cushions to make it more comfortable; we also transformed a pallet into a coffee table. The garden was full of flowers, fruits, insects and birds.

In September autumn arrived (my favourite season in this country). The countryside was ripe with foraging possibilities and I made wreaths and preserves. I also started sewing for our baby (a boy!).

In October I finally completed the coin quilt I had started in 2009, made button clutches and kept on raiding our garden for flower arranging material.

November was quilt month: I wrote a series of posts on the subject and launched my quilt kits for beginners.

In December I shared with you some ideas and suggestions for another homemade Christmas.

I hope 2012 will be a truly great year for all of us! :)
