E agora para nos rirmos um bocado... Estas capas de modelos de tricot antigos que encontrei numa loja de caridade aqui perto são qualquer coisa. As poses!! Eu gosto especialmente do sexto a contar de cima. E vocês, qual é o vosso preferido?

And now for a bit of a laugh... These covers of old knitting patterns I found at a local charity shop are to die for. The poses!! I especially like the 6th one. What about you, which one is your favourite?

Molas para Mudar Fraldas :: How to Add Snaps for Easy Nappy Changing

Não é novidade nenhuma que passo a vida em lojas de caridade, feiras e todo o tipo de vendas de artigos em segunda-mão. Estou sempre atenta a possíveis peças de roupa para o Rodrigo — em Inglaterra ainda consegui comprar uma mão-cheia delas, aqui tem sido mais difícil. Mas há uns tempos deparei-me com estas jardineiras tamanho 2 anos. São simples, alegres, bem feitas e as pernas em balão até têm graça (acho que é suposto serem calções, mas ele vai usando como calças até que chegue o Verão). Só tinham um problema: nada de molas entre pernas para mudar as fraldas.

Mas é para isto mesmo que serve uma máquina de costura, não é? Para nos libertar da tirania do pronto-a-vestir! I've got the power! Esta transformação foi muito fácil, mas mesmo assim lembrei-me de tirar fotografias passo-a-passo para vos poder mostrar como isto não tem nada que saber. Ora vejam só:

You already know I'm always looking for interesting second-hand items in charity shops, fairs and the like. One of the things on my radar is clothing for Rodrigo — in England I managed to find a handful of nice pieces but here in New Zealand it's not as easy. Anyway, a while ago I stumbled upon this pair of dungarees size 2. They're simple, cheerful, well-made and the puffed legs are kind of cute (I think they're supposed to be worn as shorts but at present he'll be wearing them as trousers). They only had a problem: no snaps for easy nappy changing.

But that's what a sewing machine is for, right? To free us from the tyranny of ready-to-wear? I've got the power! This was such an easy transformation but nevertheless I took some photos in order to show you how simple it is. Here goes:

1. Descoser a costura entre pernas e um bocado das bainhas. 

1. Unpick the seam between the legs as well as a little bit from the hem.

2. Dobrar as margens de costura entre pernas e refazer as bainhas.

2. Turn the seam allowances under and re-stitch the hems.

3. Passar a ferro as margens de costura entre pernas.

3. Press the seam allowances flat.

4. Cortar dois bocados de fita de molas à medida.

4. Cut two pieces of snap tape to measure.

5. Alfinetar e coser a toda a volta da fita, usando um pé calcador para fechos éclair. Atenção que a fita vai ser aplicada de um lado do direito e de outro do avesso das jardineiras. Eu usei linha branca em cima e azul-escura em baixo.

5. Pin and stitch all around the snap tape using a zipper foot. Take notice that on side the tape will be sewn on the wrong side of the dungarees, whilst on the other it'll be sewn on the right side. I used white thread on top and navy blue on the bottom.

6. Já está! Claro que em vez de fita de molas, podia ter usado molas de pressão, molas de coser ou até mesmo botões. 

6. You're done! Instead of snap tape you could use press studs, sew-in snaps or even buttons.

Plantar Árvores :: Planting Trees

No fim-de-semana passado plantámos cinco árvores no nosso jardim: uma macieira, um marmeleiro, uma figueira, uma laranjeira e um abacateiro. O Rodrigo adorou participar! Cavou, mexeu na terra, chapinhou na lama e correu por todo o lado. Fico tão contente por ele poder andar assim ao ar livre... espero estar a criar um pequeno jardineiro!

Last weekend we planted some trees in the garden: apple, quince, fig, orange and avocado (one of each). Rodrigo loved the experience! He dug, played with the soil, rolled in the mud and run around. I'm so happy that he's getting this chance to be outdoors so much... I hope I'm raising a little gardener!

À Escala :: A Matter of Scale

Um bolo grande para nós, um bolo pequeno para ele. À escala, pois claro!

(o bolo de iogurte e limão é um bolo bom, fácil e versátil que faço muitas vezes — ver aqui, por exemplo —; a receita vem neste livro)

A large cake for us, a small cake for him. A matter of scale, indeed!

Folhas :: Leaves

Foi em Cape Cod, na nossa lua-de-mel em Setembro de 2007, que fiquei completamente rendida ao Outono. Nunca até aí tinha visto árvores assim, folhas assim, cores assim. Os três anos que vivemos em Inglaterra vieram cimentar este meu fascínio outonal. A verdade é que gosto de árvores durante todo o ano: despidas no Inverno, floridas na Primavera, verdes no Verão... mas, a meu ver, é no Outono que elas atingem o seu auge.

Apanhei todas estas folhas no caminho entre a nossa casa e a escola do Rodrigo (os tais 4 km que faço a pé todos os dias). O caminho é sempre o mesmo, mas a natureza nunca é igual. Neste momento há  camélias que começam a abrir, bolbos que despontam nos jardins e folhas que mudam de cor e caem no chão. Estas pequenas ocorrências reconfortam-me e tornam os meus dias menos monótonos e muito mais felizes. 

It was in Cape Cod, during our honeymoon in September 2007, that I fell head over heels with Autumn. Never before had I seen such trees, such leaves, such colours. The three years we lived in England made this autumnal fascination of mine grow even stronger. It's a fact that I love trees throughout the year: naked in winter, flowery in spring, green in summer... but, for me, it's in Autumn that they reach their peek.

I gathered these leaves on the way between our house and Rodrigo's daycare (those 4 km I walk every day). The road never changes but nature is never the same. At the moment camellias are starting to bloom, there are bulbs poking through the ground in some gardens and leaves that change colour and fall down. These small occurrences comfort me and make my days less monotone and much happier.

Instagram

Com ou sem pausa no blog, a vida continua e o meu Instagram tem andado tudo menos parado. Não ter de pensar em posts diários tem sido bom e sinto-me mais descontraída e mais produtiva. Espero voltar em breve a estas partes — até lá, podem encontrar-me aqui.

Blog break or not, life goes on and my Instagram activity shows it. Not having to think about producing regular blog content is proving to be very good for me at this moment and I've been feeling more relaxed and productive. I'm hoping to resume my blogging very soon — until then, you can find me here.

Since the post is in Portuguese only, let me give you an idea of its contents: Rodrigo absolutely loves Dear Zoo by Rod Campbell and I was a huge fan of Enid Blyton's series (The Famous Five, The Secret Seven, Malory Towers, St Clare's and so forth).

Abrandar :: Slowing Down

Devagar vamos conhecendo melhor a Nova Zelândia. Apesar de todas as coisas boas que há por cá, a minha adaptação tem sido lenta e nem sempre fácil. Tem-me faltado a vontade de escrever e cheguei (relutantemente) à conclusão de que preciso mesmo de fazer uma pausa aqui no blog. Aliás, acho que vou experimentar fazer uma dieta de internet. Não vou desaparecer mas vou abrandar o meu ritmo online durante uns tempos. Até breve!

Slowly we are getting to know New Zealand. Despite all the good things that can be found around here, my acclimation to this new reality has been slow and not always easy. I haven't been in the mood for writing and I've finally (albeit reluctantly) come to terms with the fact that I need a blog break. In fact, I think I'm going to try an internet diet. I don't plan to disappear entirely but I'm definitely going to decelerate my online rhythm. See you soon!
