Sudbury Hall - II

Outra das coisas de que gosto nas grandes casas inglesas é que, em termos de decoração, sabem quando muito é demasiado. No caso da galeria de Sudbury Hall, que tem estuques esplendorosos no tecto, as cortinas são brancas, de algodão fino, muito simples (fazem lembrar as tradicionais cortinas de cassa portuguesas). Não poderiam ser mais perfeitas.

Another thing I like about English country houses is that, when it comes to decorating, they know when to stop. For instance, the Long Gallery in Sudbury Hall has splendorous plasterwork in the ceiling and yet the white cotton curtains are quite plain. I think they're just perfect.

Dias com Mafalda

Sabiam que a Mafalda Pinto Leite, para além de ser autora de dois livros de cozinha ultra apetecíveis (e parece que vem mais um a caminho!), também tem um blog cheio de receitas e de histórias pessoais? Preparem-se, porque a Mafalda está cheia de projectos que vão dar que falar...! Entretanto, para quem quiser experimentar o pão que se come diariamente cá em casa, a receita está por lá.

Sudbury Hall

De todas as casas da National Trust que temos visitado, a minha preferida até ao momento é Sudbury Hall. Acho que tem uma dimensão muito humana e isso fez-me sentir bem lá dentro. O que mais me fascina nestas casas é, através dos móveis e dos tecidos, perceber que, ao longo do tempo, gerações da mesma família se foram apropriando do espaço, transformando-o ao seu gosto e conforme as suas necessidades.

Of all the National Trust houses we've visited so far, Sudbury Hall is my favourite. I find that it has a very human dimension and that makes me feel good. The thing that really fascinates me about these houses is that you can actually see, through all the furniture and fabrics, how each generation turned the place into their own home.

Shop Update

Há sete novas clutches de Primavera na loja! Adoro a minha nova sala de trabalho e tenho mesmo de a fotografar. Mas só depois de a arrumar! O que, pensando bem, vai ser difícil porque já estou a trabalhar para o próximo shop update e há tecidos espalhados por todo o lado...

There are seven new spring clutches in the shop! I'm in love in my new workroom and I really must photograph it. But first I must tidy it up! Well, that's actually going to be difficult because I'm already working on the next shop update and there's fabric all over the place...

O Roupão Perfeito :: The Perfect Robe

Há quem procure a receita perfeita de bolo de chocolate. A minha mãe há que tempos que anda em busca do roupão de Inverno perfeito. Tem de ser comprido, e todo abotoado, e convém que não pareça um saco de batatas. No Outono passámos umas horas no motor de busca do Etsy e finalmente a minha mãe decidiu-se pelo modelo acima. Mas o projecto não avançou porque o tecido acolchoado ideal não aparecia nem por nada.

Eis que hoje recebo um telefonema entusiamado. Não é que a colecção Love da Amy Butler acaba de sair em versão acolchoada dupla face? Agora também fiquei com vontade de ter um roupão assim!

There are people who are always searching for the perfect chocolate cake recipe. My mother has been searching for the perfect winter robe for ages. It must be long and buttoned and it better not look like a potato sack. Last autumn we spent some hours on Etsy's search engine and finally my mother decided that she wanted to sew the pattern above. But the project never went on because the ideal quilted fabric proved impossible to find.

Today I got an excited phone call from her. Did you know that Amy Butler's Love collection just came out as double faced quilted fabrics? Now I guess I want a robe too!

Livros de Costura :: Sewing Books

À semelhança dos depósitos de móveis velhos, adoro livrarias que vendem livros em 2ª mão. E lojas de caridade. Todas elas, obviamente, cheias de pechinchas impossíveis de resistir.

As well as warehouses full of old furniture, I love second-hand bookshops. And charity shops. All of them are, of course, packed with bargains too good to resist.

A Loo with no View

Quem me dera poder fazer cortinas assim para a casa toda: duas costuras, um esticador, camarões e já está. Fácil, barato, rápido. Infelizmente, cortinas deste género só dão para as casas de banho e para este tipo de janelas que abrem em cima e para o exterior...

I wish I could make curtains like this one for the the whole house: two seams, an elastic rod, some eye hooks and that's it. Easy, cheap, quick. Unfortunately, such curtains are only good for bathrooms and for this particular type of windows that open on top and towards the outside...

O pano foi tecido à mão, há muitos anos, algures na Europa central e comprei-o aqui. É mais escuro do que estava à espera, mas não faz mal porque combina com a alcatifa. (!) 

The cloth was hand-woven many years ago, somewhere in central Europe, and I bought it here. It's darker than expected but that's all right because it matches the carpet. (!)

O quadro não passa de uma página que arranquei de uma revista de 1953, o ano da coroação da presente rainha, revista essa que comprei num car boot sale só por causa dos anúncios.

The picture on the wall is just a page torn from a 1953 magazine (Coronation year) that I bought at a car boot sale just because of all the ads in it.

Achados :: Bargains

Aviso: neste post vou falar em dinheiro. Sei que é feio, e não faz parte das minhas conversas habituais, mas como posso falar em pechinchas sem dizer quanto custaram?

Disclaimer: throughout this post money will be mentioned. I know it's not elegant to do so, and I don't really like speaking about it, but how can I talk about bargains without mentioning their price?

O depósito de móveis do YMCA não deixa de me surpreender. Primeiro encontrámos lá a nossa mesa de jantar, lembram-se?, por umas meras £30. Estamos a falar numa mesa de madeira, sólida, cheia de riscos e com um verniz duvidoso, é certo, mas perfeita para ser pintada de branco.

YMCA's furniture warehouse has quickly become one of my favourite shops. That's where we first bought our dining table, remember?, for a mere £30. I'm talking about a solid wooden table, with lots of scratches and a poor finish, true,but just perfect to be painted white.

Voltei lá umas semanas mais tarde e dei de caras com exactamente aquilo de que andava à procura: uma mesa de café anos 50. A casa de praia dos meus avós está cheia de móveis do género, e talvez seja por isso que gosto tanto deste estilo. É leve, é despretensiosa, evoca memórias de infância, e custou £5. Sim, o tampo tem riscos, mas o que é que isso interessa? A mesa vai estar sempre coberta de revistas e livros!

Some weeks after that, I went there again and stumbled upon exactly what I'd been looking for: a 50s coffee table. My grandparents' beach house is full of this type of furniture, which might explain why I love this style so much. The table is light and unpretentious, it evoques childhood memories and it cost £5. Yes, the top has some scratches, but who cares? It will always be covered with books and magazines anyway!

E, por fim, a pièce de résistance: uma mesa art déco por £10. Custava £15, mas o senhor que me atendeu resolveu fazer-me um desconto. Porquê? Não faço ideia, visto que a mesa está impecável. O folheado está intacto, não tem um risco, não está desconjuntada, nada. Pensando melhor, esta mesa merece duas fotografias.

And finally the pièce de résistance: an art déco table for £10. Originally it was £15 but the person behind the counter decided to make me a discount. Why? I have no idea, since the table is in perfect condition. The veneer is impeccable, it hasn't got a single scratch, it's standing straight. Actually, I think this table deserves two pictures.

Pequeno-Almoço de Domingo :: Sunday Breakfast

No país em que o sunday lunch é uma instituição, nós preferimos um pequeno-almoço reforçado. Hoje tivemos ovos quentes, pão caseiro, chocolate quente  e muitas revistas.

In the country where sunday lunch is an institution, we prefer a hearty breakfast. Today we had soft boiled eggs, homemade bread, hot chocolate and lots of magazines.

English Country Life :: Sunset

Gosto do anoitecer no campo. E do amanhecer. E, à noite, das estrelas. Sinto-me cheia de sorte por poder viver tudo isto.

I love dusk in the country. And dawn. And, at night, all the stars. I feel so lucky to be able to experience all this.

Ainda as Estantes :: Bookcases II

Depois de ter publicado o post de ontem, fiquei com vontade de partilhar alguns pormenores da nossa estante convosco.

Today I'm going to share with you some details in our bookcases, all right?

Bolbos são omnipresentes nesta terra. Depois de os ver à venda em todas as esquinas, fiquei com vontade de ter alguns na nossa sala. Um dia o Tiago chegou a casa com estes dois exemplares (sim, ele é mesmo o melhor marido do mundo!). Cheiram lindamente e é uma maneira óptima de ter flores frescas todos os dias. Enquanto não arranjo umas taças destas, cobri os vasos (de plástico, bah!) com papel de seda branco.

There are bulbs in every corner of this country. After seeing so many of them, I started wishing to have some in our sitting room. One day Tiago came home with these two (yes, he really is the best husband in the world!). They smell divine and it's a great way to have fresh flowers everyday. I'm hoping to get some bowls like these ones; in the mean time, I covered the (plastic, bah!) vases with white tissue paper.

Comprámos estes esboços numa feira a que fomos há uns tempos. O estilo chamou-me a atenção e um dos desenhos até vem assinado e datado (M. B. Poxon, Nov. 1938: googlei o nome mas não encontrei nada). Pu-los numa moldura do IKEA com pano cru a servir de fundo.

We bought these fashion sketches in an antique fair. The style caught my eye and one of the drawings has a great bonus: it's signed and dated (M. B. Poxon, Nov. 1938: I googled it but nothing came up). I framed them with the help of good old IKEA against an unbleached muslin background.

Adoro esta gravura, e ainda por cima o download é gratuito! The Free Art Project é uma iniciativa absolutamente bestial, já imprimi umas quantas imagens de lá.

I love this print and the great news is that the download is free! The Free Art Project is absolutely brilliant, I've already printed quite a few pictures.

This is my pile of books awaiting to be read (I find that if I place them on the shelves, I quickly forget them). The print is by Pedro Gaspar, the photo was taken by Tiago, the rabbit is called Labbit and the car is from FAO Schwartz.

E, finalmente, um poster de uma festa a que a minha mãe foi em 1973 e que descobri em casa da minha avó.
