Domingo em casa / Sunday at home

Neste domingo cinzento e pastelão, acabei uma encomenda pendente há um mês: um kidlet para os sacos de plástico com destino a uma cozinha no Luxemburgo. Sabe-me bem passar um dia a coser em casa.

On this grey, lazy Sunday I finally finished a commission I was asked over a month ago: a kidlet for storing plastic bags in a kitchen in Luxembourg. It feels so good to spend a day sewing at home .

Aulas de quilting / Quilting lessons

Há duas semanas comecei com aulas de quilting e não poderia ter escolhido melhor professora. Na primeira sessão aprendi a cortar e a construir os blocos; na segunda, a coser tudo e a fazer a sandwich do top, batting e backing.

Two weeks ago I started my quilting lessons. I could't have chosen a better teacher. At the first session I learned how to cut and construct blocks; at the second one I was taught how to piece everything and how to make the top, batting and backing sandwich.

O trabalho de casa é quiltar tudo. Escolhi coser linhas a direito, pararelas aos quadrados... o problema é que não tenho walking foot (pelos vistos não há nenhum que se adapte à minha máquina de principiante). Vamos ver como corre...

My homework is to quilt it. I chose to sew straight lines that run parallel to the squares... the only problem is that I don't own a walking foot (apparently there's no walking foot that will fit my beginner's sewing machine). Let's see how it goes...

Comprar feito à mão - II / Buying handmade - II

Já andava a namorar os bolos da Sílvia há uns tempos. Quando os vi pela primeira vez pensei imediatamente: a quem posso oferecer isto? Não tenho irmãs, filhas, primas, sobrinhas ou amigas em idade de brincar com bonecas, por isso pus a ideia de parte. Mas, de vez em quando, ia espreitar a loja... até que a semana passada comprei um bolo para mim. Qual é o mal de comprar um objecto pelo puro prazer de olhar para ele?

Sílvia's cakes have been on my mind for some time. When I first saw them, I immediatly thought: whom can I give this to? I have no sisters, daughters, cousins, nieces or friends who still play with dolls so it was difficult for me to find a reason to buy them. But once and again I paid a little visit to her shop... and last week I bought myself a cake. What's wrong with buying something only for the pleasure of looking at it?

E hoje recebi um bolo muito apetitoso, numa embalagem muito gira e cor-de-rosa, que eu abri cheia de vontade de voltar a ser criança e brincar com bonecas e serviços de chá e tachos e panelas (estes últimos eram os meus brinquedos preferidos... quem diria que um dia mais tarde iria detestar cozinhar?). O bolo não é o máximo?

And today I received a yummy cake inside a very cute and very pink box, that I opened wishing I could become a child again and play with dolls, tea sets, pots and pans (these last items were my favourite toys... who would have thought later on I would hate cooking?). Isn't the cake wonderful?

Já está arrumado na prateleira dos botões, mesmo por cima da máquina de costura, onde o poderei ver todos os dias.

Olá Outono / Hello Autumn

É engraçado ver como tantos crafty blogs celebram as estações do ano. A mim também me fascinam e nunca me canso de admirar as transformações que suscitam. No Outono, adoro a mudança de cor das folhas, principalmente quando se transmutam num encarniçado raiado de verdes e amarelos. Tenho o sonho de um dia assistir à foliage no Vermont.

It's funny how so many crafty blogs celebrate seasons. They fascinate me as well and I never get tired of admiring all the changes they bring along. In Autumn I love how leaves change their colours, especially when they become red with dashes of green and yellow. One of my dreams is to see foliage in Vermont.

Este fim-de-semana fomos passear ao Parque Natural do Douro Internacional. Eu, que ligo mais às plantas do que aos bichos, vibrei com as amoras maduras e com as amêndoas ainda nos ramos, e antecipei com alegria a época das castanhas.

We spent this weekend at Douro Internacional Natural Park, the second largest natural park in Portugal, where the river Douro passes through mountainous territory along the Portuguese/Spanish border. I'm partial to plants, not animals, so I was happy to see the blackberries ready to be picked, the almonds still on branches; I also anticipated with joy the chestnut season.

Quarto branco / White bedroom

Hoje decidi deixar-me de vergonhas e mostrar aqui o nosso quarto. Afinal, daqui a uns meses estará escarrapachado numa revista e será visto por milhões, por isso o meu pudor nesta matéria deixou de fazer sentido.

Today I'm showing you our bedroom. I've been reluctant about showing this but now I've changed my mind: since it will be published in a few months, millions of people will see it... so why should I be so prude?

Comecemos pelas coisas que me fazem comichão: detesto as janelas (não houve hipótese de escolha) e as cortinas estão por fazer (ainda só temos black-outs).

Let us start with those things that that make me itch: I hate the windows (we really had no choice) and I still have to sew some curtains (we only have blinds).

Foquemo-nos agora nas minhas partes preferidas: a cama foi pintada de branco, as cómodas ganharam puxadores de porcelana da loja de ferragens aqui ao pé, as mesas-de-cabeceira -- compradas em super-saldos -- idem. Os quadros são desenhos de plantas do campo português e foram oferecidos ao Tiago pela Estação Nacional de Melhoramento de Plantas.

Now my favourite items: we painted the bed white, the chests of drawers got a new set of (porcelain) knobs we bought at the local hardware shop, the bedside tables -- bought on a super sale -- got the same treatment. The prints are drawings of some types of plants you find in the Portuguese countryside.

Está quase... / I'm almost there...

Estou muito entusiasmada: finalmente comecei a montar a minha loja no Etsy!! A grande abertura será para a semana... Estou tão contente!

Latas vintage / Vintage cans

No outro dia realizei um sonho de infância: ir a um sótão cheio de velharias e poder trazer o que me apetecesse.

The other day I fulfilled one of my childhood dreams: to go to an attic full of of old objects and to be able to pick whatever took my fancy.

Imaginam o que é passar umas horas num local onde o tempo congelou? À semelhança de tantos outros sótãos, o dito sótão serve há anos como depósito daquilo que já não tem utilidade mas que não se quer deitar fora.

Can you imagine what it's like to spend a couple of hours in a place when time has frozen? Like so many other attics, this particular one has been used for storing unuseful objects that people didn't want to throw away.

De lá trouxe todas estas latas de laca e desodorizante de tempos que já lá vão. Qual o interesse disto, podem perguntar? Bem, para além dos desenhos e das cores, o que mais me encanta nestes achados prende-se com o facto de se tratarem de objectos de uso diário que nunca ninguém se daria ao trabalho de guardar... e que, 30 anos depois, eu fui encontrar numa caixa poeirenta. Para mim, são verdadeiros testemunhos da vida quotidiana no século XX.

That's where I found these hairspray and deodorant cans from the past. What's the point of all this, you may ask? Well, appart from vintage pictures and colours, what strikes me the most is that these are objects people use daily but would never think of keeping as mementos... objects which I happened to find inside a dusty box 30 years later. To me, these are real testimonials of 20th century daily life.
