Tenho um penchant por cenas domésticas. O catálogo da exposição do V&A está cheio de reproduções de quadros em que aparecem quilts, e este é um dos meus preferidos. Gosto de ver as duas gerações unidas pelo mesmo propósito, os retalhos espalhados pelo chão, as cores muito femininas e, claro, o quilt em si. É óbvio que há muitos mais significados escondidos mas, idealizações morais à parte, o ambiente é de comunhão e de paz. E isso é bom.

I have a penchant for domestic scenes. The catalogue from the V&A exhibition is filled with reproductions of paintings where one can spot a quilt or two, and this picture is one of my favourites. I like seeing the two generations united by the same purpose, the scraps on the floor, the feminine colours and, of course, the quilt. There's obviously much more meaning hidden behind it but, putting aside moral idealisations, there's a general feeling of communion and peace. And that's a good thing.

London Weekend - II

Outra das coisas que fiz em Londres foi visitar a livraria da Persephone em Kensington (ainda só conhecia a de Lamb's Conduit Street). Comprei três livros e li metade de High Wages no comboio de volta para Staffordshire. Para quem ainda não é fã desta editora, o catálogo pode ser requisitado aqui (recomendo-o vivamente).

One other thing I did whilst in London was visiting the Persephone bookshop in Kensington (I'd only been to the one in Lamb's Counduit Street). I bought three books and read half of High Wages on the train back to Staffordshire. London Weekend - I

Este fim-de-semana fomos a Londres. Estou a adorar viver no campo, mas não há dúvida de que uma imersão urbana de vez em quando sabe mesmo bem! O pretexto para a viagem foi a exposição sobre quilts que está no V&A, que visitei com algumas das participantes no Euro Bee. A exposição é imperdível para alguém que se interesse por tecidos, domesticidade e História das mulheres. A minha mãe vem cá passar uns dias e acho que não vou resistir a visitá-la novamente!

We went to London for the weekend. I'm loving my life in the country but an urban immersion from time to time feels great! The pretext for the trip was the quilts exhibition at the V&A, which I visited with some of the participants in the Euro Bee. The event is unmissable for someone who is interested in textiles, domesticity and women's History. My mother is coming to stay for a few days aso I think I'm going to visit the exhibition again!

English Country Life :: Simple Pleasures

Ouvir o carro encarnado do carteiro às 8h30 da manhã. Saborear a expectativa de hoje haver correio. Apanhar camélias no jardim. Folhear a Persephone Biannually e fazer uma lista dos livros a encomendar. Acabar o dia sentada na relva, com vista para os cisnes. Ah, que bom que é viver no campo.

Hearing the Royal Mail red car at 8.30 am. Enjoying the fact that today we've got mail. Picking camelias from the garden. Browsing through the Persephone Biannually and making a list of the books I want to order. Ending the day sitting on the grass looking at the swans. Oh, living in the country is pure bliss.

Grow Your Own

No início deste mês, aderi ao One Plot Pledge. A seguir, inscrevi-me no Dig In e recebi, pelo correio e de graça, quatro pacotes de sementes: courgettes (o meu legume preferido!), cenouras, tomates e feijão verde. Entretanto, a Alys Fowler transformou-se rapidamente na minha nova heroína. Este país está a despertar em mim um interesse pela jardinagem, quem diria?

Earlier this month I took the One Pot Pledge. And then I signed up for Dig In and got four free seeds packets in the post: courgettes (my favourites!), carrots, tomatoes and french beans. Meanwhile, Alys Fowler has quickly become my new hero. This country is getting me interested in gardening, who would have thought?

Tecidos de Verão : Summer Fabrics

Para fazer um saco, tenho de lavar, secar, engomar, cortar, coser, engomar novamente, fotografar, blogar... Mas a minha parte preferida é, sem dúvida, escolher os tecidos.

In order to make a bag, I must wash, dry, iron, cut, sew, press, photograph, blog... But my favourite part, without any doubt, is choosing the fabrics.

Sacos de Praia :: Beach Bags

Entre outras coisas, tenho estado a desenvolver um modelo de saco de praia, algo que queria fazer há mais de dois anos. Gosto de sacos grandes, em que caiba a toalha, o livro, o protector solar, o picnic, a camisola para o fim da tarde... Como tenho sempre medo que as chaves do carro/casa caiam na areia e se percam para sempre, resolvi acrescentar um gancho ao bolso interior. Depois de fazer o saco das flores, achei que deveria alterar ligeiramente o molde e, em seguida, fiz o saco das riscas. Estão ambos na loja e prometo que em breve haverá mais!

Amongst other things, I've been working on a beach bag pattern, something I've been meaning to do for over two years now. I like large bags with plenty of room to fit one's towel, book, sunscreen, picnic, sweater... As I'm always afraid that my car/house keys will fall into the sand and disappear forever, I've  decided to add a swivel hook next to the bag's inside pocket. After sewing the flower bag, I made a few alterations to the paper pattern and then made the striped bag. They're both available in the shop and I promise there'll be much more soon!

Loaf

No sábado estive em Birmingham, em casa do Tom Baker, a participar no curso "Bread: Back to Basics". Que dia bem passado! O curso está muito bem organizado e, em 7 horas, aprendemos imensos truques e viemos para casa com pão branco, pão integral, fougasse, ciabatta e brioche, tudo feito por nós. O Tom tem um forno a lenha no jardim, planta os seus próprios legumes e até tem galinhas. Foi óptimo passar o dia com pessoas que dão valor às coisas simples da vida. A qualquer pessoa que passe por Birmingham recomendo vivamente a Loaf!

I spent last Saturday in Birmingham, at Tom Baker's house, participating in the "Bread: Back to Basics" course. What a great day! The course is very well planned and, within 7 hours, we learned loads of tricks and came home with white bread, wholemeal bread, fougasse, ciabatta and brioche. Tom has an earth oven in the garden, plants his own veggies and even keeps chickens. I loved spending the day with people who value the simple things in life. To anyone passing through Birmingham I highly recommend Loaf!

Ervas Daninhas :: Weeding

A época de jardinagem começou! Sou uma perfeita leiga no assunto, mas estou cheia de entusiamo. Antes de mais, há que começar pelo básico: arrancar as ervas daninhas.

Gardening season has begun! I know nothing about it; nonetheless, I'm very excited. I've decided to address basic things first and started weeding.

Estou branca, estou despenteada mas estou contente. Adoro o nosso jardim.

Do Jardim :: From the Garden

Um dia gostaria de passar algum tempo a ajudar uma boa florista. Gosto muito de flores (quem não gosta?) e admiro arranjos fluídos, naturais, orgânicos. Até esse dia chegar, vou praticando em casa, com flores do nosso jardim.

One day I'd like to spend some time helping a good florist (I think they're called flower designers these days). I love flowers (who doesn't?) and I admire fluid, natural, organic arrangements. Until that day comes I'll practise at home with flowers from our garden.

Riscas Engenhosas :: Clever Stripes

Numas arrumações de lãs e afins em casa da minha avó, a minha mãe e eu encontrámos, entre dezenas de novelos, uma colcha em crochet por terminar e a revista - uma Maison et Travaux de Setembro de 1975 - com as respectivas instruções.

A colcha é composta de triângulos com riscas pararelas, e a maneira de os conjugar é bastante engenhosa: rodando-os em determinadas direcções, conseguem-se obter jogos de quadrados com um efeito bastante interessante. 

Como nem a minha mãe nem eu gostamos especialmente de crochet, pensámos que se poderia obter o mesmo resultado com um tecido às riscas. O mérito é todo da minha mãe, que cortou, coseu e acertou as riscas de forma perfeita; eu limitei-me a transfomar o quadrado final numa almofada. Aqui ficam as instruções para quem quiser experimentar fazer algo no género.

A while ago, my mother and I were tidying up my grandmother's sewing room when, amongst many skeins of yarn, we found an unfinished crochet throw, along with a magazine - a copy of Mode et Travaux from September 1975 - containing the pattern. 

The trow is made of triangles featuring parallel stripes. The way of combining the triangles is quite clever: by rotating them in certain directions, one ends up with very interesting sets of squares.

Since both my mother and I prefer sewing to crochet, we thought that we could get a similar effect by using striped fabric. My mother did all the work of cutting, sewing and perfectly aligning the stripes and I just transformed the top into a cushion. Here are the instructions in case you want to give it a try.

Livros, Livros, Livros :: Books, Books, Books

Nada como passar uma manhã na cidade para levantar o moral. Sozinha e sem programa, comecei por entrar na biblioteca. Saí carregada de livros, claro!

There's nothing like spending a morning in the city to lift one's spirits up. Alone and with no commitments, I started by visiting the public library. I left with a heavy pile of books, of course!
