De Volta ao Trabalho :: Back to Work

No sábado fomos os três à loja de tecidos. É uma loja enorme, cheia de tesouros e de horrores, um verdadeiro processo de tentativa e erro: às vezes venho carregada de tecidos giros, outras vezes não consigo comprar absolutamente nada. Desta vez trouxe de lá estes cortes (não queria acreditar quando encontrei dois tecidos da Lotta Jansdotter). Tenho passado todos os momentos livres — leia-se: sestas do Rodrigo — a cortar novos quilt kits. Se tudo correr bem, terei alguns disponíveis na loja para a semana!

On Saturday we went to the fabric shop. It's a huge place, full of treasures and horrors, truly a hit or miss process: sometimes I'll come home with kilos of great fabrics, other times I can't buy a single piece. This time I bought the ones pictured above (I couldn't believe my luck when I spotted two Lotta Jansdotter prints). I've been spending all my free time — i. e. while Rodrigo naps — putting together new quilt kits. Hopefully they'll be available in my shop by next week!

Baby Sophisticate Cardigan :: Finito!

O casaco à avô para o Rodrigo usar no próximo Outono está pronto! Fartei-me de aprender coisas novas e finalmente percebo que o tricot é uma actividade tão viciante quanto relaxante. Já tenho novo projecto nas agulhas!

The grandpa cardigan for Rodrigo to wear next Autumn is finished! I've learnt lots of new things along the way and I can now understand when people say that knitting is both relaxing and addictive. I've already casted on a new project!

Para a Anfitriã :: Hostess Gift

Esta semana passei uma tarde na companhia de duas mães e dois bebés amorosos. Para a dona da casa levei um ramo de flores do nosso jardim (narcisos, jacintos e muscari) e uma lata com bolachas de aveia (receita aqui).

This week I spent an afternoon with two lovely mums and their babies. To the hostess I took a bouquet of garden flowers (daffodils, hyacinths and muscari) and a tin of oatmeal cookies (recipe here).

Calças à Marinheiro :: Sailor Trousers

Acontece-me muitas vezes começar com uma ideia para um projecto de costura e, devido à falta de materiais ou a um engano a meio caminho, o resultado ser bastanto diferente do plano original. Nessas ocasiões tenho de puxar pela cabeça e sair da minha zona de conforto, o que significa que, muitas vezes, o resultado até acaba por ser mais giro do que a ideia inicial.

Com estas calças passou-se exactamente isso. Comecei por querer fazer umas calças de balão em piqué branco para o Rodrigo. Como base usei o molde para bloomer do livro Intemporels pour Bébés e alonguei-o mas, quando me preparava para cortar o tecido, apercebi-me de que não havia suficiente. Virei-me então para um bocado de tecido azul de decoração (que nem sabia que existia no meu armário) e cortei as calças, mas achei que iriam ficar com pouca graça... Lembrei-me então de transformá-las numas calças à marinheiro com pinças pespontadas à frente, elástico atrás e botões em madrepérola. Talvez tenham ficado demasiado largas, mas ele fica com um ar divertido!

Sometimes I'll start with an idea for a sewing project but the outcome turns out to be very different from the original plan... this usually happens because I'm short on materials or even due to some sort of mistake along the way. In those cases I must get out of my comfort zone and be more inventive, and often the end result is superior than the original idea.

That's precisely what happened with these trousers. I started by wanting to sew a pair of white piqué Aladdin trousers for Rodrigo. Using the Intemporels pour Bébés pattern for bloomers, I lengthened it and then I saw that I didn't have enough fabric for it. I raided my stash and found a piece of home décor material in a nice shade of blue and I cut the trousers, only to come to the conclusion that they were going to be a bit plain... So I decided to turn them into a pair of sailor trousers with darts in the front, elastic in the back and four mother-of-pearl buttons. They may be a bit too wide but he looks quite amusing!

Flores de Março :: March Flowers

Os narcisos chegaram em força. Estão nas rotundas, nos parques, nas beiras das estradas e no nosso jardim. Fico sempre espantada com o seu amarelo tão vibrante e chego à conclusão de que uma flor tão despudorada fica mesmo bem num país com paisagens tão serenas.

Right now the daffodils are putting on a show. They're in parks, roundabouts, roadside verges and in our garden. I'm always amazed at their vibrant yellow and I come to the conclusion that such a loud flower really suits a country with such serene landscapes.

Pão Caseiro :: Homemade Bread

A minha rotina diária mudou tão radicalmente desde que o Rodrigo nasceu que coisas tão simples como fazer pão parecem agora uma grande façanha...

A receita que uso faz dois pães e é a seguinte:

1,2 kg de farinha para pão (às vezes uso só branca, outras vezes misturo com sementes ou integral)

12 g de fermento seco para pão

25 g de sal grosso

780 ml de água tépida

1 colher de sopa de azeite (caso use farinha integral)

Juntar todos os ingredientes numa taça grande e amassar durante 10 minutos (eu uso um KitchenAid mas  há quem amasse à mão). Deixar levedar durante cerca de 2 horas. Dividir a massa em dois e formar dois pães. Deixar levedar os pães em tabuleiros durante cerca de 1 hora. Cozer em forno a 200ºC (pré-aquecido) durante 35 minutos.

Ever since Rodrigo was born, my daily routine has changed so dramatically that making bread now seems almost like some sort of achievement...

The recipe I use makes two loaves:

1,2 kg strong bread flour (sometimes I'll only use white flour, other times I'll mix it up with wholemeal)

12 g dry active yeast

25 g coarse sea salt

780 ml lukewarm water

1 tablespoon olive oil (in case you use wholemeal flour)

Weigh all the ingredients into a large bowl. Knead for 10 minutes (either by hand or with the help of a KitchenAid mixer). Let it proof for approx. 2 hours. Divide the dough in two and shape two loaves. Let them proof on trays for approx. 1 hour. Bake in a pre-heated oven at 200ºC for 35 minutes.

Muda-Fraldas :: Changing Mat

Apesar de o Rodrigo já ter feito um mês, ainda não tenho algum equipamento básico como um saco para transportar toda a parafernália do bebé quando saio de casa ou mesmo um muda-fraldas portátil. Durante a gravidez tive uma enorme relutância em comprar mil e uma coisas desnecessárias e quis esperar que ele nascesse para perceber quais são as verdadeiras necessidades de uma mãe... isto aliado à vontade de fazer eu própria tudo o que for possível... a verdade é que o tempo vai passando e eu tenho mesmo de tomar uma atitude!

Esta semana fui à primeira aula de massagem para bebés e um dos requisitos era levar um muda-fraldas e uma toalha. Tenho andado a pensar no desenho ideal de muda-fraldas, assim como nos materiais — impermeável? absorvente? As opiniões dividem-se, por isso resolvi conjugar oleado com turco. O oleado é prático e isolante (as massagens são feitas no chão), enquanto que o turco absorve qualquer acidente e, como está preso ao oleado com velcro, é muito fácil de tirar e lavar.

Ainda hei-de fazer outro muda-fraldas com bolsos e afins, mas este serve por agora!

Although Rodrigo is already one month old, I still don't own some basic equipment like a changing bag or even a travel change mat. During my pregnancy I was very reluctant to buy unnecessary baby gear and decided to wait until the baby was born to see what a new mother really needs... in addition to this,  I'm rather keen on making as much as I can myself... but the truth is some things are really useful and now I must put my act together!

This week I went to my first baby massage class and one of the requirements was a change mat and a towel. I've been thinking about the ideal change mat design and materials — should it be waterproof? or absorbent? People have different opinions on this so I decided to go for both. I used oilcloth, which is practical and insulating (the massage is performed on the floor) and also a layer of towelling, which will absorb any potential accident and since I used velcro to attach it to the oilcloth, is very easy to throw in the wash.


I still want to make a change mat with pockets but this one will do for now!

Manequim :: Dressmaker's Dummy

Andava há anos à procura de um manequim antigo — são difíceis de encontrar em relativo bom estado e a um preço razoável. Então não é que a minha querida senhoria me diz que tem dois guardados no sótão? Emprestou-me este e ando toda contente com esta nova ajudante de costura.

For years I've looked for an old dressmaker's dummy — they're hard to find in a reasonable condition and for a decent price. Who could have guessed that my lovely landlady had two stored away in her attic? She let me borrow this one and I'm really pleased with with my new sewing partner.

Bebé Astronauta :: Baby Astronaut

O Rodrigo já nos brinda com a ocasional bolçadela, mas ainda é muito pequeno para os meus babetes. Tornava-se urgente fazer um à medida dele — então baseei-me num babete que usei em bebé, que fica bastante junto ao corpo, mas alterei a maneira de fechar porque o original subia muito. O tecido é um resto de uma camisa do meu pai e já o tinha usado para fazer este macaquinho. Este é o primeiro protótipo de babete — o próximo terá alças mais compridas e fechará com velcro. Veremos quando terei tempo para o fazer! 

Rodrigo will occasionaly present us with a bit of posseting but he's still much too small for my bibs. I had to come up with one that would fit him — based on one of the bibs I wore as a baby, I made him this bib. I altered the closures so the bib would be more snug to his body; the fabric comes from one of my father's old shirts (I had already used a piece of it to make these rompers). This is only the first prototype — next time I'll play with longer straps and velcro. Let's see when I'll have the time to do so!

Açúcar Baunilhado :: Vanilla Sugar

O que fazer com as vagens de baunilha depois de usadas as sementes? É tão simples fazer açúcar baunilhado: basta pô-las dentro de um frasco com açúcar, esperar umas semanas e já está!

What to do with vanilla pods once you've used up the seeds? It's so simple to make vanilla sugar: just pop the pods inside a jar filled with sugar, wait a few weeks and that's it!
