Estou a gostar imenso de ler os comentários ao mais recente giveaway e tenho de começar a tomar notas! Vou decididamente tentar fazer uns posts sobre dar os primeiros passos na costura, mas desde já deixo um disclaimer: eu aprendi sozinha e só coso à máquina há dois anos... posso é partilhar a maneira como me fui aventurando neste mundo. No fundo, resume-se apenas a isto: com a ajuda da internet e sem medos!

I'm really enjoying reading all the comments on my most recent giveaway and I have to start jotting down some notes! I'll definitely try to write some posts about starting to sew but I have to make a disclaimer: I am self-taught and I've only been machine-sewing for two years... what I can do is share the way I've been venturing into this world. In a nutshell, it all comes to this: online help and no fears!

Entretanto comecei a fazer os meus cartões de Natal. Este ano, e visto que começo a ter o meu pequeno negócio, vou enviá-los não só a família e amigos, mas também a quem me comprou peças ao longo deste ano. Por isso, se é cliente do Saídos da Concha, já sabe! (se calhar tinha mais graça se fosse surpresa...)

Meanwhile, I have started making my Christmas cards. This year -- since I'm starting my own little business -- I'll be sending them not only to friends and family but also to everyone who has bought something from me this past year. So, if you are a Saídos da Concha customer, now you know! (maybe this would have been more interesting if it had come as a surprise...)

Este ano estou rendida a três novas aquisições: o almejado baker's twine (este cordel encarnado e branco à l'ancienne que encontrei na Dille & Kamille na Bélgica), uma guilhotina de papel (presente de Natal de há dois anos e apenas estreado ontem...) e um "arredondador de cantos" (comprado nos EUA, onde floresce a indústria dedicada ao scrapbooking).

This year I'm fascinated by my three new acquisitions: the much-desired baker's twine (found at Dille & Kamille in Belgium), a paper guillotine (which I was given two years ago but which made its debut only yesterday) and a corner rounder (bought in the US where the scrapbooking industry flourishes).

Decidi-me por um esquema bastante básico: guilhoteinei folhas A4 a meio, imprimi o endereço da minha loja, dobrei a folha a meio e desenhei uma árvore de Natal com agulha e fio. Em seguida, arredondei os cantos e escrevi os votos de boas festas.

I went for a rather basic design: I cut A4 leaves in half, printed my shop's address, folded the leaf in half and drew a Christmas tree with needle and twine. Then I rounded the corners and wrote down my wishes.

2nd blog-anniversary and a giveaway!

Este blog faz dois anos e é altura de comemorar. Ter um blog traz a reboque muitas coisas boas e uma delas é, indiscutivelmente, uma audiência. Hoje celebro o facto de não escrever para o vazio, mas sim para pessoas que comentam o que faço, que me escrevem e-mails e que sabem quem sou. Fiz este saco de Outono para vocês: para entrarem no sorteio, basta que escrevam sobre assuntos que gostariam de ver aqui tratados. Talvez dar os primeiros passos na costura? This blog is now two years old and I feel it's time to commemorate. Having a blog brings along many good things, one of them being an audience. Today I celebrate the fact that I'm not writing into the void; I write for people that commet on what I make, write me e-mails and know who I am. I have made this Autumn bag for you: to enter the giveaway, all you have to do is tell me about subjects you'd like me to write about. Maybe getting started sewing? Sunday Stash :: #2

Ao contrário de muita gente, eu adoro comprar tecidos pela internet. Aliás, eu adoro comprar pela internet. Que bom que é ter acesso aos nossos produtos preferidos ou a coisas únicas, sem pressões nem horários! Por outro lado, as lojas online -- e agora refiro-me àquelas que vendem panos -- oferecem constantemente promoções, e é precisamente a essa secção que me dirijo em primeiro lugar sempre que entro numa loja de tecidos virtual.

In spite of some people's reluctance to buy fabrics online, I actually enjoy it. I mean, I love buying online. How great is it to be able to browse through your favourite products, or even unique things, with no pressure nor schedules? On the other hand, online shops -- and now I'm refering specifically to fabric shops -- are constantly offering discount opportunities. In fact, the sale section is the first section I click whenever I enter an online fabric shop.

Today's sunday stash has been bought both online and on sale. These are three prints from the Urban Chicks collection for Moda which have come from Volksfaden.

It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas...

... e eu começo a ficar entusiasmada com as possibilidades. Fazer enfeites e pensar em presentes para oferecer são as minhas actividades preferidas nesta época. Ah, e embrulhar os presentes!

... and I'm started to get excited with all the possibilities. Making ornaments and thinking about presents to give away are my favourite activities this time of year. Oh, and wrapping presents!

A minha coroa foi totalmente inspirada nesta e acabei de a fazer ontem à noite; aproveitei ainda para experimentar, também em cores natalícias, os pássaros deste livro.

My wreath, which I finished last night, has been totally inspired by this one; I also attempted to make this book's birds in Christmas-y colours.

Agora só me falta decidir a questão da árvore... Queria encontrar uma alternativa tanto a uma árvore natural como a uma artificial... Vou tentar explicar o meu dilema: não quero uma árvore natural que, à semelhança do ano passado, traga bichos e deite, diariamente, folhas e resina para o chão; mas também não me apetece comprar uma árvore de plástico. O que sugerem?

Now I have to make a decision about the tree... I'd like to find an alternative both to a natural tree and to an artificial one... I'll try to explain my dillema: I don't want a real tree that, just like what happened last year, brings along bugs and stains our floor with dead leaves and resin; but I have no desire whatsoever to buy a plastic tree. What do you suggest I do?

Cloth House, London

O comentário da Luísa ao meu post de ontem lembrou-me que também eu andei pelo Soho em busca de lojas de tecidos e que, entre lojas com materiais para produções teatrais -- cheias de brilhos e lantejoulas --, encontrei a Cloth House. Ou melhor, as Cloth Houses, porque há duas em Berwick Street, uma no nº 47 e outra no nº 98.

Luísa's comment on yesterday's post reminded me that I also wandered around Soho in search of fabric shops and that, amongst many shops selling materials suitable for theatrical purposes -- full of shiny, glittery things --, I found Cloth House. Actually, I stumbled upon two Clth Houses in Berwick Street, one in street number 47 and the other one in street number 98.

Fabrics Galore, London

Tal como prometi ontem, aqui ficam algumas imagens da loja Fabrics Galore. Fica bastante longe do centro de Londres mas vale absolutamente a pena ir lá de propósito, porque a variedade é assombrosa e os preços... bem, os preços são imbatíveis.

Just like I promised yesterday, here are some pictures of Fabrics Galore. It's quite far away from the centre of London but it's well worth the detour: the variety of fabrics is huge and the prices... well, the prices are unbeatable.

Sunday Stash #1

Eis que surgiu (mais) uma boa desculpa para escrever sobre tecidos: a iniciativa Sunday Stash da Tamara propõe que todos os domingos falemos sobre o nosso stash, que é como quem diz, o nosso armário dedicado aos tecidos. Quando estive em Londres fui à Fabrics Galore, uma loja em Lavender Hill especializada em vender tecidos em fim de série. Hoje vou centrar-me do que lá comprei e amanhã mostro fotografias da minha incursão à loja.

Now there is (another) good excuse for talking about fabrics: Tamara's Sunday Stash invites us to share a bit of our stash every Sunday. When I was in London I went to Fabrics Galore, a shop in Lavender Hill that specialises in selling end of line fabrics. Today I'll stick to what I bought over there and tomorrow I'll show you some pictures of my excursion.

Primeiro que tudo: tecidos Boden! A Boden é uma companhia de venda de roupa por catálogo de que já falei uma vez. Há uns tempos andei à caça dos tecidos deles no Ebay mas sem grande sucesso, por isso fiquei contente quando os vi live.

First of all: Boden fabrics! Boden is a mail-order clothing company that I talked about once. I had been unsuccessfully hunting for their fabrics on Ebay so I was pleased to see them live.

Este é um tecido Michael Miller: é giro para fazer babetes.

O tecido cor-de-rosa é Liberty e o lilás é bom para carteiras de mão.

I heart bags

Que saudades que tenho de fazer malas atrás de malas... Escolher tecidos, pensar em modelos, imaginar que pessoa usaria determinada mala... Nos próximos tempos espero poder dedicar-me a isso. A fazer malas atrás de malas. Ah! esta está na loja.

I really miss making bags and more bags... Picking up fabrics, choosing patterns, imagining what kind of person would wear a particular bag... In the next few weeks I'm planning on working on it. Making bags and more bags. Oh! this one is at the shop.

Log cabin

Os quilts continuam a chamar por mim e apeteceu-me pôr em prática o que aprendi na aula passada: construir um bloco log cabin. Como a motivação para grandes projectos ainda não chegou, numa tarde fiz uma almofada para a sala com as minhas cores preferidas.

I'm still feeling the quilt appeal and I had the urge to practise what I learnt in class: building a log cabin block. I'm not in the mood for big projects so I made this pillow in my favourite colours in an afternoon.

Tradicionalmente, o bloco log cabin tem uma construção bipartida claro/escuro. No entanto, resolvi bend the rules e optei por um ar mais desarrumado para a almofada. Estou contente com o resultado -- o que acham? São pelo tradicional ou pelo inesperado?

Traditional log cabin blocks are pieced in a way that enhances dark vs. light fabrics. Nevertheless, I decided to bend the rules and go for a random look. I'm quite happy with it -- what do you think? Do you prefer traditional or unexpected?

Mankind Mag

Já saiu o nº 5 da Mankind Mag, uma revista independente da responsabilidade da Erin, autora do blog Design for Mankind. Esta edição é sobre o movimento handmade e conta, entre muitas outras coisas, com uma entrevista a Faythe Levine, crafter e cineasta, que assina o documentário e o livro Handmade Nation. O documentário só será lançado em 2009 mas o livro já saiu e eu encomendei hoje um exemplar! O trailer do filme pode ser visto aqui.

The 5th issue of Mankind Mag is out! Mankind Mag is a self-published indie magazine authored by Erin, who writes the blog Design for Mankind. This is the Handmade Issue and it features, among many other things, an interview with Faythe Levine. Faythe is a crafter and filmmaker who is responsible for Handmade Nation, both a documentary and a book. The documentary will be realeased in 2009 but the book is already published; I ordered a copy today! You can watch the trailer here.

Virago Modern Classics

Para mim, uma das grandes atracções de Londres é a variedade de excelentes livrarias. Gostei de, todos os dias, entrar pelo menos numa e perder-me nas estantes da ficção contemporânea, dos clássicos em língua inglesa e dos livros de crafts. Adorei conhecer as Waterstone's, especialmente as de Covent Garden (dedicada a artes e design) e de Picadilly Circus (enorme, com cinco pisos e dois cafés). E visitei a minha querida Persephone, mas isso fica para uma próxima vez...

As far as I'm concerned, one of London's greatest attractions is the variety of excellent bookshops. During my stay I enjoyed entering at least one of them everyday and getting lost among my favourite sections: contemporary fiction, classic British litterature and craft books. I loved Waterstone's, especially the ones in Covent Garden (focused on art and design) and in Picadilly Circus (huge, with five floors and two cafés). I also visited my beloved Persephone but I'll talk about that next time...

O meu amor pelos livros passa também por capas apetecíveis. Já aqui falei das capas da Persephone e da Cotovia, fantásticas na sua sobriedade, e agora estou fascinada pelas edições comemorativas dos 30 anos da Virago, outra editora britânica que publica livros orientados para o público feminino. No caminho para Lisboa devorei Excellent Women de Barbara Pym, cuja capa foi desenhada pela Orla Kiely (a minha mais recente obsessão). E hoje comecei a ler The Diary of a Provincial Lady, cuja capa pertence à Cath Kidston e que promete ser mais um livro delicioso!

My love of books also contemplates nice covers. I've already written about Persephone's and Cotovia's elegant and sober covers and I'm currently fascinated by Virago's commemorative editions (Virago is another British publisher of women-oriented books). On my way home I devoured Excellent Women by Barbara Pym, whose cover was designed by Orla Kiely (my latest obsession) and today I started reading The Diary of a Provincial Lady, whose cover is by Cath Kidston.

Inesperado / Unexpected

Apesar de, aparentemente, a internet se tratar de um mundo impalpável e virtual, por vezes revela-se espantosamente próxima e real. Há uns dias, recebi este coração feito pela Elisabeth. A Elisabeth faz e oferece corações de feltro a quem a inspira. Muito obrigada, Elisabeth!
